AboutSaSaArtProjects

SaSaArtProjectsisPhnomPenh'sonlynot-for-profitartist-runspace,andwasfoundedin

2010byoneofCambodiasonlyartistscollectives,StievSelapak(currentlycomprising

artistsKhvaySamnang,LimSokchanlinaandVuthLyno).Locatedinthehistoric,vibrantand

dilapidatedapartmentcomplexknownastheWhiteBuilding,SaSaArtProjectsaimstofosteracommunityofknowledgesharingandtocreateopportunitiesforemerging

Cambodianartiststorealisenewideas.Weserveasavenuetoaccommodateexperimental

artpractices,residencies,talksandoccasionalexhibitionsdesignedbyandforresidentsin

ourmarginalizedcommunity.Wealsorunregularclassesincontemporaryart,offeredfree

everyweektoresidentsoftheneighbourhoodandsurrounds.

AboutPisaot-ExperimentalArtsResidencyProgram

ExperimentationisoneofSaSaArtProjectscentralaimsandvalues.Workingtorebuild

andstrengthencontemporaryartinCambodia,weemphasizetheimportanceoflearning

together.WebelievethatinCambodiatoday,thechallengeistofindoutwhatelsecouldbe

possible.Artistsneedtotakerisks,andneedthefreedomtonothavetoworryaboutafinal

outcome.Pisaot,ourExperimentalArtsResidencyProgramtobehostedatSaSaArt

Projects,willnotaskartiststomakeworkforanexhibition.Infact,itwillgiveartists

freedomtodoanythingtheywant.Artists-in-residencewillbeencouragedtotrynewways

tousedifferentmedia;anyandallideasarepossible,aslongastheyarenew.

Inshort,artistsareaskedtoexplorenewpossibilitiesforart.Thisisachallenge,encouraging

artiststobemorecreativethanever,andalsoacallforCambodianandinternational

audiencestothinkexpansivelyaboutthebreadthofwhatmightconstituteart.

Residenciesareofsixweeksduration.Artistspreferencesfortimingwillbeconsidered

amongotherfactorsintheschedulingofresidencies.Artists-in-residencewillbeselected

bothbyapplicationandbyinvitation.

Duringthesixweekresidency,theartistisexpectedtoliveandworkintheSaSaArt

Projectsspace,intheWhiteBuilding,PhnomPenh.Thelevelofengagementwiththe

communityisuptotheindividualartist,butpleaserememberthatSaSaArtProjectsworks

closelywithourneighbourssoitsimportantwemaintainfriendlyrelationshipswiththem.

SaSaArtProjectswillprovidetheartist-in-residencewiththefollowing:

- Private,secureaccommodationinSaSaArtProjectsspace.- Perdiemof40,000riel($US10.00)perday,forthedurationoftheresidency,totaling

1,800,000riel($US450).

- Artistsmaterialsfee,foruseinpurchaseofanymaterialsrequiredduringtheresidency,ofupto600,000riel($150.00).

- RegularsupportfromtheSaSaArtProjectsteam,aswellasourstudents,collaborators,colleaguesandfriends.Thissupportmayincludepracticalortechnical

advice,introductionstonetworks,andaccesstoarchivesandresearchmaterials.

- Aninformalmentorshipforthedurationoftheresidencywithseniorartist/sinCambodiaand/ortheregion,selectedonacase-by-casebasisdependingonthe

interestsoftheartist-in-residence.

- Theopportunitytomakeapublicpresentationduringtheresidency,whichmaybeanartiststalk,workshop,skill-sharing,openstudio,ortakeanyotherformdecided

byagreementbetweentheartist-in-residenceandSaSaArtProjects.

SaSaArtProjectswillasktheartist-in-residencetodothefollowing:

- Toexperiment.Theartist-in-residenceshouldviewtheresidencyasafull-timeimmersionintheprocessoftryingnewapproaches.Theartist-in-residenceis

encouragedtotakerisks,andisremindedthatitisnotnecessarytoproduceanyfinishedworkforexhibition.

- Tocontributeimagesand/ortextdocumentingtheresidency,withafocusonprocess,forinclusionintwice-yearlypublicationofthePisaot-ExperimentalArts

ResidencyProgram.

- Attheconclusionofthefirstyear-longcycleoftheresidencyprogram(in2014),SaSaArtProjectswillpresentapublicexhibition,whichitisanticipatedwillinclude

selectedoutcomesfromsomeoftheresidencies.Notallartists-in-residencewillbe

includedinthisexhibition:whetheranartistisincludedwillbedecidedthrougha

processofdiscussionbetweentheartistandtheorganisers.Artists-in-residenceare

notobligatedtocontributetothisexhibition,andtheexhibitionmayalsoinclude

workdrawnfromoutsideofthePisaot-ExperimentalArtsResidencyProgram.

Selectioncriteria

Artists-in-residenceforthePisaot-ExperimentalArtsResidencyProgramwillbeselected

bothbyapplicationandbyinvitationbySaSaArtProjects(KhvaySamnang,Lim

SokchanlinaandVuthLyno).

Ofanexpectedsixresidenciesinthefirstyear-longcycleoftheprogram,amajoritywillbe

Cambodianartists.Ofthese,atleastonewillbedrawnfromthecommunityoftheWhiteBuilding,inwhichourspaceislocated.Internationalartists-in-residencewillreceivelimited

assistancewithtravel,negotiatedonacase-by-casebasis.

Applicationsareopentovisualartistsatanyleveloftheirpractice,workinginanymedia,ofanyage.

Althoughanartistsexperience(includingexhibitedandunexhibitedpastwork)willbe

considered,thestrengthofanartistsapplicationwillbegivenatleastequalweightinthe

decision-makingprocess.Anartistsdemonstratedwillingnessandabilitytoexperimentand

toopentheirpracticetonewideasandnewapproacheswillbemostfavourablyregarded.

Application

ApplicationsmaybesubmittedinKhmerorinEnglish,andmustinclude:

- Astatementexplainingyourpastpractice,previousorexistingareasofinterest,andmediawithwhichyouhavepreviouslyworked.(Minimum150words)

- Astatementexplainingyourproposedprojectfortheresidency.Whatdoyouhopetolearn?Totry?Tomake?Todo?Whatarethereasonsbehindyourproposal?

(Minimum300words)

- Examplesofpastwork,realisedornotyetrealised,and/orofthekindofexperimentsyouwishyoudoduringtheresidency.(Approximately5-10images

and/oraudio/videofiles).

- Indicationofpreferencesfortimingoftheresidency.PleasenotethatalthoughSaSaArtProjectswillendeavortomeetthesuccessfulapplicantspreferences,thismay

notalwaysbepossible.Schedulingwillbeconfirmedinconsultationwithsuccessful

applicants.
