2010 ReviewDid you set goals?• If you did, did you achieve everything you set out to?

Looking back do you think you could have achieved more?• What held you back?

Procrastination• Everyone procrastinates at some time• Studies show that 20% of population worldwide are chronic

procrastinators where their procrastination has a serious impact on their productivity & happiness

Are you ready for goal success?Goals get done when we are motivated to take action• We are motivated when we care

passionately about somethingInertia • We’re all busy... ...“I don’t have time for goals as

well!”• To achieve success we need to

break the inertia cycle

4 steps to goal success

DreamsKnow your WHY

Questions to ask:• What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?• What would you do if money was no object? (such as winning the lottery)• What do you want your friends & family to say about you at your funeral?

Knowing why you want to achieve your goals will give you motivation.

With a big enough WHY we can overcome many obstacles (think of what Jane Tomlinson overcame to raise money for cancer research)

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eye off the goal”

Henry Ford

Dreams - VisualisationVisualisation• Studies show that those who just focussed their visualising on their perfect

outcome and what it will be like when they achieved their goal were LESS likely to achieve the goal.

So...• Visualise how you will take the practical steps that move you towards your

goal rather than fantasizing about the end goal• Balance the benefits of achieving the goal with a realistic assessment of

the problems you might encounter along the way• Visualisation has been shown to be about 20% more effective if you

visualise yourself as others see you (adopt a third person perspective)• Create a dream chart to remind you of your dreams but only use it when

you are feeling positive about your goal (e.g. After you have successfully achieved one of your sub-goals). Using it when you are discouraged can lead you to believe that the goal is unobtainable and encourage you to give up

Goals• Goals are dreams with deadlines. • To have a balanced life we need to have goals in each of the areas of our

life (e.g. Father, husband, investor, entrepreneur, manager)• Goals should be written and shared (tell a friend & you’re more likely to

succeed)• Goals should be stated as concrete not abstract (e.g “run 10k” rather than

“get fit”)

For each goal identify in writing:• The benefits of achieving the goal• The obstacles you are likely to face• How you will overcome the obstacles• How you will know when you have achieved the goal (what will you see,

feel, experience etc)• The reward you will get for achieving the overall goal • The rewards you will get for completing each step along the way

SMART GoalsSpecific • Can you answer the six W’s – Who, What, Where, When, Why, WhichMeasurable• Ask: How much? How many? How will I know when I’ve finished?Attainable• Does the goal fit with your values? Does it fit with your Identity? • Are you worthy of this goal? Realistic• Do you have the resources or can you access them to achieve the goal?Time Frame• Are you prepared to commit to achieving the goal by a specific date. Have

you removed the ‘wriggle room’?

Plan“People tend not to wander around and then suddenly

find themselves at the top of Mount Everest”Zig Ziglar

• Dreams are the WHY, Goals are the WHAT and Plans are the HOW• Plans need to be short-term and practical. Detailed quarterly plans work

best.• Set a theme for the quarter and make sure everyone knows what they

need to do to help achieve the quarterly goal.• Break every goal down into short action steps. Action steps should ideally

take 1 hour or less to complete• Review your plan regularly

“Plans are nothing; planning is everything” Dwight D. Eisenhower

Action - StructureStructure your week• Monday Vision – set 3 objectives for the week based on your plan & goals• Default Diary – block time for the important things or they won’t get done• Daily To Do lists – set 3 objectives for the next day before you finish each

night• Eat a frog for breakfast – clear off a task you are dreading first thing and

boost your energy for the day.• Friday Review - What worked? What could have gone better? What lessons

carry forward into next week’s Monday Review?• Don’t beat yourself up just focus on getting better every week

Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.

Peter Drucker

Action - TipsAvoiding procrastination• Just get started!• Acknowledge that you probably won’t feel more like it tomorrow!• Accept that you don’t have to feel like it to do it!• Will power (self regulation) is like a muscle, it is easily fatigued but it can

be developed• Create Implementation Intentions by deciding in advance what you will do

in the situations where you know you will be tempted to put things off. E.g. I will switch off my phone, email & internet before sitting down to start the report

• If we are not completely sure of the very next step we need to take we are likely to do nothing. Break tasks into the smallest pieces possible.

• Get someone to hold you accountable
