Pamela Vallean, Call Center Host - VIP Reservations, started with L’Auberge in Lake Charles in 2005 and,

unfortunately, had to resign after five years with us in June of 2010 due to medical issues. After much hard work and success with her health, she returned September 2011 to the same department with open arms! During her absence, she was not only focusing on herself to get better, she was dedicated to taking on the task of caring for both of her parents. This was a new task she knew would be challenging, however she took it on with high hopes. Unfortunately, shortly after her return back to work, her father passed away in March of 2012, followed by her mother only four months later. Because I took out the time to just listen to Pam and talk with her, I realized all the challenges she was facing. After Pam was in a bad accident in February 2013, I stopped by to visit her in the hospital. “What else could go wrong?!” Pam stated. I replied, “You are still here for a reason,” trying to provide words of encouragement to keep her strong.

This young lady is truly unique to me because she not only continued to come to work with a smile on her face, she continued provide excellent customer service to our guests and team members. Pam definitely shows ownership and excellence in her role as part of our company and is truly a unique individual.

Ameristar East Chicago volunteers gathered Sunday, September 15, to participate in the city of East

Chicago’s annual Mexican Independence Parade and Festival. In the spirit of diversity, volunteers took part in this rich cultural event to show their support to the East Chicago community.

Nearly 20 volunteers and their families rode the Ameristar float and tossed more than 6,000 pieces of candy to eager children and adults viewing the parade. Richard Ortega helped to keep the rain away by providing Mexican hats, flags and extra candy to our volunteers.

Ameristar East Chicago is an annual sponsor of the Mexican Day Parade and Festival in East Chicago. Hosted by Union Benefica Mexicana (U.B.M.), the two-day event helps to commemorate Mexican Independence Day and is one of the largest celebrations in the city.

“We sincerely appreciate the support of Ameristar each year as we come together to celebrate our cultural roots,” stated Tony Barreda, U.B.M. president. “It was a great day for our community.”

CARVING GURU Hieu Bui

Many would consider Room Service Lead Cook, Hieu Bui, a carving guru. She is asked to carve food for numerous internal and external events

and never ceases to amaze people with her unique talent.  Hieu says her love of carving began when she was in the military. “I would watch the Senior Chief carve and I thought ‘That’s so cool.’ The Senior Chief eventually bought me a carving knife set, and I took off from there!” Hieu is currently enrolled at the Louisiana Culinary Institute, and will graduate in February of 2014.  Even through balancing school, work and serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, she continues to impress those around her. Over the summer, Sous Chef Richard Lipton submitted a letter about Hieu that was featured in one of Anthony’s Magical and Memorable Moments. Her work continues to be featured at team member events and has become a favorite among several guests.  She remains diligent in perfecting her craft and looks forward to a long career with Pinnacle.

HISPANIC CULTUREGuadalupe (Lupe) Calderon

A small child can hardly sleep waiting the morning when she will find a gift and candy under her bed. This

exciting tradition is part of the Dia de Los Reyes celebrated by many in the Hispanic culture on January 6 each year. Guadalupe (Lupe) Calderon, HR Recruiter at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City, celebrates this holiday each year with her family.

“Many families get together to eat and celebrate with each other. My family members also enjoy our celebration with Rosca de Reye (King’s bread), which is a loaf of bread that has plastic figures inside.” Hispanic families who celebrate with this bread cut into it. Depending on what plastic figure you find, it has significant meaning. For example, one item represents that marriage will be approaching for that person soon.

Paola Perez’s bright smile and sultry accent are a welcome addition to L’Auberge Lake Charles. Originally from

Bucaramanga (try saying that five times!), Colombia, she is now working as the Human Resources Clerk.

Paola came to the United States in the fall of 2010 to study at McNeese State University in Lake Charles. She was already a little knowledgeable about the area because her older brother had already left Colombia to study at McNeese. “I used to study at an American high school, so I knew I wanted to come to the United States.”

Her major is Management with a concentration in Human Resources and a minor in Psychology and she will graduate in May 2014. After graduation, Paola wants to “stay here and work, then eventually go to grad school.”

Paola’s experience at L’Auberge started over the summer when she was chosen as an HR intern. And now she serves as an HR clerk with job duties such as assisting with documentation, system inputting, NHO prep and continual internal guest serves to the team members. Anthony Iannone, HR talent manager, says this is “ just the beginning of Paola’s long, successful HR career path.”

“The best thing about being at L’Auberge and in the south is that the people here are always happy, with smiles on their faces. And my job is never boring.” Challenges at work are part of the reason she stays interested and loves her job. “Working here is my first job. I thought it would be serious. I’m surprised we have so much fun while working.”

When asked what she misses most about home, Paola says her family and their traditions are very special. “In my family, we had breakfast, lunch and dinner together and we would discuss the day. It’s a change to be here because I am becoming more independent.” That said, she visits home once a year and her parents visit her once a year.

