2018 PITT GYMNASTICS MEET NOTESPITT VERSUS EASTERN MICHIGAN• The Panthers will square off against Eastern

Michigan for the 12th time in program history, with the Eagles holding the all-time series edge over Pitt, 7-4.

• EMU came out with a 196.225-194.200 victory when the two teams last met March 5, 2017.

• The Eagles have won the past three meetings against the Panthers.

SCOUTING EASTERN MICHIGAN• Eastern Michigan is 0-3 on the season and 0-2

in MAC action. Most recently, the Eagles lost to Bowling Green, 195.025-193.950, Friday Jan. 19.

• The Eagles roster is comprised of seven freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and five seniors.

• Redshirt senior Lacey Rubin leads the team in two events with a season average of 9.817 on bars and 9.733 on beam. Sophomore Emili Dobronics leads the team on floor with a season average score of 9.792 and senior Kendall Valentin leads the team on vault with a 9.783.

PITT VERSUS RUTGERS• Pitt will matchup against Rutgers for the 51st time

in program history, with the Panthers owning the all-time series edge against the Scarlet Knights, 32-18.

• Rutgers defeated Pitt in their last contest, recording a 193.550-193.100 victory January 30, 2016.

• The Panthers have recorded 14 wins in their past 21 meetings with Rutgers.

SCOUTING RUTGERS• Rutgers is 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten

competition. Most recently, the Scarlet Knights fell to Nebraska, 196.300-192.975, Saturday Jan. 20.

• The Scarlet Knights roster is comprised of five freshman, seven sophomores, four juniors and three seniors.

• Freshman Belle Huang leads the team in two events with a season average of 9.838 on beam and 9.650 on vault. Senior Libby Groden leads the team on bars with a season average mark of 9.787 and freshman Toni Williams leads the team on floor with a season average of 9.775.

THE MEET• Pitt (1-1, 1-0 EAGL) will face the Spartans (0-3, 0-2

B1G), Eagles (0-3, 0-2 MAC) and Scarlet Knights (1-3, 0-2 B1G) Saturday, Jan. 27. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT• The Panthers posted the third highest team score

in program history in a 196.225-195.175 win against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20 in the team’s first EAGL meet of the season.

• The Panthers broke the program record on bars with a 49.275 and tied the program record on beam with a 49.125. Pitt also posted a 48.975 on floor and a 48.850 on vault.

• Four Pitt gymnasts collected individual titles in the meet. Freshman Haley Brechwald tied on bars, while winning floor and the all-around title outright. Senior Catie Conrad tied on bars and beam, while sophomore Alecia Petrikis won vault and junior Lucy Brett tied on bars.

PITT VERSUS MICHIGAN STATE• Pitt will face Michigan State for the 28th time in

program history, with the Spartans controlling the all-time series with a 21-6 advantage.

• The Panthers won their last meeting against Michigan State, recording a 195.375-194.600 victory March 3, 2017.

• Pitt and the Spartans have split their past four matchups.

2018 PITT GYMNASTICS MEET NOTESREVISTING ROWE’S PANTHER PAST• Before leaving for Michigan State in 2014, head

coach Mike Rowe served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Pitt gymnastics team under Debbie Yohman for nine seasons. With the Panthers, Rowe’s primary coaching focus was bars.

• During his nine-year tenure, Rowe was a two-time Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year and coached two EAGL bar champions, three EAGL Rookies of the Year and multiple NCAA regional qualifiers on bars.

FROM PITTSBURGH PANTHER TO SPARTAN STAFFER• Former Panther gymnast Brittney Harris was

added to the MSU staff as an assistant coach Aug. 17, 2017.

• During her senior season at Pitt in 2014, Harris earned First-Team All-EAGL and First-Team All-Tournament honors on the way to qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships as an all-arounder.

• Michigan State head coach Mike Rowe was a part of Pitt’s staff during Harris’ time with the Panthers.

RECORD BREAKING SEASON OPENER• Despite falling to Oregon State, 194.850-194.125,

in their season opener, the Panthers captured a program record for the highest season-opening total at 194.125. The previous record was set in 2012, when Pitt scored a 193.850 in a dual meet against Maryland.

• The Panthers posted their best event score on floor, earning a mark of 48.950, while following with a 48.700 on vault. On bars the squad finished with a 48.650 and earned a mark of 47.825 on beam.

• Pitt saw action from 12 of its gymnasts, with two Panthers collecting individual event titles. The Panthers’ freshman Haley Brechwald won vault outright and tied for the all-around title. Brechwald and senior transfer Catie Conrad were also a part of a four-way tie for first on bars.

SETTING THE BAR HIGH• The Panthers set the program record on bars in

their meet against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20.

• The team recorded a 49.275, breaking the previous record of 49.200 set by the 1999 Pitt squad.

TEAM TIES BEAM RECORD• Pitt tied the program record on beam in its contest

against New Hampshire, Saturday, Jan. 20.• The Panthers posted a 49.125, a feat only the 2003

and 2004 Pitt teams previously accomplished.

A FRESHMAN TO FEAR• Pitt freshman Haley Brechwald received EAGL

Rookie of the Week honors for the second-consecutive time after continuing her strong start to the season against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20.

• Brechwald has collected six individual titles through two meets. Against the Wildcats, she took home the bars, floor and all-around title against the Wildcats. Against Oregon State, she won vault, bars and the all-around title.

• Brechwald is currently averaging scores of 9.863 on floor, 9.825 on bars, 9.787 on vault and 9.638 on beam for an all-around average of 39.112.

