PINK SHIRT DAY: FRIDAY MAY 26

Pink Shirt Day is this Friday 26 May and we are hoping

that students will embrace this day by wearing a pink

top, t-shirt and /or accessories (e.g a wig!). Please do

not buy anything for this day!

What is it? Pink Shirt Day Aotearoa is a national

initiative led by the Mental Health Foundation of

New Zealand aimed at generating discussion and

education to combat bullying. Pink Shirt Day is about

working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity

and promoting positive social relationships.

Key Idea: Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying.

What does Speak up. Stand together. Stop bullying mean?

Speak up

Giving voice to a problem is the first step towards addressing it. Having

conversations with your friends, family, whānau, children, parents, teachers,

students and wider communities is a great way to come up with ideas and

strategies to address bullying. Speaking up is also about asking for help when

you need it. This can be scary, and sometimes the first person you ask can’t or

won’t do anything to help you. Keep asking. Pink Shirt Day shows there are

many people who care about supporting you.

Stand together

Bullying behaviour is influenced by the actions and values of friends, families

and whānau, schools, workplaces and whole communities. Real change

happens when we stand together, sending a strong message that there is no

place for bullying in New Zealand. Bullying often makes people feel alone, but

Pink Shirt Day shows that many people care. Many people want to play their

part in making New Zealand a safe, welcoming and respectful place for

everyone, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or

cultural background.

Stop bullying

On Pink Shirt Day, look out on the sea of pink and know that together we can

stop bullying.

School Closed

The school is closed on Friday 2 June and Monday 5 June 2017.

For reasons of the closure on 2 June, please see page three.

Farewell and Thank You to Nikki Urlich

There is an amendment to the notice in the newsletter last week regarding the

farewell to Nikki Urlich.

This will take the form of a farewell and thank you school assembly to be held at

11.00am on Thursday 1 June in the school hall.

Members of our school community are most welcome to attend.

Mathlete of the Week

Congratulations to Chloe Seo from Room 5Silver.

You are Mathlete of the week!

The Mathlete of the week is the top student in the school who

has mastered the most concepts in Mathletics.

Field Closed

The field remains closed because of maintenance work in the holidays.

That’s the bad news. The good news is the contractor has advised us we could

consider opening the field or part there-of later next week.

Hence, if you are interested in the status of the field please check the newsletter

next week.

Police Vetting: Urgent &

Important!

Only adults who have had a

police vet will be able to help with

school activities from January

2017 onwards.

As obtaining a police vet takes

time, if you are considering being

available to help with school

activities in any way in 2017

please act now, as follows......

Please go to the school website

to ‘Police Vetting for Volunteers

at CBS’ under Parent Information

and complete the form and

attach photocopies as per the

instructions.

Please note a police vet remains

current for three years after the

date of issue by the police.

Absences

Just a reminder that if your child

is going to be absent from

school, we request you advise

the school office before 9am, not

just the class teacher.

Email:

[email protected],

use the Flexibuzz App or

call 410 9551.

For extended holidays ie: more

than one day, a request should

be made to Mr McGowan for the

time off. These requests can be

emailed to:

[email protected].

This is a Ministry of Education

requirement.

We work very hard at keeping

your children safe at school and

appreciate your assistance with

our process.

Reasons for School Closure

The school is closed for instruction on Friday 2 June. Last week I received an

email from a parent asking why the school was to be closed for teacher

professional development in term time. Good question and one I should have

been proactive in answering last week. Therefore, later rather than sooner, here

is the explanation for the closure on Friday 2 June. No need to explain the

closure on Monday 5 June!

Each year the Ministry of Education establishes the number of days each

state school must be open for instruction. While there are some limits

established in terms of when schools can and cannot be open, such as the

earliest/latest dates a school can start the school year and finish the year,

plus when the term holidays must be taken, there is flexibility afforded to the

Board of Trustees when it comes to determining opening dates bearing in

mind the Board must ensure the school is open for the required number of

days each year. This is non negotiable.

This year a teacher only professional development day is being held on 2

June to enable all schools from CBS to Browns Bay, including the

intermediate but excluding Rangitoto College, to get together to learn from

each other and from outside speakers with the aim of improving our teaching

of students who are not achieving in accordance with national standards. This

is part of the Community of Learners our school is part of.

As a school we endeavour to complete all school-wide professional

development out of class contact time. An example of this are the professional

development days we have each January before school starts as well as

weekly professional development meetings when students have gone home.

Many teachers participate in professional development in the holidays. In the

recent holidays over ten teachers attended a two day maths course and in the

up coming holidays we have eight teachers attending a professional

development course on improving the effectiveness of classroom teaching. A

number of our teachers are engaged in on-going post graduate programmes

of study that require attendance in school holidays.

Having written this, teaching is a demanding profession and teachers need

most of their holidays; hence we do our best to ensure teachers have a well-

deserved break while also meeting important professional development

needs.

