The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals that have served a minimum of 100 hours of service over a 12-month period. There are three levels: Gold 250 hours and above, Silver: 175-249 hours and Bronze: 100-174 hours.

This year, the High School had a total of 45 students in grades 9-12 who received a certificate from the President of the United States. Nine students were at the gold level, 10 were at the silver, and 26 were at the bronze.

While battling the disease, he began laying the framework for the organization. He lost his battle with cancer at the age of 21, but the foundation continues his legacy by raising funds that go directly toward combatting blood cancer.

In addition, the Lacrosse Team earned the 2012 Pennsylvania Area Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association’s Most Improved Program Award.

Big News f rom the High School Lacrosse TeamThe Lower Moreland High School Lacrosse Team raised $456 at its May 20th Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast at Applebee’s that will go toward next year’s season. This year, the team has also raised over $800 to combat blood cancers through the HEADstrong Foundation. The HEADstrong Foundation was started by Nicholas Colleluori, a Delaware County lacrosse player who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during his sophomore year at Hofstra University.

Lower Moreland’s Finalist for the Voices of Inspiration AwardMaryann Romano

Congratulations to Maryann Romano, Learning Support Teacher at Murray Avenue School, who was selected as this year’s Lower Moreland finalist for the Voices of Inspiration Award this year.  Maryann was one of nearly 650 nominees submitted by students, parents, co-workers, administrators and school employees. On their nomination forms, Maryann’s co-workers spoke about her passion for and dedication to teaching special needs students. “Her gallant efforts to help children learn and prepare for the 21st century never cease.” Additionally, Maryann continues to be seen as both a mentor and a model of excellence in teaching. She is viewed as one who possesses expertise in the areas of program design, including differentiated instruction, progress monitoring and IEP development, as well as in facilitating instruction in a co-teaching setting.

The Voices of Inspiration Award was created in 2007 by the Freedom Credit Union and the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit. The District Art Show was held at the High School on May 17 which gave students from Pine Road, Murray Avenue and the High School the opportunity to showcase their work.

At the show, the 9-11 Memorial Project was also dedicated. The 9-11 Memorial was a school- wide project, conceived by Greg Pezza and the Student Council, designed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy with a visual commitment towards peace every day. Students created a clay medallion for each person who lost their life in the events of 9-11. These medallions are now part of a permanent memorial along with photographs of a full-day long observance of the anniversary that included music and speakers.

Assistance for this memorial also came from Tracey Dean and her Ceramics students and Valerie Pfaff and her Computer Graphics and Photography students.
