    January 2020

Rich Thoughts from the Executive Director

    Happy NEW YEAR to everyone!

What a great year 2019 was and, geez, are we looking ahead to 2020. The

Council on Aging will be offering more programs, more services and more opportunities for you

to be a part of all that we do.

Last year would not have been as good of a year as it was, if it were not for an incredible staff who

is always serving and volunteers who give their time to serve others. If you knew all that goes on

behind the scenes, you’d be as amazed as I am, and I work here.

This year, we have four road trips lined up going to St. Augustine Florida, Savannah Georgia,

Nashville Tennessee and New York City for Christmas. Each trip helps to support programs and

    services here at the COA.

Our Home Safety and Falls Prevention private pay in home programs are reaching many new

clients who did not know we offer cutting edge assessments by trained professionals. These

services have and can save lives. Proactive prevention is the key to safety and each private pay

service helps us to support another client who otherwise could not afford this on their own.

Room rentals, Ensure products, private and business donations and feebased classes all help

towards offsetting the costs so we can serve more people who are in great need right here in Pitt

County. This year I CHALLENGE you to see how you can connect with the COA on some level

to improve the lives of others. Make it your New Year’s resolution today!

Blessings for a healthy and prosperous 2020,

    Rich

    Executive Director

    Generations Music

Many children do not have an opportunity to connect with their grandparents.

We are striving to create an opportunity for friends 55+ to spend time with

young children and their parents. Music creates the structure, but the purpose is

to build friendships in a low stress, fun environment.

$60 covers the cost of the ‘Grandfriends’ curriculum, so you’ll have the

songbook, cd, and lyric sheet, 10 weeks of classes, and most importantly an

opportunity to build friendships with wonderful children and their parents.

    Physical Therapy Healthy Aging Minute

I hope that your holiday season has been joy filled and

that you are remembering to try to do a little extra activity

if you have an extra helping of those delicious

goodies. New Year’s Day will be here very soon.

January is a month of new beginnings, so we are going to

    start with the basics.

    How am I doing?

One way to measure how we are doing is by Vital

Signs. Vital signs are typically the heart rate, respiration

rate, blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen saturation

    (finger probe).

Some people say that the sixth vital sign for seniors

should be gait speed. I tend to agree since I am a physical

therapist. I will be coming to all five COA Senior Centers

in January with the tools needed to measure your vital

signs. We are planning to continue with our monthly

visits throughout the year so think about how I can be of

assistance as we all continue to stay healthy as we age.