In October, PNK team members showed their support for ending the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink,

celebrating life and raising money for the cause. Across the United States, our 15,000 team members showed their support while having a little bit of fun.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, team members from Bon Temps Buffet planned a surprise party for fellow team member and breast cancer survivor, Rosetta Lee. Rosetta, who is an inspiration to many of her team members, was touched by the heartfelt gesture. With tears in her eyes she said, “This was so thoughtful; I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.”

L’Auberge Baton Rouge team members proudly showed their support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink for the annual “Think Pink Celebration.” Members of the executive team wore pink mustaches and “Real Men Wear Pink” aprons, while serving team members cake and punch. Educational literature, pink wrist bands, as well as delicious think pink snacks were provided to team members. During the month of October, the building signs on the L’Auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge tower are lit up bright pink in a visual show of support for breast cancer awareness.

The Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer Walk in Lake Charles, Louisiana, raises money for those affected by breast cancer in the local community. Showing their support, 350 L’Auberge team members and their family members participated in the walk. The Pinnacle Entertainment Foundation also gave $10,000 to support the cause.

Team Members showed their support at their local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Ameristar was the platinum sponsor of the Susan G. Komen luncheon held at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

A True Testament of our Value Care

LB Douglas (Landmark Buffet Cook) met a guest who shared she was going through treatment for breast cancer. LB understood what she was going through because he had lost his grandmother and sister to breast cancer and told her to keep hope. Finally the guest received great news that her cancer was all gone and LB invited her to attend the Komen Walk for the Cure with Ameristar. The guest felt she would be unable to make the long walk and all of her children lived out of state. As a surprise gift to her, LB and his kids walked for the guest. He surprised her with a frame full of photos from the walk as well as a hat and a survivor name tag he had worn in her honor. The guest was very emotional and shared this gift with everyone in the restaurant. She called LB her angel and stated, “This was the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for me.”

River City team members showed their support by wearing pink and enjoying treats in the Team Member Dining Room.

The Las Vegas Service Center team members raised $8,915 to help end the fight against breast cancer. Funds were raised by selling PNK in PiNK t-shirts and by participating in the local Making Strides of Las Vegas walk. The Pinnacle Entertainment Foundation also donated $5,000 to the cause.

Dear Fellow PNK Team Members,  Veterans Day – a very special day where we pause to remember the brave men and women who have served in our Armed Forces. We honor those who risked their lives and, in some cases, lost their lives serving our country. Many of our fellow PNK team members are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces. In recognition of their service and to honor them, each of our PNK properties displayed photos of team members in the heart-of-house on Veterans Day. We are also proud to share photos of our veterans in this issue of our magazine and online at www.pinnaclepipeline.com/veterans-day. We also honored our guests on Veterans Day by offering complimentary meals at our buffets and select restaurants for veterans and active duty military personnel. Thank you to all of our team members who have served. We are fortunate to have you working alongside us to make Pinnacle Entertainment the Best Casino Entertainment Company in the World.  All the best,

Serving Those Who Served

Freedom Calls Foundations Connects Dad and DaughterFrank Green, Surveillance Technician at River City Casino & Hotel, was on active duty in Iraq when his wife gave birth to their daughter. Thanks to the Freedom Calls Foundation, Frank was able to meet his daughter via teleconferencing networks provided by the organization. His daughter arrived at 6 a.m. and by 2 p.m. that day, she was meeting her father. Frank and his family are forever grateful to the Freedom Calls Foundation.

This Veterans Day, we honored veterans and active duty military personnel by offering complimentary meals at our award-winning buffets and selected restaurants. We served almost 5,000 veterans who chose to spend their special day with us. Team Members across the country spent time with our veterans to show their appreciation for their service.

By: Martina Malone Internal Communications SpecialistL’Auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge ART OF MODELING

C’era Washington

Growing up, C’era Washington looked quite different from her relatives. This made her feel like an

outsider; “A lot of people would tell me I looked different from my family because of my darker complexion. It really affected the way I viewed myself. Years later I began modeling and I found that it really helped me build my self-confidence.” C’era, who works as a Valet Attendant and a Hostess in Stadium, modeled for the first time when she decided to participate in a fashion show while in high school. Since then, she’s been busy building her modeling portfolio. Thus far, she’s worked on a sunglass campaign for Midas and Moros, and has modeled in New York Fashion Week.

