  • Pitch (p) measurement Equipments that can be used are:-

  • The pitch measuring machine has a base on which two assemblies are present:-

    (a) One for the movement of the job or thread held between the centres. The screw shown can move this assembly on the guides

    (b) The second: The fiducial indicator, alignment of stylus and measurement by vernier are together form the 2nd assembly. It has two screws: one for movement of the stylus longitudinally over the thread grooves and the other for cross movement to increase or decrease the fiducial indicator pressure (L) as the stylus is spring loaded. However the alignment of the stylus against the fixed mark (T) is done simultaneously operating the transverse screw (stylus pressure) and longitudinal screw (vernier scale) for stylus movement.

  • From the above, ensure two aspects: That the pressure on the stylus on each thread groove is same AND the stylus axis is perpendicular to the job axis. Moreover, Stylus size is important (a standard size) as it contacts the pitch line at the flank. The pitch measurement is given by the vernier scale shown when the stylus is mover from one groove to the other. Take several readings in consecutive thread grooves.
