It’s that simple connection to a home that draws you in. A kitchen could be just a room where you prepare meals or a back yard just the outdoor area behind your home. What make each of these projects unique are the homeowners’ ultimate inspiration, personal perspective and motivation. We are fortunate to be able to share these very distinctive insights and the households that portray them with our readers.
After renovating the interior of their 1950s ranch, Bob Auray and his wife, Marion, focused their attention on the open space behind their home. Today, they have created a welcoming alfresco escape, the perfect oasis to enjoy a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning or entertain family and friends into the evening.
It’s no surprise that families are spending more quality time at home. As this trend continues, we’re seeing more people venturing out their back doors and creating unique ways to blur the lines between indoors and out. In addition to the Aurays, you’ll meet Jay and Christine Henderson, who have fashioned a chic, open air retreat behind their French Manor home. We couldn’t resist tempting you with the gorgeous pergola on our cover. Who wouldn’t want to stargaze with cocktail in hand at this bar? Next up is Mike and Tammy Hodak’s alluring pool retreat, you’ll want to jump right in and enjoy the view. We are also highlighting several exciting proj-ects from the 2010 Housing Excellence Awards.
Finally, we extend a warm welcome back and a “Cheers!” to the ninth annual Pittsburgh Wine Festival. In that spirit we’re offering you an exclu-sive peek at two spectacular wine cel-lars, and the families whose passion for wine demands the very best.
We hope you enjoy this issue and share it with a friend or two along with a glass of wine in your own backyard paradise!
Cheers,
Bill Slattery and the Housetrends staff
We just feel connected to it all the time.

built an exquisite French Manor home in which to live their
family life; then they built an extension of their home to
live more of it—outside. Their new patio offers outdoor
rooms that blend with the architectural style of the home
and function like indoor rooms while giving the family many
opportunities to commune both with nature and friends.
The centerpieceWhat helps to transform the patio into a full-scale living area without walls is the covered pergola that connects with the home and extends over the kitchen and bar. Custom-crafted from red cedar beams supported by Corinthian-style fiberglass columns and roofed with clear polycarbonate sheeting, it conveys the luxurious character of the house.
Just like inside the house, the spot for a gathering crowd is the kitchen. Guests can sit and enjoy cocktails at the granite top bar that partially surrounds the outdoor kitchen while keeping Jay company as he cooks. And cook he does, he likes to use the rotisserie feature of his grill to roast chicken or a round of beef to serve the crowd.
The exquisitely designed kitchen with amenities like a prep sink, icemaker and ventilating hood over the grill, makes cook-ing outside pleasurable. Handcrafted from marine plywood that resist rotting, the outdoor kitchen cabinets were finished with Danish oil rub for weather protection. Details like lighting inside of the cabinets and doors that slide back into the sides of the liquor cabinet not only make it easy to work in the space at night, but add to the elegant ambiance.
Beautiful and functional, the custom-made pergola provides cover from the weather and allows for entertaining and grilling year round. During the winter of 2010, the Hendersons hosted their children’s friends and their parents for a blizzard barbeque. After they all went sledding, Jay grilled hamburgers and served hot cider while the group warmed by the outdoor fire pit.
Jay teased that if the covered pergola could withstand that thir-ty inch plus snow load, it confirmed that he hired the right com-pany to build it. Jawn Funyak, of Funyak Lawn and Landscape designed the entire outdoor space—built and installed most of it with his own crews—from the stone work to the lighted custom liquor cabinet. Funyak modestly said that the Hendersons had a good idea of what they wanted; he just actively listened to provide it to them.

Extra amenitiesThe central location of the kitchen affords a good view of all the other recreation-al activities going on around the two-tiered, cut bluestone patio. The patio, at 1,500 square feet, is perfect for a crowd by allowing for separate gathering areas without feeling like you’re bumping into each other.
The focal point of the handsome “liv-ing room” area is a grand and statuesque, custom cast fireplace, which was hand-crafted by Stephen Palsa of Ornamental Concrete Concepts. Palsa also cast the bal-ustrades that make up the railing around the patio from ones that were original to the Hendersons’ home. It’s only one of the many details that were paid attention to in Funyak’s design that make the patio
blend so beautifully with the character of the home.
The Hendersons truly enjoy this out-door extension of their home—it adds so much more living to their lifestyle. Sunsets by the fire are particularly invit-ing at the end of the day. Even when it’s just the family they dine outside almost daily, especially in summer. But they do love to entertain; welcoming family and friends—often with dogs included—to enjoy their home life outside along with nature that surrounds them.