PITT, MICHIGAN CONNECTION• The Panthers have three gymnasts who’s

hometown is within a two hour radius of East Lansing, Mich. in freshman Sophie Bochenek, sophomore Lucy Jones and senior Catie Conrad.

CONRAD FACES FORMER TEAM• Senior transfer Catie Conrad will face her former

team Saturday in Eastern Michigan.• Conrad spent her first three years with the Eagles,

where she was a two-time Second Team All-MAC honoree and a two-time member of the All-Tournament Team.

2018 PITT GYMNASTICS MEET NOTESBLUE-GOLD INTRASQUAD • The Panthers held their Blue-Gold Intrasquad

meet December 18 at the Fitzgerald Field House.• The event, which was open exclusively to season

ticket holders, concluded the Panthers preseason which featured months of conditioning and training sessions, along with four intrasquad meets dating back to August.

• Pitt saw action from 14 of its 17 gymnasts, including senior transfer Catie Conrad and all three of the squad’s freshmen.

• The Panthers showcased lineups on all four events starting with vault. Pitt’s top performances came from junior Kensleigh Owens and sophomore Deven Herbine, as both earned a 9.800 on the event.

• Up next was bars, which saw sophomore Rachel Dugan and junior Lucy Brett tie for first on the event. Both Panther gymnasts put up a 9.850.

• Pitt continued the evening on beam, where the team posted its highest team score, led by Taylor Laymon. The senior posted a near-perfect 9.900, while Brett followed with a 9.850.

• Sophomore Alecia Petrikis and Owens rounded out the Panthers’ top scores at the intrasquad, both tallying a 9.800 on floor.

CORE RETURNING CAST• The Panthers will be returning 13 members from

last season’s squad, including NCAA Regional qualifier and senior Taylor Laymon. Fellow senior Dani Hall will also be returning. They are joined by five juniors and six sophomores.

NOTABLE NEWCOMERS• The Panthers welcome four new faces to the 2018

squad, including senior Eastern Michigan transfer Catie Conrad, who is expected to play a large role for Pitt in her final season of eligibility.

• Freshmen Sophie Bochenek, Haley Brechwald and Jordan Ceccarini are also expected to make an immediate impact for the Panthers.

BRECHWALD TABBED EAGL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK• Pitt freshman Haley Brechwald was tabbed EAGL

Rookie of the Week following a phenomenal debut with the Panthers.

• Brechwald earned an outright title on vault, while tying for first place on bars and in the all-around. She posted or tied for the highest score in every event for the Panthers besides beam.

CONRAD OFFICIALLY BEGINS PANTHER CAREER• Senior Eastern Michigan transfer Catie Conrad

competed in her first meet with Pitt last Saturday.• Conrad posted a 9.525 on vault, a 9.725 on floor,

tied a team-high on bars at 9.775 and scored a team-high 9.775 on beam for an all-around score of 38.800.

KENSLEIGH’S COMEBACK• Junior Kensleigh Owens returned to action after

not competing in 2017.• Owens posted a career-high 9.775 on vault for a

second-place finish, while also performing on floor for the first time in her career, where she scored a 9.800.

SNIDER HEADS NEW STAFF • Samantha Snider was named the head coach of

the Pitt gymnastics team this past June, becoming just the third head coach in program history.

• Prior to Pitt, Snider spent the past nine seasons at the University of Arkansas in various roles and was named the 2016 NACGC/W South Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

• Shortly after her hiring, Snider announced the addition of Dave Kuzara and Ryan Snider to the coaching staff. Kuzara comes to Pittsburgh from Michigan where he previously served as an assistant coach. Ryan Snider served as a volunteer assistant coach also at the University of Arkansas.

EAGL PRESEASON POLL • Pitt is projected to finish the 2018 season fourth in the

EAGL, the league announced December 20. • George Washington is predicted to finish first in the

conference, followed by New Hampshire and NC State.

FROM EASTERN MICHIGAN TO PITT• Senior transfer Catie Conrad comes to Pittsburgh

as a true senior, having spent the past three years with the Eagles.

• Conrad found success at Eastern Michigan, earning Second Team All-MAC honors and MAC All-Tournament accolades in both 2016 and 2017.

• Last season for the Eagles, she earned career high scores on bars (9.900) and floor (9.850), and in the all-around (39.350) at the MAC Championship. Conrad also posted a new best on beam (9.900) versus Kent State earlier in the season. Her score on bars earned her a share of the MAC title, while she finished third in the all-around.

• Conrad also achieved at a high standard in the classroom, earning Academic All-MAC honors twice, while making the Dean’s List four straight semesters. She also earned NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors following her freshman season and was selected to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum this past June.

A LOOK BACK AT 2017• Pitt finished the 2017 season 9-19 overall and 1-6 in

EAGL competition, but had two gymnasts qualify for the NCAA Regional Meet.

• Current senior Taylor Laymon qualified on bars, while former Panther Tracey Pearson earned a spot in the vault rotation.

• At the 2017 EAGL Championships, Pitt closed out the season with a fifth place finish in the six-team meet, despite winning the title in 2016.

• The Panthers recorded a season-best score of 195.375 in a tri-meet at home against WVU, Michigan State and Towson.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE• On November 9, 2017, head coach Samantha Snider

announced that four student-athletes will join the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics program as a part of the squad’s 2018 recruiting class.

• The Panthers will welcome Katie Chamberlain, Caitlyn Kline, Olivia Miller and Kiley Robatin.
