Pilkington’s marketing and merchandising function works on behalf of

customers to identify the needs and requirements of key market sectors from

retail, wholesale and merchants to housebuilding, construction companies

and developers.

For any type of development Pilkington’s offers off the shelf marketing suite

and choice centre solutions as well as bespoke displays and product binders

as required. The merchandising function offers added value solutions to

Warehousing & Logistics

Warehousing and logistics resources are founded on reliability and

The long life cycle of these products results in extensive replacement

intervals reducing requirement for new products and reducing waste. Made

from natural materials and without VOCs ceramic and porcelain, are ideal

for today’s architecture and interior design contributing to credits in many

environmental assessment frameworks.

In the production of ceramic and porcelain wall and floor tiles, we recycle

water and tile sludge back into the process and into the tile body reducing

waste streams and increasing recycled content of our products.

Chemical Resistance

In specific conditions, with a risk of spilling acid or base

it is important that a tile is resistant to these chemicals.

All tiles are examined for acids, bases and pool water

components. Glazed and non-glazed stoneware tiles show

best resistance - also resistance to strong solutions of acids

and bases according to PN-EN 10545-13. This parameter

is essential when laying tiles in industrial plants, in foodstuff

and chemical industries or swimming pools.

Frost Resistance

This parameter specifies the resistance of ceramic tiles to

negative temperatures. During the examination, tiles are

subjected to 100 cycles of freezing and defrosting. While

defrosting water penetrates a tile and while freezing water

accumulated in a tile freezes and increases its volume. If

a tile is sintered as hard as stoneware or Klinkier then the

amount of accumulated water so low that it does not damage

the tile. Remember that a tile’s frost resistance by no means

guarantees a final result - durable ceramic flooring, e.g. on

a terrace. It is determined by proper installation works and

using adequate construction materials for the installation of

tiles outside.

Absorbability

Tile absorbability is a capacity to absorb and retain water.

It is a basic criterion, which divides tiles according to their

properties:

• Group BIa - stoneware tiles with low absorbability of

E<=0.5%;

• Group BIb - Klinkier tiles with absorbability of

0.5%<E<3%;

• Group BIIa - floor tiles with absorbability of 3< E<6% ;

• Group BIII - floor tiles with absorbability of E>10%.

Tile absorbability parameter is closely linked to the tile’s

internal structure resulting from manufacturing technology.

The less free spaces in the structure of the tile, the less

absorbability and better operating parameters of the tile,

such as: fracture resistance, frost resistance. In operating

conditions, the absorbing capacity of the tile can be

decreased by: the application of adequate joints. Water

absorption in glazed tiles takes place only from the side,

which is not glazed.

Stain Resistance

It is an important performance trait, which should be taken

into account while selecting the type of tiles, which are to be

laid in places exposed to the activity of staining substances

(in kitchens, garages, industrial facilities etc.). Glazed tiles,

due to a glaze layer on the surface, are washable and

achieve the highest class of stain resistance. Non-glazed

stoneware tiles are more susceptible to stains, therefore we

recommend coating them with a chemical, which helps to

keep them clean and protects them from stains.

Rectification

Rectification is a mechanical treatment of tile sides and

consists in very accurate cutting of their edges to a

specified size, usually to within ± 0.3 mm. Rectified tiles are

characterized by decidedly better size accuracy than non-

rectified tiles sorted into size groups. Slight size differences

between rectified tiles allow you to use minimum joints

between tiles, i.e. 1mm.

PEI Rating Classes

PEI rating (Porcelain Enamel Institute) refers to surface

abrasion test of glazed tiles. The test, resistance to surface

abrasion of glazed tiles intended for use on floors, is

conducted according to EN 10545-7 which is a requirement

of EN11441, Ceramic tiles – Definitions, classification,

characteristics and marking.

PEI rating is only given to glazed tiles, full body or through

body porcelain without glazing are not given this rating.

Unglazed, full body floor tiles are tested for resistance to deep

abrasion of unglazed tiles: the test value is removed volume,

in cubic millimetres and the test method is EN10545-6.

PEI rating indicates the wear resistance of the glazed tile

surface and this value can be used to determine suitability of

the floor tile for specific uses.

The recommendations for suitability of the tile using the PEI

Ratings are as follows:

CLASS 0 - No Foot Traffic - Wall tile only and should not

be used on floors.

CLASS 1 - Very light traffic - Very low foot traffic, bare foot

only (Master Ensuite, spa bathroom).

CLASS 2 - Light Traffic - Slipper or soft-soled shoes.

Second level main bathroom areas, bedrooms.

