KLINGER piston valvesOptimization through experience
Piston valves KVN
Excellent ideas are lastingIn the year 1922 Richard KLINGER thefounder of this company had an idea, the principle of which is still valid to-day. He designed the first piston valve. He replaced the sealing system of aconventional globe valve with a cylin-drical piston and two elastic replaceablejointing rings.
Environmentally safe and energyefficientConstant research and further develop-ment yield a quality, which comesthrough brilliantly in extreme applica-tions and is marked by the slightest ofleak rates. KLINGER piston valves arethe best solution in hot water-, steam-,heat transfer medium- and dry gas ap-plication.
Tested and certifiedKLINGER KVN piston valves have beentested by independent research insti-tutes under the toughest conditions.
They passed the Fire-safe test accord-ing to API 6FA as well as the Helium-leakage test with best results. These re-sults impressively prove the exceptionalefficiency of KLINGER piston valves.
Today, piston valves are manufacturedbased on the state of the art techniqueand according to the highest quality re-quirements of ISO 9001.
Efficiency and reliabilityThe sealing element is formed by twoelastic valve rings enveloping a stain-less steel piston. The upper valve ringseals to the outside, the lower ringseals across the port. Due to the largepiston skirt the sealing effect is optmal. As the valve closes the piston removesimpurities which the medium mightcontain from the inside of the lowervalve ring. In this way the valve reliablyseals off even contaminated media. Inprinciple, damage to the sealing surfaceis precluded and tightness is guaran-teed as a result.
Excellent control characteristicsThe standard version of the KLINGERpiston valve is already very well suitedfor controlling the flow. Because thepiston is guided by the upper and thelower valve ring vibration and instabilityin the pipe does not occure. KLINGERpiston valves have proved to be excel-lent as by-pass control valves.
Through simple replacement of the pis-ton and the lantern bush the KVN canbe retrofitted to act as a special preci-sion control valve.
In-line valve ring replacementA newly installed piston valve does notrequire any maintenance for a long timeafter. However, the spindle should beregularly lubricated. If nevertheless avalve ring wears out it can be replacedwithout problems while remaining inthe line and, if assembly instructionsare followed, it can be changed by in-house personnel. After replacement the valve is like new.

KX-GT: Competitiveless in sealingEnvironmentally safe and energy efficient
The core of the piston valve: Thevalve rings KX-GTThe high quality valve ring KX-GT ismade of graphite laminate with tangmetal sheet inserts made of stainlesssteel. The valve is absolutely asbestos-and maintenance-free. The variablethermal expansions which occur underalternating thermal loads are completelycompensated by KX-GT-valve rings, which were presealed in a built-in con-dition.
Long term sealing even at highestdemandsMedia in the temperature range between–.40 °C and +.400 °C and at pressuresof up to 63 bar, can be reliably con-trolled. KX-GT valve rings are excellentfor the use in temperature shock opera-tion as well as steam condensate alter-nating-operation. (Flash-application).
Pressure releaved pistonIn order to ensure convenient actuationat high differential pressures, the pis-tons of the KVN range are made of caststeel, whereof the sizes DN 65 to 200
are pressure releaved. The spindle issealed with a gland and an additionalvalve ring provides the sealing betweenthe body and the bonnet.

Actuators for KVNElectro mechanical and pneumatic actuators
Pneumatic actuatorThe pneumatic actuator is single actingand offers an ON/OFF-function. It is of-ten preferred to the electro mechanicalactuator for many reasons. The actuator closes the valve withspring force (security !) and opens itwith air pressure. Safe control mediaare compressed air and nitrogen at amaximum of 6 bar. Compresssed airsupply: R 1/4 , measurement, weightand valve lift at request.Pneumatic actuators can be applied atambient temperatures between –.30 °Cand +.90 °C. The standard version in-cludes pneumatic diaphragm actuator, end switch, stroke scale and a mechani-cal valve lifting stop. Special designwith hand emergency-switch is availa-ble.
Electro mechanical actuatorVarious designs at request

KVN Fire-safe
KVN with heating jacketAll KLINGER piston valves KVN can beprovided with heating jacket.Overall- / connection dimensions andapplication range, see the appropriateproduct pages.KLINGER piston valves with heatingjacket are designed for the use with vis-cous media or media which solidifywhen cold. The jacket is made of stainless steel1.4541 and may be used with all heat-ing fluids for which steel piping is suit-able. Two heating connections and adrain connection are provided on theheating jacket. The max. heating fluidpressure is 6 bar. Since considerablecondensation may be expected in theheating jacket when steamheating isused, it is advisable to connect a steamtrap to the drain connection of thejacket. Max. pressure of heating me-dium 6 bar.

KVN Fire-safe testedacc. to API 6FAThe Fire-safe test was conducted byTÜV inAustria, acc. to API Standard GEA andISO 10497.The Fire-safe-type KVN requires a spe-cial type of sealing elements across theport which the KVN is supplied withand can also be retrofitted withoutproblems. This is the advantage of theKLINGER-modular systems.

Special designsKVN KX1 for TA-Luft and EPA applications
KVN 10.–.50 KVN 65.–.200
KVN KX-1 for TA-Luft and EPAapplicationsThe standard KX-GT valve ring of thisspecial design is equipped with addi-tional Klingerflon gaskets. These addi-tional rings are joined to the uppervalve ring resp. the stuffing box. Thissystem guarantees lowest leakage rates(2 ppm !) and meets the TA-Luft andEPA-requirements even better than con-ventional sealings. All other parts of the valves are as in thestandard design and the accordingspecifications.Media in the temperature range from–.196 °C to +.300 °C and pressures upto 63 bar can be reliably sealed with theKLINGER piston valve KVN with KX-1sealing system.
All KLINGER piston valves already inservice can easily be equipped with theKX-1 system without dissambly.

1) Piston and piston shaft in 1.4404 (please specifywhen ordering).2) Discoloration may occur.3) With heat-transfer media please inquire in ourGumpoldskirchen factory regarding choice of valve
rings. Please state the type of medium and the tem-perature range. Cast iron is chemically resistant toheat transfer media but, in view of the ability of thesemedia to penetrage the pores, it is not recommended
4) All ferrous materials are resistant to hydrogen; it ispointed out, however, that hydrogen diffuses throughcast iron and can cause embrittlement.5) 150 °C
