PIONEER MEMORIALCHURCH
OUR SPEAKER
ANDREA LUXTON
Today we welcome Andrea Luxton, to the Pioneer pulpit. Dr. Luxton
has served as provost of Andrews University since 2010. Prior to coming to Andrews, Luxton served as president of Canadian University College. She has also served the SDA church at various levels including serving as director of education for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Luxton received a BA in theology and English from Newbold College, an MA in English from Andrews University, a PhD in English from Catholic University of America and a Postgraduate Diploma in Institutional Management and Change in Higher Education from the University of Twente, Netherlands. She has written a number of articles for professional and church publications, often using these mediums as a way of connecting her passions for literature, education and the life of faith. She is also an experienced international speaker. Her hobbies include reading world literature and traveling to remote destinations.
WELCOME!On this summer’s graduation weekend, welcome to where Andrews University gathers year-round to worship God. The Lord of this House is the Lord of this campus. In celebration of His grace that has brought these graduates to this milestone of academic achievement and personal accomplishment, let us come before our God with rejoicing and thanksgiving. We welcome both our graduation visitors and our worship visitors. Come, let us worship Christ the Lord!

“I WILL DO A NEW THING”FORGIVENESS
The following anonymous story has occurred recently. The
ending is still in the future.About three months ago the
house of an Adventist man and his wife (Mr. and Mrs. X) was broken into by a thief. The losses were:
• An envelope with cash tithe• 2 pairs of designer sunglasses• A broken screen, window, and frameNothing else of value was taken
from the bedroom even though other more expensive articles were in the home. The thief had to practically crawl over an expensive computer graphics studio with four large monitors. Since January, Mr. X had been working 1½ hours away during the week, coming home only on weekends. Naturally, Mrs. X was quite concerned for her own safety. After reporting the theft to the police, they found out several thefts had occurred in their subdivision. A home security system was purchased and installed, but Mrs. X was still fearful that the house might be broken into again when she was alone.
About three weeks later, the police discovered the thief along with many stolen items from the neighborhood. The surprise was that the thief was actually the next door neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. X. who, on several occasions had invited him, his wife, and child into their home. The other neighborhood victims were incensed by this news, and
initially Mr. and Mrs. X were as well. But then they observed the people of the neighborhood shunning and ignoring the wife and baby who remained in the home.
After much prayer and soul-seeking, Mr. and Mrs. X decided to contact the wife next door and also texted the thief, offering to help in any way. After several more weeks the thief was seen at home and Mr. X went over to see his neighbor-thief. It turned out that the neighbor had been stealing to support a drug habit and had been in rehabilitation for almost a month. Mr. X and his neighbor sat in lawn chairs on Mr. X’s back patio and talked for quite a long time. Mr. X prayed with him and then gave a copy of The Great Controversy. The neighbor thanked Mr. X for his care and kindness.
What will God do through seeds of forgiveness in this rejected man’s life? What are you doing to help God do “a new thing” in others’ lives?
–Dennis Hollingsead

Because Pioneer Memorial Church members sponsor and support
God’s Abundant Pantry, local commercial growers, food retailers, wholesalers, and gardeners in our community are pleased to have a place to donate their surplus, dated,
too ripe to ship, seconds and dent and bent inventory to GAP. If GAP did not exist, most of these products would be feed for animals or thrown into a field or dumpster. These donations include: bulk grain flours, corn meal, dried milk, whole wheat seed; watermelon, strawberries, blue berries, peaches, apples, plus a wide variety of vegetables that are grown in this area.
These donations make a big difference in the lives of our students and their families. One grateful student family recently wrote us to show their appreciation. “Thank you, PMC members, for financially supporting ‘GAP’ and thanks to all the volunteers who are helping me and my family. Know that without your help I would not be able to fulfill the plan God has for me in this world. Many times I wonder how it would have turned out if there was no ‘GAP.’ Even with the help God’s Abundant Pantry provides, many months my income is not enough to meet our daily needs. We are very thankful for your efforts and may God bless you abundantly in return.“

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
THANKGod for parents who give their time
and talent to help our school
MORE INFODavid Waller / 471.3225
What are your memories from school? If you attended Ruth
Murdoch Elementary School it may be eating veggie hotdogs at the registration picnic, or perhaps tasting ethnic foods at the multicultural fair, or doing your first public singing at the talent show. All these activities create camaraderie among students, parents, staff and memories that will last a lifetime.
At Ruth Murdoch Elementary School we have a team of parents who selflessly dedicate their time and talents by actively supporting the school’s activities. They are part of the Home & School Association. This year thanks to their hard work and fund raising activities we upgraded our audio system and added radios to enhance security at our school.
Today we say, “Thank you,” to Belle Tan, our Home and School leader for the last three years. With the support of her husband Boon-Chai Ng, Professor of Engineering at Andrews University, and a dedicated group of parents we had three fantastic years. Thank you for a superb job!
Today we also welcome our new Home and School leader, Julie Reid. Julie and her husband Chuck, Coordinator for Voice Studies at Andrews University, have three children who attend Ruth Murdoch Elementary School. Julie has been a Home and School leader before and brings experience and new ideas. She is looking forward to getting to know the parents and teachers better as they work together.
“God is calling for men and women who are willing to deny self for the sake of others” (MYP, p217).

MUSIC ALIVEGUIDE ME
Images strikingly drawn characterize the emotive hymn “Guide Me, O
Thou Great Jehovah” (SDA Hymnal 538). Only think of Israel’s long, hard pilgrimage in the wilderness: The hymn’s images of “Bread of heaven,” “the healing stream,” “the fire and cloudy pillar,” etc. are secured by fascinating historical anchors. For many graduates, this weekend may mark a foray into a pilgrimage virtually unknown in even its main
outlines. Others probably have roles of service clearly delineated for years ahead. For all, the life they will lead is indeed a pilgrimage. Thinking back to the “Guide Me” hymn, today’s Closing Voluntary is based on the hymn’s “strong deliverer” imagery, expressing confidence in God’s sure leading and strong deliverance. So “. . . as we set forth” may we go with “cloud” and with “fire.”
The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.
As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep.
He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist.
He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.