If you take a traditional ranch home,
bring in new homeowners, toss in
some artistic vision, add a little Frank
Lloyd Wright design, blend some Asian
aesthetics in the mix, then surround it
with warmth and beauty, you’ve got the
house that Marion and Bob Auray ren-
ovated. Relocating from Connecticut
over 4 years ago, the couple saw great
potential for the 50+-year-old home.
“The house and I were born in the
same year,” says Marion. “We both
have good bones, but could use a little
tweaking,” she laughs.

A concept is bornMarion worked closely with contractor Dave Voelker, of Dave Voelker Design and Construction. With her ability to draw up plans, and put her vision on paper, it made the job easy for the contractor. “It’s neat to work with her because it’s kind of like being in an art class,” explains Dave. “She conceptualizes, she draws it on paper, and then I build it.”
The newly renovated kitchen was designed with a look that’s contrary to popular style. She was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Craftsman design, and combined it with Asian aesthet-ics. Marion didn’t want a professional kitchen look, so appliances were concealed beneath two-tone, natural cherry wood cabinetry. “All appliances were hidden, because I don’t like a kitchen that
looks like a kitchen,” says Marion. Her design integrated a linear and curve combination that
extends to counters, stools, and windows. A separate cooking area makes it comfortable for guests to linger around the ample island, and 20-inch porcelain tiles seem to radiate a luminous glow from below.
The Asian influence carries through to the dining room. The own-er’s mother was an Asian art importer, and pieces from her collection are showcased on the walls of this notable room. A cherry dining table, accented with leather and linen chairs, commands the room.
Marion is a bit of a chemist when it comes to paint colors. “My husband has seen me mixing paints at two in the morning,” she

housetrends greater pittsburgh 35
tells. “I went through 10 different shades before getting the warm red that I wanted for this room.” As with the other rooms, each space is designed with a color.
Artistic touches“The uniqueness of this being a 1956 ranch is the open flow that it now has,” points out the homeowner. “There are no dead ends, and there is a center core with all rooms circling around it.”
An 8-paneled painting in the living room was commissioned by an artist friend, who worked as a shoe designer in Marion’s com-pany. Painted with a birch tree theme, all panels are painted top to bottom, and on both sides. “It’s a unique piece that we originally

had made to hang over a large stairwell in our Connecticut home,” she points out.
Modern art has been mixed in with traditional art, and arti-facts collected during the couple’s travels inspire good conversa-tion. Marion chose earth tones because she finds them most comforting throughout the seasons of the year.

“From the moment we purchased this house, I saw the poten-tial of the master bedroom suite which looked nothing like this,” explains Marion. “The bathroom was a sitting room, and the closet was the bathroom but much smaller.”
She wanted a bathroom that was open, spacious, and with the sunshine pouring in. In keeping with a traditional home, she didn’t want to go with a high ceiling. Cherry cabinets, rainforest marble, and stained glass are the key elements in the room. The whole bathroom was planned around the stained glass window. Originally designed by Tiffany, the window is a remake of the “tree of life.”
In step with the rest of the home, the master bedroom is warm and intimate. Much attention was paid to the custom cabinet work around the TV and, once again, Marion was able to convey pre-cisely what she wanted. “She pushes through her artistic side, and then gets it through to the contractor’s side,” says Voelker. “She’s involved, she understands, and we all know what to expect at the end of the day.”
The stained glass in these floating shelves is backlit, and coor-dinates with the glass in the patio doors. Marion and Bob wanted the bedroom to be connected to the outside. In warm weather, they open the door to their lush patio, and often relax by the nearby fire pit. Pieces are an eclectic mix of finds from Pier One and JC Penney, to one-of-a-kind treasures from the Orient. “You have to invest in certain pieces that are important to you,” explains Marion. “Then you find filler pieces that make a place beautiful.”