We do our best to keep any disruptions to parental routines to a minimum. For

example, on ‘parent-teacher’ interviews days we do not close the school early

but, rather, we supervise students until 3.00 pm. Next year, in an attempt to

improve the start of the year, we are having ‘getting to know you’ interviews

near the end of the January holidays. The date for this has already been

published: Thursday 25 January 2018. This date has been selected so it will

not interfere with term time.

In summary, we are meeting the requirement to be open on the required

number of days while also engaging in timely and necessary professional

development being mindful we keep any disruptions to parents atoa minimum.

That is why Friday 2 June has been selected for this professional development

as it affords an opportunity for families to have a four day rather than a three

day long weekend.

CBS WEEKLY NEWS

ROUND UP

Each week the students of

Campbells Bay School create a

show called CBS WEEKLY

NEWS ROUND UP.

This highlights all the cool things

happening at CBS for the week.

It is available for viewing on the

school Ultranet page. You child

must be signed into their google

CBS primary account to view.

Get your kids to show you how to

do this.

Happy viewing.

Library Lovers

If you have a bit of spare time we

would love to have your help in

our library.

All volunteers will need to be

police vetted so a regular

commitment would be

appreciated.

We do have small jobs like

covering books that could be

taken home.

Please email me if you can help.

APPA Music Festival Choir 2017

The Auckland Primary Principals’ Association (APPA) Festival takes place in the Town

Hall in November each year. This is a huge event which incorporates choirs from the

greater Auckland region.

The APPA choir is for students who really enjoy music, who want to develop their

voices and learn to sing in parts. While Year 6 will be given priority for this choir Year 5

students will be invited to audition should we be short of numbers.

Although the festival does not take place until November preparations are underway and auditions will take place soon.

Our first introductory rehearsal with Marian Burns, our director, takes place at CBS on Tuesday 6 June.

I realise that many students are currently involved in the Mid Bays Festival Choir and for that reason further in-school

rehearsals will be delayed until we have staged that event.

All announcements and reminders re.auditions will be made via cbtv so please remind your child to keep a look out

should they be interested.

This festival has become a highlight in our musical calendar and I know your children are going to love being part of it!

Missing Scooter

Jai Hunt Room 18 has not been able to find his scooter since last Thursday.

It was last seen in the bike rack and had Jai’s name on it ‘Jai Hunt’ in a few places. His

spiderman helmet was with it too. It is a micro scooter in Sapphire blue.

If this scooter has accidentally turned up at your house or you know where it may be,

please return it to the scooter rack or contact the school office.

Many thanks.

‘Not Self But Service’

Auckland City Mission’s ‘One Can – Two Can’

CBS will be taking part in this Appeal from Monday 12 June – Friday 23 June and we are asking families to get behind

this wonderful local cause.

‘One Can – Two Can’ is a huge part of the Auckland City Mission’s Winter Appeal and they rely heavily on donations they

receive from schools. Even a gold coin, or a single can, provides vital support and nutrition to a family in crisis.

Please support this community initiative by providing a can of food, or funds to cover the cost of a can, that your child can

bring to school during this time.

Further information on this or the Mission’s work in general can be found by contacting Mackenzie Koppel on 303 9261,

or by visiting the Mission’s website: www.aucklandcitymission.org.nz

Book Week 2017 will be held from Monday 27 November to Friday 1 December.

This year we want Book Week to be the best yet and the Book Week Committee is working hard to secure some amazing

and talented authors/artists to inspire, enthral and entertain us during Book Week.

This year we are seeking donations to sponsor author visits which will help us secure even more authors/artists. Author

expenses range from $250 for a full day visit to over $1,000!!

There are two options for donation sponsorship:

1. A donation of $100, $250 or $500 to go towards the overall author visits,

or

2. Donation towards a particular author visit. If you are interested in this option then please contact Tash Bartlett for a list

of authors to choose from.

If you, your family or a local business you know of would like to provide a donation for Book Week then please contact

Tash Bartlett at [email protected]. All donators will be acknowledged throughout the year in Book Week

communication.

PLEASE HELP US MAKE THE 2017 BOOK WEEK THE BEST YET!

Book Week is very excited to welcome Archibald & Shorter as our first sponsor of Book Week.

Archibald & Shorter are proud to support the visit of the dynamic and dangerous Peter Millett, author of Johnny Danger

DIY Spy, Boy Zero Wannabe Hero and many other fabulous books. http://www.petermillettbooks.com/4401.html

The support of Archibald & Shorter is greatly appreciated as we look to make Book Week 2017 the best yet!

Swim Team make it three in a row!

At the end of last Term our CBS Swim team competed in the North Shore Primary Schools’ Swim Competition at the

National Aquatic Centre at AUT Millennium. Twenty three primary schools from across the North Shore competed in this

swim meet. We took thirty six swimmers from year three to year six. All our swimmers were exceptionally focused and

gave their very best both in and out of the pool. CBS were the defending champions from both 2016 and 2015. All our

swimmers contributed towards our accumulated points helping us towards taking out the title of top school for the third

year running. This is quite an achievement! Thank you to all the supporters who came along on the day to cheer for us. A

big thank you too, to all the parent helpers who gave up their time to take on a duty role as part of the smooth running of

the event.

The overall points for the top three schools were as follows:
