Earlier this year, I was honored to have the privilege of sitting down with Etsy and doing an interview about how to pitch to bloggers. If you’re thinking about pitching your product/website to a blogger or are just curious about the process, be sure to watch this video. (Then come back and read the rest of this kit!) :)

Getting found amongst a sea of incredibly talented artisans can seem difficult, daunt-ing or downright impossible. One of the best ways to gain notice with shoppers is to get your product featured on a blog. Here are a few tips to help you get started!

HAVE GREAT PHOTOS

Pictures are everything. Most bloggers hold a high standard for photos, as the pictures on a blog tell a story and help maintain a theme, so yours will need to fit in with the overall aesthetic.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Before approaching a blog, make sure to do your research! If you’re not already a loyal reader, catch up on their latest posts, read their about page, and any informa-tion they provide regarding submissions. Make sure to ask yourself, “Does my product fit in with the overall theme, look and feel of the blog?” Referencing a recent post in your pitch will let them know that you’ve read their blog and care about their mission.

BE PE RSONABLE

Bloggers are people, just like you! Learn their name and use it in your email. Pretend that you are meeting them the first time over coffee. Be polite, sweet and brief.

HAVE A STORY

Having a story about your product or a few fun facts like how you got started or how you fell in love your craft will help make you memorable and give the blogger a story-line to consider writing about. Just remember to keep it brief! One to two short para-graphs should be enough to pitch your story and engage the blogger without taking up too much of their time.

CONNECT

Connections go a long way. Be meaningful in the way you interact with your online community. Follow the people you are pitching to on their social media sites and con-sider contributing thoughtful comments to their blog posts.

A NOTE ON ET IQUETTE

I know several questions arise when someone decides to pitch to a blogger, so here are a few things to keep in mind:

A FEW EXAMPLES

Here's an example of a successful pitch email, from YOKE

THREE

Be brief. You should be able to tell your story, pitch your product and engage the blogger within 1-2 paragraphs.

Include 2-3 low-res images (72 dpi) or provide a link to your shop for them to glance at.

Don’t forget your links! Include links to your shop, blog and/or website.

E-mail one blogger at a time, and never mass e-mail. Bloggers like exclu-sivity, so emailing one at a time will be in your best interest. Give them about a week before moving on to the next one.

Feel free to send a follow up email to touch base with them again if you haven’t heard back after a week.

SOME F INAL WORDS

Bloggers in the handmade community write because they love to blog about great products and share creative inspirations. They are always looking for material and really appreciate an eye-catching product. So, what do you have to lose? The worst that can happen is that they’ll say no (and possibly provide invaluable feedback) or just not reply. If this is the case, keep your head up and move on to the next one. We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Bonnie!

I thought I would let you know about my new jewelry collection launching next Friday, May 4th. I'm so excited about it! It's called the Coastal Collection and is inspired by, well, coastlines. Specifically, the coasts of the northern oceans and of the Great Lakes here in Michigan. I took the soft tones and textures, as well as the more geometric aspects, and put them in this jewelry. The collection is soft and airy, like a perfect morn-ing on the beach. Of course, all of the stones are completely natural and unique, and I've made each piece by hand. The prices range from $30-$95. I know your readers have really liked my jewelry in the past, so I thought they might like to see the new col-lection, too. :)

Thanks so much for your time, Bonnie! I hope you guys have a relaxed week :)

xoxoBrittany Campbell
