PSU Athletics Hall of FamePierce: Proud to be Part of PSU Program

I truly am overwhelmed. I thought this would be easier after I’d had some time to think about it, but it’s not. But it is very special. First of all, I would like to extend my congratulations to the other inductees… I’m excited just to be in their company. I once read that it would be far better to live your life, deserve an award and never receive it than to receive an award and not deserve it. I simply pray that I will be a worthy recipient. And I will do my best to be worthy of this honor. I’d like to thank Pittsburg State University and the nominating committee for this award. I don’t know that I was ever a great athlete, but I do know that I love the game of basketball. And I loved playing it at Pittsburg State. Those things I know. I remember my first season here. Pittsburg State University had just changed it’s name. All of our practice jerseys, our uniforms, our bags, everything inside had KSCP (Kansas State College of Pittsburg) stamped on them. I remember we went to a restaurant to eat. We all walked in, and there was an older couple sitting there waiting to eat. And I noticed the woman turned to her husband and she said “What does KSCP stand for?” And he said “Honey, guard your purse; they’re from the Kansas State Correctional Facility!” One of our team goals was to win the very first game ever of women’s basketball for “Pittsburg State University.” I remember when we beat Washburn by 20 points (after an 0-9 start to the season) and how hard we worked. And we waited longer than anyone else. Our women’s

basketball program has come a long way since that first victory. Coach High and these young women have brought a new standard of academic and athletic excellence. It’s a program that today is a very positive part of the community and as alumni, we can be proud of it. I still get excited with each victory, whether I hear it on the radio, whether I read it in the paper, or whether all my crew is in the stands. I get excited with each victory, and I still feel part of any loss. I am proud to be one of them. To be inducted into the Pittsburg State Athletic Hall of Fame is a great honor for me. To put on my old red and gold polyester uniform and to walk out into John Lance Arena and play the (Alumni) game, that too was an honor. The joy that I feel is more than what’s going to hang on the wall. It’s what I have in my heart. And I thank my parents. My Mom and Dad sacrificed and encouraged so much and continue to do so. My folks didn’t know anything about the game of basketball, but they’ve been great coaches. I would like to publicly thank my husband, John, and my children. We share many loves. One of those loves is for Pittsburg State Athletics, so this is an exciting day for us. Each of you: my family, my friends, my teammates, my coaches, thank you. And to put this in perspective for myself, I would like to share a verse from my favorite book. It says: “Lay not up for your self-treasures on earth that will just become dust and fade with age. Lay up for your self-treasures in heaven that the Lord will give to you on that day.” I don’t have many earthly treasures. But, of the ones I have, this will always be most special. Thank you very much!

Jenni Miller: One of the Best to Ever Play the GameSome stars burn bright, but briefly, before fading away. Others never fully materialize. Then, there’s stars like Jenni Miller who make such an indelible impact that they leave a constant shining reminder of their brush with greatness. Jenni Miller capped a stellar four-year career at Pittsburg State University during the 1996-97 campaign. The Kearney, Mo., native etched herself among the greats to ever play the women’s game. A pure shooter, Miller finished her career with 364 3-point field goals - the second-highest total in the history of the NCAA women’s game. She missed tying the all-time women’s mark (365), set by Amy Coon of Clarion (Pa.) University, by one 3-pointer. In 111 career games, Miller averaged 3.28 3-point field goals per outing, which is the best average of any four-year player in the history of the NCAA women’s game.Miller’s abilities did not go unnoticed, as she was selected as one of eight competitors in the 1997 NCAA Women’s National 3-Point Shootout held at Indianapolis, Ind. Miller quickly become the fan favorite at Market Square Arena and she advanced to the semifinals of the event, which was televised live on ESPN. Her fluid shooting drew rave reviews from Dick Vitale. “That Jenni Miller, she’s a P-T-P’er, a Prime-Time-Performer, baby. She can flat-out shoot the basketball.”Vitale’s observation is one people in Pittsburg, Kansas, will be repeating for years to come. Jenni Miller could flat-out shoot the basketball.

