The Challenges of Repair & Maintenance

The repair and maintenance of hazardous gas and liquids pipelines present many challenges, especially when the pipeline must remain in-service. Selecting and implementing the correct repair method is crucial to maintaining throughput and to the integrity of the pipeline. DNV has the technical experience to select the most effective and economical repair method.

Repair Evaluation and Selection

DNV has a wealth of knowledge and experience with pipeline repair. We co-authored the update to the PRCI Pipeline Repair Manual and regularly work with clients on their most sensitive repair needs. Selecting an appropriate repair is critical to both the future integrity of the pipeline and potentially to the safety of the public. Our industry experts have decades of experience effectively assessing defects and recommending an efficient means of repair.

In-Service Welding

Welding onto an in-service pipeline is advantageous in that it allows cost-effective installation of branch connections (hot taps) and repair sleeves by avoiding the loss of pipeline throughput and contents. There are inherent risks, such as hydrogen cracking and burnthrough, associated with welding onto pipelines that contain pressurized fuel gasses or petroleum products. Errors during in-service welding can at best negate the advantages and at worst can result in costly unscheduled outages, damage to the environment, and injury to personnel or the public. There are many factors to consider when welding onto an in-service pipeline such as wall thickness, material grade, chemical composition, flow conditions, operating pressure, fatigue cycling, the welding process and consumables, the weight of the repair, etc. DNV has unparalleled industry experience working with in-service welding. We have published papers, regularly teach a course on repair and in-service welding and work with clients on a regular basis with their in-service welding issues.