Her favorite modeling job was a photo shoot with celebrity photographer, Scott Hebert, who has worked with superstars such as Tyler Perry and Forrest Whitaker. In the artsy photo shoot with Scott, C’era said, “I was covered in oil and I had to pose on top of a table. It was kind of tricky, but I had a lot of fun. Plus my skin felt amazing afterwards!” Ultimately, C’era would like to model in an Alexander McQueen show; “I love avant-garde designed clothes. Walking in his show would be a dream come true.” When C’era is not busy flying to New York or Los Angeles to model, she¹s at home sketching or reading a suspense book. She said, “I’m kind of a nerd! I have hundreds of books in my apartment. I love to read, especially Steven King suspense books.”

With more than 10 different languages spoken at Cactus Petes and the Horseshu, we could be

considered the cultural melting pot of Northern Nevada. There’s no doubt that language barriers can present operational challenges. However, for our team members those challenges are turned into department successes. Diversity is not only encouraged at Cactus Petes, it’s celebrated! Team members Ajnija (Lilly) Lilic, who works in EVS, and Salko Lilic, who works in Security, are mother and son and terrific examples of our diverse workforce. Originally from Zenica, Bosnia, the Lilic family moved to Twin Falls 12 years ago. Lilly has worked for Cactus Petes for more than 11 years in the EVS department. “My favorite thing about working here is the great respect everyone has for each other,” said Lilly. “When language becomes a barrier, we find other ways to communicate and always get the job done.” Lilly encouraged her son to work for Cactus Petes too, because he is a student and she knew that, whatever department he worked in, they would work around his college schedule.

Salko Lilic started in September in the Security department. In the short time he has worked here, he too appreciates our diverse culture and tremendous focus on guest service. “I enjoy the positive atmosphere at Cactus Petes and how everyone works together,” said Salko. A graduate of the College of Southern Idaho with an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement, Salko is currently in the process of obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Boise State University. “With many of our team members coming from other countries, I think we can learn a lot from each other.”

Jenn Zelenka, Ameristar Council Bluffs Director of Surveillance, has her eye on the ball – literally. For the

past five years, she has been a dominate force for Omaha’s professional women’s football team. While working out at her local gym, Jenn noticed a flyer that invited women to try out for the inaugural football season. With the encouragement from her trainer and the love for sports and football, she decided to give it a shot. Jenn’s team practices and conditions three to four times a week and travels the country to play the more than 45 teams in her league. “Some of these women have played football for 10 years,” stated Jenn. “They truly inspire me and the love for the game grows each season.” The team also gives back to the community. They have volunteered and raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and also adopt a family in need during the holidays.

When you think of Christmas, you think of the city illuminated in lights and decorations, the smell

of hot apple cider and gingerbread, and decorating the family’s Christmas tree. Most of all though, when you think of Christmas, you think of Santa Claus. Joseph Catanese, (known at Boomtown Bossier as “Joe Cat”) has gotten into the Christmas spirit by dressing up as Santa for the past 13 years. Every single year he puts on his red suit and attends the Team Member Christmas party to take pictures with the children of our team members. He has seen these children grow up over the years, and it brings him extreme happiness to be a part of this joyful tradition. The kids all look forward to seeing “Santa” each year. To them, it isn’t Christmas without Santa.

SUPERIOR SERVICETHROUGH SIGNINGLeErica Knight

LeErica Knight is a cashier/runner in Bella’s restaurant. LeErica has learned the gift of sign language out of necessity to communicate with

her hearing impaired sibling. To our surprise, this gift has helped us provide fabled guest service in Bella’s. We have a couple who are hearing impaired and eat at Bella’s regularly. Typically they must write down their order for the cashier to understand them. One day, LeErica was working the register and she immediately began talking to them in sign language and took their order with ease. As you can imagine, the guests were thrilled. LeErica has helped Bella’s provide another level of guest service.

CELEBRATING THE ALL SAINTS DAY Janet Brown

Janet Brown is from the Philippines. In the United States, it is not common for a cemetery celebration on All Saints Day. However, when in the

Philippines, Janet and her family gather at the cemetery every November 1st to celebrate the lives of their lost loved ones. The cemeteries are always packed full of families celebrating. They begin early in the day with the entire family gathered and celebrate with guitars and singing. As the day progresses, they continue singing and talking about the memories of those that went before them. They celebrate well into the night – lighting candles and even having dinner in the cemetery. The Barrio Fiesta celebrates San Miguel (Saint Michael). Saint Michael is the patron saint of her hometown San Miguel Calumpit Bulacan. They celebrate continuously for two days in May. Visitors from all over the Philippines come to watch the procession of San Miguel and the boat races on the river.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that can’t be more true for Angel Espino. Three years

ago, Angel saw his first Van Gogh painting and was inspired to create his own masterpieces. Today, he paints abstract expressionism art and is blessed to be able to help his community by donating paintings to charitable auctions, and a percentage of his sales to multiple charities.

When Angel applied for his Master of Fine Arts degree he remembered the words his eighth grade teacher often told him, dream big and pursue your goals. A passion for art allows Angel to express the beauty that surrounds us as well as helping his community at the same time.