PSU Athletics Hall of FamePSU’s Pracht Exemplified True Meaning of Term “Student-Athlete”

The following is Jenny Pracht’s acceptance speech after receiving the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Ken B. Jones Award on Monday, Aug. 5, 1996. The annual award recognizes the top male and female student-athletes in the conference. Pracht completed a three-year career at PSU with a 3.95 GPA, graduating with a biology (pre-medicine) degree. She also was named the GTE Academic All-American of the Year for college division women’s basketball in 1996.

I stand here today simply for one reason – I’m a competitor. As are all of you. I compete in everything I do. I competed fiercely on the court and I competed in the classroom. Every test, I had to get the best grade. Rarely did I get the best grade, but that’s what I always shot for. I always wanted to beat everyone else. I compete on the highway. As I was driving here I had to drive the fastest of everyone. And Dad pays some high insurance for that. I compete at my job. I have to have the most work across my desk every day or else it’s not a productive day for Jenny. And it’s simply why I’m here. As I was speaking with Ken Jones, I was thinking about the Olympics and how fortunate that I have been to be an athlete for so long and compete in athletics. And I think of all those great stories that we’ve all seen in the past two weeks about people who didn’t quite make it or people that surprised people. And I think that with all the attention the Olympics are getting, I’ve gotten to feel all those feelings that those Olympians have felt. Obviously at different levels – I’m not an Olympian by any means. For example, there are people that just make the final heat and they come in eighth and you never see them and you never hear about them. But I’ve been on teams where it was great to lose by less than 20 – and I know how those people feel. Gail Devers was supposed to win the 100-meter hurdles but she comes in fifth. My senior year in high school, we were supposed to win state and we didn’t even make it to the state tournament. I know how she feels. Gary Hull, the swimmer, he just couldn’t quite get the gold. I never beat Central (Missouri) at Central (Missouri). There’s some good things too. I was thinking about the boxer (David Reid) who I was watching just yesterday. It was the third and final round and he had no prayer of winning and he knocked the guy out for the gold medal. I think we were playing, I believe it was Northeast (Missouri), and we were behind by more than 20 with five minutes to go and some how, some way, we pulled it together and won. And it happened to be Coach High’s 100th win and I got to give his late father a hug after that game. That’s a very special memory for me now, after the recent passing away of his father. I think about the story of the Olympics - Kerri Strug with the vault to win the gold medal. And in my 14 years of playing basketball, I hit a last-second shot one time. And it happened to be my last season to help me win a gold (conference title) ring. I look at it very proudly every day. By any means, she had a lot of competitors and teammates that were there for her to help her out. To know for one second that you are that important...

You’ve got the whole world concentrating on this two-week thing - I have lived this for 14 years. And it’s been a very great experience for me. And I always get emotional because of the times I had. I have to get up here and say that playing basketball has been the most important thing I’ve ever done. I don’t know if that says a lot about how I care about basketball or what I’ve ever done. But it’s been very important and I know that I’m very fortunate, very lucky to have been a student-athlete, especially at Pittsburg State. I need to thank a couple of people. My Mom and Dad (Cindy and Fred Pracht) came up today They believe in me like you couldn’t imagine. They’re crazy - they think I can do anything. Coach High, I know he couldn’t be here. He’s very stressful in athletics, and in academics he’s even more so. And he never said a word to me about how important school is. If he were here today he would tell you that he never had to. But the importance that he puts on academics is a lot more than what he puts on athletics. And just knowing how important it is to him made it that much more important to me. And he really doesn’t accept just kids staying eligible or getting by or even doing pretty good. If I hadn’t done my best in the classroom he would have been very disappointed in me, and that’s just something you don’t want to do to your coach, as you all know. So thank you to Mom and Dad and Coach High and to Ken Jones for creating such an award that honors young athletes as students also.Thank you very much.