Connecting with natureThe back patio area didn’t exist when the couple first moved into the home. The first level was completed during kitchen construction, and the couple expanded it this year with a fire pit, and overhang porch to their master bedroom. “I added little curves, and asymmetrical lines,” points out Marion. “Then I gave it flow by carrying the tile colors from the kitchen, to the outside back patio.”
“We wanted a flowing expanse, and although it’s not a Frank Lloyd Wright house, it has a Frank Lloyd Wright feeling to it,” says Bob. “In that, you take a smaller and more intimate space, and release it to a flowing space.”
The couple didn’t want to go the big home route. “We’re only two people, and didn’t want something that we could get lost in, but rather have a home to entertain and have an occasional house guest,” tells Bob. “We just feel connected to it all the time.”
The symmetry of this stunner home is clearly a combination of Marion’s natural raw talent, her ability to translate vision to paper, and her working chemistry with her contractor. “The energy that comes from within her is fantastic,” says Voelker. “Although she was always present, I never felt like she was hovering because she is an absolute blast.”

When we purchased our home, the kitchen was in the middle of a custom renovation. We needed an expert to match missing cabinet doors, end pieces and crown moldings. Dave Voelker Design & Construction was able to finish the complex project by making each cabinet door by hand and matching all the paints and stains. His staff showed up on time and talked us through each step of the process. DVDC came to our rescue and together we now have the kitchen of our dreams. Thanks DVDC! -Shea and Jim, Sewickley, PA

Fired up!
As the temperature outside rises, we all tend to get that urge to migrate outdoors. With a cool drink in hand, one of the first things we do is fire up the grill. Summer goes hand-in-hand with outdoor barbecues, and there’s nothing quite like cooking a juicy steak or pork tenderloin.

Housetrends takes a peek at two winning projects from the Housing Excellence Awards
By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Craig Thompson
Each year, the Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh unveils the winners of its annual Housing Excellence
Awards. Started in 1996, these prestigious awards recognize and honor the spectacular craftsmanship created by builders
and remodelers in the Greater Pittsburgh area. This latest crop of winning projects left nothing to the imagination. Here
is a look at two projects that left a lasting impression with us.

As much As ten miles—that’s how much molding is flowing through this captivating home in Lake
MacLeod. As you wander through the roughly 6,000-square-foot home and gaze up at the ceilings, you immediately
believe you’re looking upon more than three miles of bed molding. You also understand why it took nearly three years
to come to fruition. The homeowners purchased the piece of property situated along the lake in 2006. “We were look-
ing for a lot and spent a lot of time driving around,” the homeowner recalls. “As soon as we drove over the bridge and
into the community we fell in love.”

They hired architect Anthony Stillson to draw up the plans for their new home. “We wanted the house to exhibit a Southern Colonial style,” the homeowner says. “We wanted it to look like it had been sitting here along this lake for 100 years.”
They turned to Jeff Martin, owner of Primrose Homes, to bring their vision to life. “This is a great community because every home is different. I’ve built every-thing from Victorian and French Provincial to Federal and Prairie style homes in Lake
MacLeod. I love the eclectic feeling here,” Martin says.
So, when it came to this home, Martin was prepared and excited to create some-thing altogether different. In addition to the fresh and cheerful interior, the homeowners’ primary goal was to take advantage of the enticing views. Nearly every room in the house offers a peek at the lake.
Inside, the attention to detail is astound-ing. The home incorporates special details

in nearly every room to complement the abundance of molding and trim work, as well as the exterior views. The formal living room features a wonderful curved staircase, 20-foot ceilings and the huge 48-inch masonry fireplace surround that soars to the ceiling.
The homeowners say the living room and kitchen areas are their two favorite places to relax, so they wanted to make sure they took advantage of the welcom-ing atmosphere. When designing the

kitchen, they created the peninsula bar to look out at the view. “When we sit at the bar, instead of looking into the kitchen, we’re looking out at the lake,” says the homeowner.
The kitchen boasts a southern flair, accentuated with an oversized farmhouse sink and old-fashioned pendant lights hanging over the large center island. The white perimeter cabinets and backsplash comprised of white subway tiles finish off the classic look. While separate from the

