ISI Newsletter 4th Quarter 2017 Printed on recycled paper Maran, 8 November 2017 - Higher Education Minister, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh has officiated the opening ceremony of the Maran Community College. This community college is the 94th nationwide and the 11th in Pahang. Also present at the Maran event were Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Maran Member of Parliament, YB Dato‘ Sri Haji Ismail bin Haji Abdul Muttalib and Director General of Polytechnic Education and Community College Department Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Ismail Abdul Aziz. On 4th November prior to Maran launch, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh has also launched Tanah Merah Community College with the presence of the Director General of the Polytechnic Education and Community College Department, Prof Datuk Dr. Mohd. Ismail Abdul Aziz and Tanah Merah Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abd. Aziz. ISI was appointed as the Secretariat for the Integrated Consultancy Laboratory (ICONLAB) through PILS ™ KPT-BOS. PILS™ KPT-BOS is one of the program initiated by National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) unit of Ministry of Higher Education for the expansion program of 2 polytechnics for Department of Polytechnic Education (JPP) and 10 community colleges for Department of Community College Education (JPKK). As secretariat for the program, ISI serve as project coordinator for both contractual and academics aspects. The program opens up as platform of exposure to UA students and lecturers in architecture, engineering and quantity survey. Site possesion was held at Kangar branch Community College on September 15, 2017; Lenggong branch Community College on October 19, 2017; Jerlun branch Community College on November 15, 2017 and Gelang Patah branch Community College on December 26, 2017, whilst the remaining 2 branches, Ajil branch Community College and Kuala Nerus branch Community College are still in the early phase of contractor selections. The final works are being done before the handover to MOHE by mid-February 2018. As of June 30, 2017, 2 polytechnics have been handed over to the Polytechnic Education Department; Besut Polytechnic on 17 March 2017 and Bagan Datuk Polytechnic on May 25, 2017. Professional Certificates in Building Information Modelling (BIM) course

Kuala Lumpur, 31 Oktober 2017 - Ministry of Higher Education has awarded Institut Sultan Iskandar and ISI Ventures Sdn Bhda grant to carry out the Professional Certificates in Building Information Modeling (BIM) course at Autodesk Training Center, Institut Sultan Iskandar, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The 5 months program involves a total of 10 officers and takes place from November 2017 to March 2018.

The BIM-based course corresponds to the current transformation of the construction industry in Malaysia, towards an integrated construction system that is efficient and sustainable. ISI collaborates with industrial partner BIMASIA, one of the leaders in the BIM construction industry in Malaysia. The program also includes other BIM players from government agencies as well as private bodies such as Public Works Department, MyBIM Centre, CIDB, IJM, and Sime Darby. Learning experience is intensified through a 1-week ‘case study’ attachment with PWD; as well as through a 2-month industrial attachment with BIMASIA where the participants are given a real BIM project experience.

At the end of the program, the participants will earn three certifications: Autodesk Revit Architecture Professional, CIDB BIM Modeler (Architecture) and CIDB BIM Coordinator certifications.

LAM validation visit to The University of Sheffield

Sheffield, United Kingdom, 25 October 2017 - ISI Executive Director, Associate Professor Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffin was invited to the School of Architecture, The University of Sheffield to head the process of validating the architecture degree programmes.

The School underwent a thorough validation process to ensure they remain on the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) list of recognised programmes.

Prior to this visit, he has led other architecture accreditation visits to universities around the world under the wings of the Council of Architectural Accreditation and Education Malaysia (CAAEM) endorsed by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia.

Deraf Halatuju danKerangka Dasar SenibinaIdentiti Kebangsaan (DASIK)Alor Gajah, 31 October 2017 - A paperwork titled ‘Deraf Halatuju dan Kerangka Dasar Seni Bina Identiti Kebangsaan (DASIK)’ has been presented by Associate Professor Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar, Executive Director of ISI through Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) during the PWD Design Forum 2017.

The two-day seminar was held from 30 - 31 October at the CREaTE Main Hall, Alor Gajah, Melaka, jointly organised by the Architects branch and Center for Excellence in Engineering and Technology (CREaTE), Public Works Department (JKR).

The opening ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Dato‘ Sri Ir. Dr. Roslan bin Md Taha, Director General of Public Works Malaysia. The ceremony was also attended by Mr Kamaluddin bin Hj. Abdul Rashid, Deputy Director General of Works (Building Sector) and Sr. Ratna binti Hj. Mahyuddin, Deputy Director-General of Public Works (Expert Sector) accompanied by Ar. Zairul Azidin Bin Badri, Senior Director, Architects Branch and Ir. Dr. Che Hassandi bin Abdullah, Senior Director, CREaTE as well as Directors and Head of Division from JKR and CREaTE.

