ON THE PINECONE COVER
Merry Christmas everyone! The spirit of the holidays cannot be missed at Kirby Pines. Beginning with the live sixteen foot tree in the main lobby, to the carolers performing weekly, the spirit of the season is alive throughout the community.
The activity department has planned a variety of events for your enjoyment throughout this holiday season. So be sure to mark on your Pinecone Calendar all of the events you want to attend. Providing many of these events are fellow resident volunteers. It’s hard to imagine Christmas without the love and care of volunteers. In addition to events, resident volunteers assist with the massive task of decorating throughout and even delivering packages. Well, maybe a group of Santa’s elves could do the job, but Memphis is a long way from the North Pole. Many other residents are volunteering their time to assist others in the community. Some are busy here in our nursing home, assisted living and Alzheimer’s areas, and others at area hospitals, schools and centers. No matter where they choose to volunteer, the spirit of Christmas is evident in their good works.
Of course, it would not be a holiday season without some extra treats from Kirby’s dietary department. Can you imagine coming to work each day, and having to bake cookies over and over
The Most Wonderful Time of the Yeara t K i r b y P i n e s
again, or making egg nog or hot cider just one more time? Well, this is just the kind of added daily activity that occurs in the kitchen during the holiday season at Kirby Pines, along with meal preparations for the hundreds of residents that live here. Just the same, these employees find time to relax and enjoy the spirit of Christmas that abounds throughout the community. By the way, if you have not made plans for Christmas Eve or Day, think about joining us for a delicious meal served in our dining room these days. I am sure you will find the meal delightful and the warmth of friendships comforting.
The decorations certainly add to the excitement of the season, but let us not forget that this holiday celebrates the birth of Christ. His life and teachings are the basis for the values incorporated into our mission statement. It is with this in mind, that I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas, and welcome the prospect of serving you in the year to come.

Carol White moved to Kirby Pines from her previous home in Fox Meadows, here in Memphis, Tennessee. She has three children and six grandchildren. She was married for 54 years and was primarily a homemaker. However, she also worked outside her home for 10 years at the Cole Publishing Company as an Office Manager.
Classical music is her favorite; and France is the one country she would like to visit, given that country’s rich history. The most valuable lesson she learned from her parents was trust in God. Becoming a mother was her most meaningful life event.
Carol continues to familiarize herself with all that Kirby Pines offers and enjoys the friendliness of long time residents. We welcome Carol to our community and wish her all the best.

Carol WhiteAnna Stewart
Anna Stewart has lived in Memphis for 44 years, coming to Kirby Pines from her previous residence on Chapman Avenue. She and her husband, Ralph, celebrated 57+ years before his passing. During WWII, Ralph Stewart was an MP, serving as General Eisenhower’s inside security guard for nearly 4 years. They have 2 children, 2 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. In 1945, Anna pursued a business course at Miller Hawkins Business College, and worked for several years at E.H. Crump & Company as an Insurance Writer.
The most valuable gift from her parents was being brought up in a Christian home. Anna has put her faith into action by teaching Sunday school for 69 years. Among her memories that make her smile is a Mediterranean Cruise that included several days in Israel; a cruise from the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal to the Atlantic Ocean; and accidentally going into the men’s restroom in England.
As a high school teenager, she played basketball at Bells, TN and believes her team must have been good because they never lost a game and were in the finals.
At this phase of her life, Anna says that she’s satisfied to stay home, because she has been blessed by the places visited. A sunny ALL IS WELL !!! is included in her bio and her positive outlook is a welcomed attribute here at Kirby Pines.
Charlese Tolar
Charlese Tolar, former mortgage banker, recently joined the Kirby Pines Retirement Community. She has three children, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Special heirlooms include framed pictures of her Great, Great, Great Grandparents – he being one of the founders of Memphis. The most valuable behavioral traits gained from her parents are honesty and independence. Meaningful life events as an adult include the birth of her children and marriage to Reginald Tolar. Reginald served in the Navy before matriculating at Ole Miss University and earning a BS Degree in Business. He then joined the Air Force Reserve, retiring after 20 years as a Lt. Colonel.
Charlese attended the University of Missouri and was a Loan Officer with the James E. McGehee Company, for 10 years. Especially prized are her terms of service as Former President, Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association; Episcopal Church Women; and 1985 Realtor Affiliate Member of the Year.
Her interests include reading, crossword puzzles, and bridge. Favorite music are songs of the 40’s and 50’s. Charlese has traveled the U.S. as well as Europe, Caribbean, and China.
Charlese, we’re pleased that you are one of us; and there are many ways you can contribute to our community. We wish you all the best for the years ahead.

