• Listen to the bird calls at 0:00-0:49 (the calls are similar “bird sounds” of the B section in the musical excerpt
• Have the class imitate bird sounds using vocal explorations
• Discuss how the bird’s beak opens wider as the sounds get louder
• Show picture of crescendo symbol and discuss that the symbol in music means to get louder. Students can think of it like the beak of the bird opening.

• Divide the class into two student groups - one is the Bird group, one is the Kings & Queens group
• Listen to the excerpt of Gli Uccelli. During the “A” section, have the Kings & Queens group walk around like they are walking very proudly in their garden to the steady beat (assess)
• During the “B” seciton, the Kings & Queens “look with your binoculars at the birds changing directions when you hear a bird sound in the music”. (assess) The Bird group plays along by looking at the Kings & Queens, Birds bob their heads and flap their wings.
• Interlude back to the “A” section - birds flutter and fly back to the tops of the trees
• Return of the “A” seciton - Kings & Queens walk home to the steady beat. (assess)
