    A VALENTINE TALE ...The tradition of St Valentine's Day goes right bacthe Ancient Romans - when it was just one of mlove feasts celebrated during February. At these,and boys used to draw lots to decide which of themwould "keep company" (going steady, we'd call it!during the year. Girls' names were put in a box,shaken up, and then each boy in turn pulled out aname - and won his girl!Itbecame St Valentine'sDay much later when it was dedicated to SaintValentine - not because he had any connection wyoung love - but because his feast happened to fin mid-February, just when the feasts were at theiheight. The Romans introduced the custom to Briand it's been with us ever since, the sending of caand verses being introduced sometime in themid-nineteenth century.

    Going after a job can bepretty scary. It's easyenough to write a letter ofapplication, but when youget invited along for aninterview you start getting astomach ulcer, nervoustwitches and a strong feelingthat the people conductingthe interview are going tofall about laughing whenthey see you. In fact, I didgo for a job interview onceand they did fall aboutlaughing when they saw me.It was partly my own fault, 1suppose. I did exaggerate alittle when I applied for thejob. Like saying 1 was sixfeet four inches tall and hadbeen a big game hunter inAfrica for ten years. At thetime, I was fourteen, shortand spotty. But I didn'treally want the job anyway.It's probably a boring life,being a lion Willer.I've learned a lot aboutinterviews and my wide'knowledge is available toyou absolutely-free ofcharge.You may find, when youturn up for a job, that thereare two, three or even threedozen other people alsowaiting to convince theinterviewers that they areright for the job. Somehow,you've got to be the onewho's remembered.You could turn upwearing yellow lipstick andfour inch eyelashes. Youcould arrive by parachute,leading a tiger on a goldenchain or wearing a hat with

    S :=

    ~.~

    ~Q,"I'MTHEGm YOUWANT" on it. You'll beremembered all right, butthere's a fair chance' youwon't get the job.The secret is to convincethe interviewer that you cando the job and that youreally want it. So try not toyawn too often during theinterview. Look sincere.Don't fall off yourchair, Saysomething to soften theirhard hearts. ''When Grandaddied," you can say.with acatch in your voice, "his lastwords to me were that hehoped one day I'd achievemy ambition to become abottle top screwer-onner atyour factory. I can hardlybelieve it's almosthappened." Even thetoughest interviewer willfind it difficult to turn youdown after that.It's also a good idea toarrive for your interviewslightly late and slightlybreathless. "1 was on holidayin the Outer Hebrides," yougasp, "but I wouldn't missthe chance of a job withyou, so I came straightback!"The important thing is to.Keep your cool. Don't get hotand flustered. Before theinte.rview,eat a bucket of icecubes. Then stick to theJamie system and the jobwill be yours. I just wishsomeone had been around togive me advice when Istarted applying for jobs. Imight have been a prettyfamous lion tamer by now.