kitchen, the formal dining room continues the same clean and timeless look, with soft colors and built-in shelving for col-lectibles and china.
The home also includes three bedrooms, including the elegant master suite. The homeowners purposely created a com-fortable retreat. “In so many new homes you see huge master bedrooms, almost cavern-like in size. Ours is only 14x20 feet,” says the homeowner. “We didn’t want a large room because we were afraid it would look bare.”
The dark wood furniture, including the four-poster bed, juxtaposed to the light neutral walls and carpeted floors, create a cozy and intimate space. A balcony allows the couple to open the doors and take in the lake view. The adjoining master bath incorporates all the modern luxuries, including a bathtub tucked into a dormer,
an oversized shower and separate his-and-her vanities.
Along with the refreshing decor, it’s what you don’t see that completes this home. Both Martin and the homeowners paid special attention to the home’s ener-gy efficiency. Its five-star energy rating is thanks to a variety of practices. Martin used Icynene insulation in all the walls and expanded the thermal envelope up to the roof line, even the attic is insulated. “This process guarantees no more than a five degree difference in the attic com-pared to the rest of the home,” he says.
The inclusion of hydronic radiant heat flooring throughout much of the house also contributes to better energy effi-ciency. “We wouldn’t have done a single thing different in this house,” says the homeowner. “Our goal was to love this house for a lifetime, and we will.”
*Primrose Homes was awarded the Best Single Family Home over $1,000,000 for this home.

Just like the previous homeowners, the owners of this unique carriage
home aimed to create a living space that is timeless and classic. However, unlike the first home, which was recently built
to withstand the test of time, this carriage house was renovated back to its formal glory, with a few modern touches
to bring it into this century. F The homeowners purchased the old Sewickley estate in 2008. With four buildings on
the property, the couple first set out to renovate the main house. “The main house is actually smaller than the carriage
house,” says April Spagnolo, CKD, of Kitchen & Bath Concepts, who helped with the renovation. “It was originally used
for the working class living quarters, more than likely the maids.”

After renovation of the main house was complete, the homeowners turned their attention to the carriage house. At 3,000 square feet, the couple wanted to use the three-story building as a garage, while also creating a quiet retreat for themselves and their daughter.
The couple hired Aspen Valley Con-tracting for the renovation. Spagnolo, and a plethora of other Pittsburgh-area com-panies, helped turn the dilapidated car-riage house into the impressive creation it is today. “The homeowner is into restor-ing things to their natural beauty and, just like the main house, he was adamant about putting it back to its original glory,” Spagnolo says.
Starting from the ground up, the car-riage house includes a relaxing library, complete with a faux-finished vaulted ceil-ing, custom bookcases and an exposed brick wall original to the building. “The classy design complements the English country feel of their main home and is a favorite spot for the homeowners,” Spagnolo says.
The library transitions to a hallway leading to the elevator. While the exposed stone wall was kept intact during the ren-ovation, it is now illuminated. Overhead, a coffered ceiling, which is completely removable, hides the building’s humidi-fier. The immediate area around the eleva-tor was left completely open to provide views of every level. “Originally you could only get to the third floor via the stair-case running along the side of the build-ing. The homeowner added the eleva-tor so that he could walk right into the library and have access to every floor,” says Spagnolo, who also mentions a small gardening area, tucked behind the door between the library and elevator.
The elevator first leads to the garage level, where crews replaced the old floor with concrete topped with a custom epoxy finish. Dark green storage cabinets line

the area was unused attic space, with old concrete floors and exposed rafters. “The end result is quite remarkable,” she adds.
The space includes a small kitchenette, comfortable living room, bedroom and bath-room. The spiral staircase leads to a secluded loft area. Since the homeowners spend a lot of time here, they each have their own desk area along the living room wall. Built-in storage units on each side of the television hold extra kitchen items and the wife’s knit-ting and craft items.
“This isn’t something you see every day,” Spagnolo says. “The homeowners have this special little retreat, just steps from their home. I understand why they love spending time in here.”