The objective of the seminar this year was to create a networking linkage platform - Connectivity expertise between various disciplines of JKR, Government Agencies and Public Institutions of Higher Education, enhancing creativity and innovation among designers and exposing the National Identity Architecture Policy (DASIK) direction and framework. A total of 8 papers were presented during the seminar.

Heritage experts from around the world gather in Delhi

New Delhi, 13 December 2017 - The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) held its 19th General Assembly in New Delhi, India between 11th to 15th December 2017. It is one of the largest gatherings of interdisciplinary experts in heritage from various different backgrounds in the world. In conjunction with the assembly to discuss and share about the common interest, the Scientific Symposium was held concurrently with the event.

This year, the selected theme was “Heritage and Democracy” and numerous experts, practitioners and academics share their works and findings with regards to heritage and conservation, both the tangibles and intangibles. Over 1000 participants and guests from 113 countries converged for the event, including architects, historians, conservationists, archaeologists, art historians, geographers, anthropologists, engineers and town planner.

For the first time since its inception in 1965, a representative from ICOMOS Malaysia was selected to present a paper in the prestigious symposium. The paper entitled ‘Utilizing Generative Computational Algorithm in Interpreting Historical Elements in Architectural Design’ was authored by Azari Mat Yasir, a lecturer from the Department of Architecture, co-authored by Yeow Yann Herng, who recently graduated from UTM and now pursuing his M.Arch in National University of Singapore, and Associate Professor Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffin, Executive Director of Institut Sultan Iskandar.

ICOMOS strives for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. It is the only global non-government organisation of this kind, which is dedicated to promoting the application of theory, methodology, and scientific techniques to the conservation of the architectural and archaeological heritage. Its work is based on the principles enshrined in the 1964 International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites (the Venice Charter). The members of ICOMOS contribute to improving the preservation of heritage, the standards and the techniques for each type of cultural heritage property: buildings, historic cities, cultural landscapes and archaeological sites

Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zamani Ahmad as keynote speaker at SENTA 2017 conference

Surabaya, Indonesia, 6 December 2017 -The 17th Conference on Marine Technology (SENTA 2017) aimed to provide a platform for researchers, academicians, practitioners, as well as industrial professionals from all over the world to present their research results and development activities in the fields of Marine Tech-nology.

ISI Deputy Director II, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Zamani Ah-mad spoke as one of the keynote speaker during the conference. Prof. Ir Daniel Mohammad Rosyid PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Technology (FTK) expressed his appreciation to those who have attended the conference. According to him, marine technology for sustainable development is important where the trend is now moving towards Asia.

Organised by the Department of Marine Engineering Faculty of Marine Technology at their Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Sukolilo Surabaya campus, the conference provided op-portunities for the participants to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns, practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted in the field of Marine Technology in sorder to support sustainable development.

Pre-launch of the Policy & Procedure for Accreditation of Interior Design ProgrammesKuala Lumpur, 28 November 2017 - The Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) proudly organised the President’s Medal Award Night and Pre-launch of the Policy & Procedure for Accreditation of Interior Design Programmes at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato ‘Sri Haji Fadilah Bin Haji Yusof, Minister of Works Malaysia and was emceed by Associate Professor Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar, our Executive Director.

A Special Architecture Education Award was also awarded to the late Ar. Saari Omar.

Accreditation of educational programmes in interior design seeks primarily to ensure that the standards attained by successful graduates of the programmes are adequate with regard to the design, technical and professional skills required for competent and profesional interior design practice. Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar was a key person to the success of the policy.

Putrajaya 9 November 2017 - Our Executive Director, Associate Professor Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffin was a panelist and presented the results of the Malaysia Syariah Index research in Environmental and Infrastructure Development during the Maqasid Syariah Executive Dialogue Session at Dewan Kristal, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Putrajaya.

The first phase of the Malaysian Syariah Index two years ago was to explain to the people the Maqasid Syariah while

the second phase which began this year involved the implementation of the Syariah Index into existing policies. The Malaysian Syariah Index which was introduced in 2015 is a scientific and comprehensive measurement system to evaluate the government’s administration based on the five foundational principles of Maqasid Syariah which are the preservation of religion/faith, life, intellect, lineage, property/wealth.

Visit to the newly opened Ikea Tebrau

Johor Bahru, 23 November 2017 - 8 ISI Johor Bahru employees managed an outing visit to the newly opened Ikea Tebrau, Johor Bahru to learn space design, combining function with sustainability in mind.

The trip was also as a drive to building employees morale and therefore to create a positive team relationships that are productive.