On August 3, 2013, Sarah Ortegon, Ameristar Casino Resort Spa Poker Cashier, was crowned Miss Native

American, U.S.A. where she competed against nine Native American women from across the nation. During the competition, Sarah showcased her talents in art and performed a cultural healing dance called the Jingle. After graduating Metropolitan State University of Denver, she wanted to be a positive influence in her community and the pageant was her first opportunity to step out of her comfort zone and reach her goal. Art has been a big part of Sarah’s life and most recently she began introducing bead work to her creations. The beads offer an arrangement of visual elements that compliment her black and white paintings and highlight her true talent. In addition to painting, four years ago Sarah began dancing in Pow Wows where she learned the Jingle dance and now competes with other dancers. Since being crowned Miss Native American, U.S.A, Sarah has given several motivational speeches and will begin showing her art in Denver, Colo., and Wyoming. She also plans to travel to Europe to dance with the Larry Yazzie Native Pride Dancers.

During the basketball season, you can find Dale Clay on the court coaching a group of vibrant 8- and 12-years-old girls. The Facilities Engineer and his

wife, Lamitra, began a basketball team called the Lady Chargers in 2012. Their team is comprised of young girls from their neighborhood who are looking for something fun and productive to do after school. Dale and his wife spend 15 to 20 hours a week helping the girls advance their basketball skills in preparation for upcoming games. When they aren’t busy coaching, they are diligently working to raise money for the basketball team through various fundraisers. Not wanting to burden the children’s parents financially, Dale selflessly used the prize money he received as the third quarter Community Service winner to purchase t-shirts for his team¹s upcoming season. Dale wants the best for his team and has high expectations for their future.  Dale says, “My goal is to help them continue to develop their basketball skills, graduate from high school and go on to college with basketball scholarships.” Dale is a true testament to what giving back is all about!

Recognized as Boomtown Bossier’s Team Member of the Quarter for Quarter 3 in community service,

Angie Mason is the epitome of what a true volunteer should be. She gives her time and effort fully and selflessly to each project in which she is involved. “Volunteering is something for everyone to do, you just have to find your passion,” Angie says. Recently, she organized a fundraiser for school supplies and uniforms at her church which was a huge success. Over two consecutive Sundays, she collected more than 150 school uniforms for less fortunate youth in need of assistance. She also makes it abundantly clear that she does not volunteer for accolades or recognition, but from her heart.

Angie first began volunteering with hospice patients many years ago. She gave each of her patients an angel as a symbol of her love and encouragement. Her face beamed when she told me she had learned that one of her patients would sleep with the angel in their hand each night. “That is the real reason that I volunteer,” she says, “knowing in my heart that I have made a difference.”

Recalling her father with a smile and saying, “He always told me to me to ‘put love on layaway’, that way it will always be there when you need it.” Since his death in 2001, each year Angie and her family have put together a gift basket full of food to donate to Willis Knighton in his honor. They celebrate his life by enriching the lives of others. Not just that day, but every day. Angie is a shining example of what it means to “Pay it Forward.”

This year, Geoff Goodman, Chief Integration Officer, celebrated a once-in-a-lifetime holiday hybrid –

Thanksgivukkah. For the first time in over a century, Thanksgiving coincided with the first day of Hanukkah making for a day of food, festivities and fun! Geoff along with his fiancée Jessica Leslie, and their two dogs Reggie and Lexi enjoyed a short break from their busy schedules to celebrate the holiday. Each year during Hanukkah, they light a menorah which is a nine-branched candelabrum that is lit over the eight nights of the holiday. Similar to Thanksgiving, Geoff and his family enjoy a feast of traditional fare, including latkas (potato pancakes) and beef brisket, on the first and last night of Hanukkah. Thanksgivukkah was a once-in-a-lifetime holiday that will not return for another 70,000 years! The dates of Hanukkah vary each year and are determined by the luniosloar Hebrew calendar. Good news for Geoff and Jessica is that Christmas comes several weeks later making for yet another reason to celebrate this year! L’Chaim to Thanksgivukkah!

Darrell Johnson has been acting for roughly nine years. He found his interest during a high school debate team activity. His teacher praised

him for a job well-done and he was hooked. He was an extra in The Guardian, the HBO series “Treme” and performed in the theatrical plays, “ The Colored Museum” and “South Pacific.” He recently auditioned for an Improv Troupe called Sketchy Comedy. When he is not keeping Boomtown safe and lighting up the stage, Darrel enjoys martial arts. He took up training while in Korea with the military but for the last year he has been dedicated to Krav Maga. Other martial arts involve technique and form; Krav Maga is reality based without rules and focuses on simple self-protection. Not only does Krav Maga teach physical protection, it strengthens the spirit and develops the ability to deal with violent confrontations under intense stress.
