Choori Lamps on display during the Alchemy festival at the entrance of

SouthBank Centre London


About the Collection

Choori in Hindi means Glass Bangle. This lamp is

inspired from Indian women using clothes hanger

for hanging their glass bangles in closet. A light

that creates atmospheres with colors and

shadows. The colors appeal to mood and the soft

clinging sound to senses. It can be used as a single

unit or can be an ensemble of many creating an

installation of colored lights. The brass hanger are

inspired by the shape of a “Jharoka” in Jaipur,

Arches in Mughal Architecture, windows of

medieval Indian palaces.

“About the Collection”

TMDeveloped as part of the 'Zero Kilometre Design' concept

“THE

KATRAN LAMPS COLLECTION” is the designer's expression of beauty in frugality. Colored pieces of cloth are the by-products

of export houses from a nearby town, which were then woven into

ropes by farmer's and their wives trying to make an extra living during off

seasons. Katran meaning the numerous waste pieces of

colourful cloth that makes up the rope thus each and every product is

different in its shades and textures depending on the material available. The

same has been handwoven into vibrant, colorful vibrant material

inviting lamps creating a beautiful pattern by the play of light and

shadow sustainability and green , imbibing the true sense of

luxury. By bringing together indigenous materials and traditional

techniques in a re-contextualised manner, it has been our effort to weave

ethics, ethnic, ecology with our contemporary

culture.

The traditional handmade metal milk cans, rescued

from a junk yard and transformed into an

outdoor waterproof floor light. This artifact from our past soon faces extinction

as it is being replaced by plastic alternatives. An

attempt has been made to give it a second life as a

beautiful and functional product rising out of our

nostalgic world.

The deer wall light is an expression of the irony on a grim affair of widespread hun�ng that used to take place in mediaeval Rajasthan. The same hun�ng grounds are now farm lands, hence the use of a plough end to represent a deer head and a grain strainer to represent the mys�cal moon at the back, assembled together to form a hunter’s trophy.
