CONCEPT Years ago, constructivism was at the heart of propaghanda, driving self pride and empowering it’s viewers. This same idea was carried into my propaghanda poster. For propaghanda to be effective, it must have a purpose and a message. Pirate Radio is nothing new and has a call to arms that people can get behind. Especially since it’s driven by a network of users, Pirate Radio can only succeed by the support of an underground movement. For this reason, Pirate Radio was the perfect choice. Pirate radio is an unauthorized and unregulated distribution of music. It allows the audience to find bands that would typically be ignored by typical radio stations.

It also allows for stations to play music as they feel fit, without regulation, allowing for a better listening experience and stronger presentation of artists in their entirety. Nothing needs to be censored and nothing needs to be approved. It’s pure music presented in the way it was meant to be heard. A movement such as pirate radio is perfect for a propaghanda ad. It has a message, to empower the viewer, and get them involved within the subject. It’s a sort of call to arms aimed at music enthusiasts and those who are willing to be part of something hidden from society’s view. Pirate radio was created to empower the listener and this piece is it’s recruitment.

Propaghanda posters were prevalent in the early to mid 1900’s. Old and new posters are needed to find the right ideas and execution for the project at hand. Understanding the nature of the style is a must. The older images found are needed to find the pieces that constructivism was founded upon. The new posters show techniques that can be utilized with current technology. By studying both options, the idea can begin to start taking shape.

RESEARCHFinding a wide range of research is key to developing a unique and professional design.

THUMbNAils

Thumbnails are made to explore every

possible idea, before commiting to a design.

Jumping on a idea too quickly can end with a

weak concept and poor end result.

For the propaghanda piece, solutions

ranged from skatingboarding to politics to

space. Each could have been sucessful in it’s

own right if executed properly, yet pirate radio

had a real-world cause that fit the situation in a

perfect way. Politics was too easy, skating and

space had too much disconnect. Yet, pirate

radio was a perfect subject for promotion.

Thumbnails will either make or

break a project and they’re absolutely essential

when considering a starting point for any proj-

ect. Without them, a design risks weak or cliche

execution.

The ideas ranged from super heroes, Mario, Star

Wars, skateboarding. Android and zombies.

ROUGHs Once deciding upon pirate radio, roughs are needed to further expand the best idea into a cohesive answer to the problem. Working layout is important here by ncluding text and images. Once a rough is decided upon, resource images are needed. Knowing the images needed before searching makes it easier to follow the guidelines and helps to avoid budging on layout to fit a less than perfect resource image. Tight roughs follow. These allow for layout to be tweaked multiple ways. After finding the best tight rough, a final is created by fully developing the layout and finalizing the design.

Finding the perfect resource is vital to a great

project. Never stop at the first option available.
