1961: Calcolatrice elettronica pisana (CEP) was born as the first calculator in Italy, created by a research group coordinated by M. Conversi and A. Faedo.CSCE (Centro Studi Calcolatrici Elettroniche) is founded inside CNR. Later the center was named IEI (Istituto per l’Elaborazione dell’Informazione)
1965: Faedo opens the CNUCE (Centro nazionale universitario di calcolo elettronico) in Pisa University, sponsored by IBM
1986: CNUCE establishes the first Internet connection between Italy and U.S.A.. It is currently named IIT (Istituto di Informatica e Telematica)

- Institute of Bio-Robotics of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, located in Pontedera, in the Polo Sant’Anna Valdera, it is engaged in humanoid robotics, bio-inspired robotics, robotics for assistance, rehab and surgery

- Centro E. Piaggio , placed in the Building of Engineering Faculty in Pisa, it operates in the fields of Robotics (mobile robots, human/machines interfaces, etc.) and bio-Engineering (senses and artificial muscles, tissue engineering, etc.)
- PERCeptive RObotics (PERCRO) : the Laboratory belongs to TeCIP (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna). It realized the first ‘’esoskeleton for strength amplification servant’’ made in Italy and that can be considered the most complex wearable robotic system in the world
One more sector that is strongly growing is Robotic s Surgery:
- Multidisciplinary Center of Robotic Surgery: research center in the University Hospital Authority of Pisa. Here they use the Da Vinci SDSi , one of the most important and used surgery robot actually

- Polo Sant’Anna Valdera : scientific park where robotics in endoscopy is conducted. Capsules have been developed which work as a sort of micro-robot. This robot is used in the exploration of human body and the acquisition of useful information, such as in the colonoscopy field

Pharmaceutical industry : started in the early 1900s in Pisa, when trade with Germany - leader in producing and exporting pharmaceuticals - ceased. This indirectly gave impetus to transform the (at that time) underdeveloped sector in Italy