Don’t let the business of the holidays steal the progress you have made this year in your strengthening exercise program. With special parties and a full schedule of events, remember to schedule some time for the Oasis and/or your favorites exercise class. Bring your family with you to the warm pool. Take walks with the kids around the lake or show them all the wonderful decorations around the halls of Kirby Pines. Christmas can be hectic and overwhelming, but a good walk outside can bring some peace and quiet, solitude and retrospect. Take the time to unwrap the gift of comfort and joy as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.
Come join us for a Christmas Stroll through the beautifully decorated halls of Kirby on Monday, December 15. This “Walk with Ease” Class Reunion will meet in the Small Card Room at 10:30 to do our warm-up and stretches, walk for about 30 minutes and then gather back in the SCR for some Christmas treats. Invite your friends to join in on this fun event.

Make your New Year’s resolution to include signing up for the Walk across America Program that Oasis will be offering in January. Participants
may begin registering January 5, 2013. The program will run from January 12 through March 9 and will last 8 weeks. We will keep track of how many miles each participant walks, or completes on the Nu-Step or treadmill on their own time schedule. If you use your pedometer, on average, 2000 steps equals one mile. Everyone’s mileage will be kept up individually and as a
group total to see how far we can walk; pointing out interesting landmarks along the way. Last year as a group we walked all the way from the Golden Gate Bridge to the front door of Kirby Pines for a total of 2125 miles. This year we will start in Maine and travel the old US Highway 1 which will take us to every major city on the East Coast. If we have enough participants, we could make it all the way to Key West. Make plans to join our Walk across America Program
in 2015. We’ll have helpful tips each week, awards and surprises for everyone, as well as the reward of beginning and continuing a great exercise habit of walking for strength and endurance. We will have
weekly door prizes and a Grand Prize at the end for the most miles.

Exercise Your Brain to Improve
COGN IT ION
Are you
constantly forgetting
where you put your glasses or
keys? Do you agree that without
your daily planner you would feel lost
and miss many scheduled events? If the answer is yes,
don’t fret, you are not alone; this is a normal part of the
aging process.
Your brain is actually responsible for every
emotion, thought, and behavior. Believe it
or not, your brain is made up of 60% fat; it
is actually the fattiest system in your whole body. This
fact is a perfect example as to why it is vital that you
consume healthy fats on a regular basis.
As we age, our brains do, too; that is why it is
extremely important that we are constantly
exercising our brains over our lifespan.
Throughout life, it is important to expose your brain
to enriched environments
so that your brain will
produce new cells.
Having increased
cellular connections
is what helps delay
the aging process of
your brain.
Please join us in the PAC at 10:00AM on Monday, December
15th to discuss how aging affects our memory and also to learn
great tips to keep your brain as sharp as a tack. Contact Allyson
Boykin for more information at (901)-229-8396.

A life that emphasizes service to others and which is coupled with leadership qualities is a basic picture of Rebecca (Becky)Wheat Leatherwood. She attended Bethel College for 3 years until she married the love of her life, Lynn Leatherwood. Lynn developed the Biomedical Engineering Department for Methodist Health Systems and was a Fellow in the Hospital Engineering Group. Becky worked at the IRS as a seasonal Tax Examiner and at Union Planters Bank’s Public Relations Department. They had 2 daughters and life was good. But major heart-rending changes loomed. Becky was diagnosed with Multiple Scoliosis (MS) in 1991 and Lynn passed away in 1996. She was confident that dedicating her life to a church-based ministry would be her path, undeterred by physical limitations of MS.
“The best way to find yourselfis to lose yourself
in the service of others”. ― Mahatma Gandhi
Becky’s faith is strong and includes a literal interpretation of James 2:26 that “faith without works is dead”. Her voluntary work is her stewardship of the Grace of God in her life. Her early efforts included teaching Sunday school to first graders and holding many offices in the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Other well-earned recognition include a 1984 award as the Hospice Volunteer of the year from Home Health & Hospice Services of Memphis, Inc.; a 1985 Certificate Of Service as a Member of the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary Board; and 2001 recognition of her contributions to the Lambuth University’s Christian Mission Education Event “Jesus and Courageous Women”. Becky says she’s blessed to be part of three families (a) biological, (b) church, and (c) Kirby Pines Retirement Community. She counts it a privilege to assume the task to develop the roster of Ministers who lead Vesper Services.
When asked to describe herself, Becky began to list the myriad religious and social programs to which she has freely given; but when I pressed her to go “behind” the evidence of her labors and describe herself to me, she gave it some quiet thought. She said that she was a kind person; that kindness was the basis of her reaching out to help people; and that God’s expectation for her was the catalyst to take the metaphorical “first step”. Handicapped by MS assaults do not stop her. She lives her faith, and the Kirby Pines Community is blessed.