Something magical happens when you cook food outside. Nothing illustrates that point more than the “Hobo Dinner”
many of us prepared as children during summer camps or scout outings. ● We chopped our
potatoes, place them in the middle of a square of aluminum foil. We threw in some ground beef, a
bit of ketchup, a sliced carrot if someone other than kids were in charge, and perhaps added a bit of
onion, salt and pepper. After sealing all the ingredients tightly in the foil, we threw the whole contrap-
tion on an open fire. ● After waiting patiently for several minutes, we pulled the charred foil out of
the fire and burnt our fingers opening the package to discover the amazing transformation of a few
simple ingredients into an incredible feast. It’s easy to get hungry just thinking about it.

Should you be considering an outdoor kitchen of your own, Russ Faulk, vice president of product develop-ment for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, suggests two areas to consider before you begin.
Make sure you have enough counter space. This is an area which often gets shortchanged in the plans. You need plenty of room around the grill for dishes and serving plates. Faulk recommends you allocate counter space to each of the four functional zones of the kitchen—hot, cold, wet and dry prep.
Lighting can be a challenge for year-round grillers
when it often gets dark before they’re ready to cook dinner. Have plenty of lights so that you can see what you are doing well after sunset.
And if the appeal of sitting around a warm meal in the cool air with a few friends isn’t enough to inspire you, Faulk suggests that outdoor kitchens are a sound investment—on par with an indoor kitchen remodel when it comes to resale value.
Ready to get started? Here are Housetrends’ staff picks for our favorite spots to roast, grill, or sample the fare out in fresh air.

the Poolmaker’s Children DO Have a POOlBy Phyllis Gricus
Photos by Craig Thompson
Most tradesmen have little time to create for themselves
what they build for their customers. You’ve heard the tale
of the shoemaker with the shoeless children right? Well, it
took three years of hard work, but Mike Hodak, of Pools
and Waterfalls by Mike Hodak, built his family a superb
swimming hole.continued >

A dream materializedMike’s wife Tammy learned that she enjoys the pool and its ame-nities from the perspective of a satisfied customer and as some-one who is amazed by her husband’s vision. When the pool was built, it sat near what was then the edge of a slope. She expressed her concern that the pool was so big there wouldn’t be room for a patio. “Sure they’ll be,” said Mike. “I’ll just put a rock wall here, a patio there, and pine trees behind it all to make it nice for us
and the neighbors. You’ll see,” he said. “There’s no way!” declared Tammy.
Mike saw the way, and Tammy is fast to admit, that after twenty-five years she still wishes she could envision some of the design ideas he comes up with. Unique ideas like the shallow pool rock ledge that Mike named the aqua patio. The last ledge in a waterfall series of drop pools, holds a few inches of water before

the water descends about four feet into the swimming pool. It’s large enough to place a few chaise lounges in the shallow water and lounge the day away, an ideal spot to stay cool, but dry, while the pleasing sound of flowing water surrounds you.
Depending on your preference, the waterway can be anything from a pleasant trickle to a rushing stream. And if you’re feeling as energetic as a kid you can have fun climbing, playing and jump-
ing from the rocks. The waterfall is a year-round feature. In the winter, the Hodaks keep the water flowing and enjoy viewing the icy shapes that form.
The aqua patio also forms the ceiling of a swimming pool grotto. Tucked behind the waterfall is a seating area with spa jets for both your back and feet. This underground oasis has a whim-sically painted ceiling that adds to the enchantment.

Live, laugh, love The backyard retreat has been the hub of great fun with family and friends over the years. It holds great appeal to kids of all ages and it’s still a draw to the Hodaks’ children even though they are now young adults. Tammy thinks their outdoor space is great for entertaining intimate gatherings as well as large groups. They never know who’s going to show up, but they love sharing their home.
And Tammy never knows what wild idea Mike will come up with next. One year, after allowing the chlorine to dissipate, Mike stocked the pool with trout (yes, live fish) for a fundraising con-test. Families with kids came from all over the neighborhood for a chance to snag the golden trout and win a special prize. Fillet stations were set up for those interested in having the complete real fishing experience; others chose to catch and release. The proceeds went to the Watchful Shepherd organization.
As for the gardenIn his business, Mike works with Bruce Evanovich Landscape to create the ideal plant designs for his clients, and his home was no exception. Every job has a different plant palette, but the result is a naturalized setting that integrates the entire outdoor space.
When you enter the back yard in addition to being surprised by all that is back there you would be hard pressed to find evi-dence of nearby neighbors. The sloped lot has pine trees planted two and three deep along the border of the property to give the typical suburban lot a feeling of depth. It also provides privacy and a windbreak. Planted around the pool are hornbeam, curly willow, birch, sweet bay magnolia, honey locust and fernleaf buckthorn. A mix of perennials and annuals add summer color of the garden.
Mastering the good lifeOverall, the Hodaks feel they get more enjoyment out of the pool and outdoor space than work they have to put into it. Having a pool with a garden and other amenities is a great lifestyle choice. Water is calming and allows you to escape the rigors and pres-sures of daily life. It can be a solitary pleasure or one experienced with family and close friends. Just being around water is a good thing—a natural invitation for enjoyment.

