Head Pain Migraine, Part OneMany people suffer from head pain. I have had two migraines in my life and they are truly incapacitating. The physical mechanics of
migraine are as follows: Something causes a cluster of blood vessels in a part of the brain to contract (vasoconstriction). This may lastfor five to sixty minutes. During the period of vasoconstriction many people will experience something call an aura. This is a warningthat phase two is coming. The aura symptoms can be very frightening especially the first time. They include: nausea, photosensitivity(lights bother the eyes), noise sensitivity, smelling things that are not there, strange tastes in the mouth, flashes of light, wavy lines, blind spots, blindness in half of the visual field or in one eye, weakness in part of the body, creepy feelings in one part of the body, garbled speech, and more.
Phase two of the migraine involves a change in the blood vessels from constriction to dilation. It was taught for years that when thearea of blood vessels that were constricted and not getting enough blood flow, begin to dilate or enlarge, now that part of the brainbecames engorged with blood. The pressure that was then applied on the brain coverings and surrounding tissues caused the pain of
the migraine. There is some new evidence now that dilation of the blood vessels of the scalp may play a bigger role in the head painthan dilation of the brain blood vessels.
The aura can occur without pain following. This is called a silent migraine. And the pain can occur without the aura. Abdominalmigraines can occur and in this case, the pain in phase two occurs in the abdomen instead of the head.
Natural treatment focuses around what causes the initial constriction of the blood vessels. We believe that the cause of mostof these headaches is a chemical trigger that comes from foods or toxins. The cumulative effect of food additives, preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, etc as well as toxins in our air and water undoubtedly have some effect on the blood vessels andnerves of a genetically susceptible person. The offending trigger causes the cascade of events leading to pain.
We think the first step toward a cure is a colon cleanse. When I first heard this I laughed. How could the bowel and headaches beconnected? A colon cleanse heals the bowel lining so wastes and toxins in our food are dumped down the toilet and not absorbedinto our blood. Cleanses should not be used by a weak, debilitated person. Exercise is very important. Muscular activity moves wasteby-products from our cells through our routes of elimination and out of the body. Drinking lots of water reallyhelps. Food diaries may help identify triggers. Foods can affect us up to four days after we eat them. So, aftera migraine write down everything you have eaten for the previous four days. After a while you may see apattern immerge.
You can also do food elimination / challenge for the following food groups: dairy, wheat, corn, soy, andyeast (raised, aged, fermented, mushrooms). So, one food at a time, eliminate that group for two weeks, thenchallenge by eating foods in that group for one day, then observe for four days. If no migraine is tr iggered, goto the next group. If you get a headache after the challenge you know that is part of the trigger. It can be acomponent of the food or an additive if it is a processed food. If a reaction occurs, then eliminate that group
for three months and try it again. Reactions can be quantity related and it can be a cumulative effect of severalfoods from a certain group. Look to foods and your digestive system for the answer to migraine. There can beemotional and stress causes but that is a story for next time.