Spiritual Wellness is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives. The ability to develop congruency between values and actions and to realize
a common purpose that binds creation together contributes to our Spiritual Wellness.
Spiritual Wellness is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide a purpose in our lives. While different individuals may have different views of what spiritualism is, it is generally considered to be the search for meaning and purpose in human existence, leading one to strive for a state of harmony with oneself and others while working to balance inner needs with the rest of the world. The National Wellness Institute says spiritual wellness includes the following tenets:
• It is better to ponder the meaning of life for ourselves and to be tolerant of the beliefs of others than to close our minds and become intolerant.
• It is better to live each day in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs than to do otherwise and feel untrue to ourselves.
Reaching Spiritual WellnessIt is important for everyone to explore what they believe is their own sense of meaning and purpose.
The path to spiritual wellness may involve meditation, prayer, affirmations, or specific spiritual practices that support your connection to a higher power or belief system. Yoga and meditation can also help you develop spiritual wellness.
Having compassion, the capacity for love and forgiveness, altruism, joy, and fulfillment help you enjoy your spiritual health. Your religious faith, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality.
If you are a person engaged in the process of spiritual wellness, you are willing and able to transcend yourself in order to question the meaning and purpose in your life and the lives of others. In addition, you seek to find harmony between that which lies within and the social and physical forces that come from outside.
Are you engaged in the process of spiritual wellness? Ask yourself:• Do I make time for relaxation in my day?• Do I make time for meditation and/or prayer?• Do my values guide my decisions and actions?• Am I accepting of the views of others?
If you answered “No” to any of the questions, it may indicate an area where you need toimprove the state of your spiritual wellness.

It has become a Christmas carol favorite even though its story is not really a part of the original biblical telling of the birth of Christ 2,000 years ago. In the Bible, Luke records the census that mandated Joseph and his betrothed wife, Mary, to make the trip from Nazareth in Southern Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea. He mentions the crowded inn, the shepherds, the angelic proclamation and the heavenly praise of such an event. Matthew sets forth the story of the eastern wise men travelling with their gifts for the star proclaimed king. But nowhere is there an inclusion of a small boy and his drum. This story is attributed to Katherine K. Davis with a date of 1941. What can we learn from this carol that, without historical significance, has become so well known and loved?
“The Little Drummer Boy” was invited to something special. He could join others witnessing the birth of a new born king. Unlike others in the Christmas story who brought extravagant gifts that were costly and valuable symbolized by their silver, gold and myrrh, the young boy had little to offer. He had
The Little Drummer Boyonly himself, a “poor boy too,” and his drum, certainly not an expensive musical item and certainly not the level of gift appropriate for a person of honor and prestige.
In the carol’s story, the young boy acknowledged how impoverished he was but asked Mary if he could play on his drum for the new king. The animals moved in time to the drummed song. The drummer boy with such meager provisions still did his best. And when the playing was over, he noticed the child’s response. It was a smile. It was approval and applause in this special way.
What about us? We certainly can identify with the drummer boy. We seem to be unimportant. We have so little. But if we come to the king of Christmas we will find a welcome. What little we are and have if offered will be received. No matter how limited our talent and gift may be, we can do our best. And we will receive the smile of approval. Can it really be? Will the King lovingly accept our coming and giving? Oh, yes!
Victorian poetess, Christina Rossetti, stated it so well:
What shall I give Him,poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,I’d give Him a lamb!
If I were a wise man,I would do my part!
But such as I have I give Him,I give Him my heart.
May God hear our “pa rum pump pum pum” from whatever drum we can play on today.
Till next time, Don Johnson, KP Chaplain