A Tale of Two CellarsPair of homeowners share a toast
By Tresa A. Lovio | Photos by Craig Thompson

with impressive innovation and design yet each distinctively different.

À votre santé SalutAs the Latin saying goes: “There are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend; one’s present or future thirst; the excellence of the wine; or any other reason.” Frequent travelers, homeown-ers Tom and Donna, find great joy in the vintages of friends. As a young man back-packing through California’s wine county, Tom came upon J. Rochioli Vineyards in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. “I walked in after hours and was told they were closed for the day. I asked the owner if there were any decent spots for fly fishing, we got to talking and hours later ended up in the winery, tasting wines right out of the barrels,” explains Tom. Fast forward to 2011, and you will find J. Rochioli wines prominently displayed throughout their wine room. Tom casually motions toward several other wines, all of them now long-time friends. In this wine cellar, wine truly beholds the heart of others.
Another gem this couple has been lucky enough to discover is the Paso Robles region, often referred to as “the wild west” of the California wine country. Paso Robles’ Saxum Winery produced the James Berry Vineyard 2007, rated #1 Wine of the Year in Wine Spectator’s top 100 of 2010. Tom and Donna have been enjoying this vin-tage long before the accolades or awards it now holds. “We’ve got a 2008, just in case,” jokes Tom. Uncovering stellar wines is in Tom’s blood. “My father,” he explains, “had very limited taste in wine, but excel-lent taste nonetheless. He drank only First Growths and Grand Crus.”

If wine is the drink of gods, then Cheryl is an angel. Sewickley homeowners Cheryl and Steve, each successful business execu-tives in their own right, thrive on the challenge of purchasing fine wines before their time. Case in point, quite literally—was uncovering a notable bottle of wine in Argentina, selling for $32. “Nearly six months later this same wine was featured in Wine Spectator, at a mere $300 a bottle,” smiles Cheryl.
Creating this wine cellar was both a necessity and a labor of love for Cheryl. After moving into their new home, which didn’t have a cellar, Cheryl was faced with the challenge of creating—first in her mind, and then on paper—the perfect home for the family’s 2,000+ bottle wine collection. “I clipped photos in magazines, searched resources on the Internet,” she explains as she shows off a file full of pho-tos, blueprints and papers.
“I was the general contractor,” she laughs.
A perfectionist and self-proclaimed “visual” type of person, Cheryl’s project took only four months from start to fin-ish. A cascading waterfall is the focal point as you enter this masterfully designed cel-lar through one-of-a-kind redwood doors with iron inlay. Meticulously planned, Cheryl’s attention to detail and personal signatures are present in every aspect of the cellar. Great wine usually grows on poor soil like limestone, so including limestone from Burgundy on a wine cel-lar floor seems only fitting, and reflects authentic old-world charm. The space is cavernous, but somehow remains cozy and warm. “It’s very comfortable. It wel-comes you, it makes you want to open the door and go in,” she says.

Cheryl’s husband, Steve, has painstak-ingly charted the cellar by wine type, region, and year. The couple’s interests are primarily in reds, mostly Burgundy and Super Tuscans, but the rare special whites can be found sparingly sprinkled throughout. “Wine is my husband’s pas-sion,” explains Cheryl. “It’s the only thing he spends money on.”
Her quest for the perfect home for their formerly homeless wine collection, and a masterpiece for her husband now stands complete.
Editor’s Note: You’ll find wines from all over the world at the ninth annual Pittsburgh Wine Festival at Heinz Field on Thursday, May 5.