CLASS 3 - Light to Moderate Traffic - Any residential area

with the possible exception of some entries and kitchens if

extremely heavy or abrasive traffic is anticipated.

CLASS 4 - Moderate to Heavy Traffic - High foot traffic,

areas where abrasive or outside dirt could be tracked.

Residential entry, kitchen, balcony, and countertop.

The nature of the background/base is a prime consideration

in deciding the choice of any intermediate substrate or

preparatory treatment necessary before tiling, and will also

influence the choice of bedding material. Refer to BS 5385,

Part 1, Section 3 and BS 5385, Part 3, Clauses 12-18

(Floors).

Early consideration should be given to the provision of

movement joints, their type and location.

Movement Joints - Walls

For interior wall tile installations, movement joints should be

located:

• Over existing structural movement joints

• Where tiling abuts other materials

• Where tiling is continuous across junctions of different

background materials

• In large tiled areas, at internal vertical corners and at

3m to 4.5m centres, horizontally and vertically

• Where stresses are likely to be concentrated, e.g. at

changes of alignment

Except where the background is mature and stable, the

movement joint should extend throughout the depth of tile,

adhesive, and render and should be a minimum of 6mm in

width.

Movement Joints - Floors

For interior or exterior floor tile installations, movement joints

should be located:

• Over existing structural movement joints

• Around the perimeter of the floor and where tiling

abuts columns, curbs, steps and plant fixed to the

base

• In large floor areas tiling should be divided into bays

not exceeding 8m to 10m intervals. On suspended

floors the bay size should be reduced and additional

joints provided over supporting walls and beams

• All floor tiles joints should extend throughout the depth

of the tile, bed and screed and should be 6mm to

10mm in width

drying Times

Before starting work ensure that the background/base has

been allowed to dry by exposure to air for a sufficient period

of time. All drying times are conditional on several situational

factors and therefore need to be individually assessed.

Further information about drying times can be found in the

relevant Codes of Practice. BS 5385:1 for internal walls, BS

5385:2 for external walls, BS 5385:3 for floors, BS

5385:4 for special conditions, BS 5385:5 for natural stone

agglomerated stone and terrazzo.

Sealing

Polished Porcelain Stoneware

In the case of this material, we recommend to impregnate

the dry and clean covering after the first cleaning taking

place immediately after finishing the laying works. If an

impregnation is carried out once, it improves the easiness

of care and considerably facilitates the removal of stains

caused by dirt, oil and coloured liquids.

EN 12004:2001 Adhesives for tiles - Definitions and

specifications sets out the minimum performance

requirements for tile adhesives and the designation and

classification system for the different types of adhesives

e.g. cementitious, dispersion, reaction resin based on the

performance of the product.

Early consideration should be given to the provision of

movement joints, their type and location.

Grouts

BS EN 13888:2002 Grouts for tiles. Definitions and

specifications applies to ceramic tile grouts for internal and

external tile installations both for walls and floors.

The terms and definitions of this standard apply to

cementitious and reaction resin based grouts and classifies

these grouts based upon the test criteria outlined in this

standard, using relevant grout test methods.

For further guidance on tile fixing and choice of the

correct adhesive and grout, please refer to the relevant

British Standards, The Tile Association fixing guide and/or

manufacturer’s instructions.

The choice of bedding system will depend on:

At present, the UK does not have one specific British

Standard which would deal with the issue of slip resistance

for floor surfaces. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

however, specifies the responsibilities for preventing

slips and trips at workplace for flooring manufacturers,

architects and designers, employers, workers and footwear

manufacturers.

The HSE has published comprehensive guidance of how and

why slips and trips occur and how to prevent them. HSE’s

current preference is for the use of the pendulum or the

ramp based test methods for assessment of pedestrian floor

surfaces or flooring materials, with additional information

from surface roughness measurement where applicable.

The HSE also provides a freely downloadable software

package that allows an operator to assess the slip potential

of pedestrian walkway surfaces. For further information,

As the research into a reproducible and representative test

to measure the slip resistance of flooring materials continues

the specifier is best advised to seek expert guidance.

resistance of flooring products and the results of our tests

Pendulum Test BS7976-2

This test is used for determining the coefficient of friction

under wet and dry conditions using a Four S Rubber Slider

(also known as Slider 96).

The apparatus is portable (just) and is therefore useful for

determining the slip resistance of floorings in use. The

presently accepted limits for flooring using this technique are

shown in the following table.

Shoe Shod Ramp Test din 51130

This test is used for testing slip resistance of a surface

to shoe shod traffic tested on a ramp in the presence of

a surface lubricant. This test is most useful for assessing

profiled tiles, or tiles which are to be used in areas where

there is a high risk of contamination.

Note that the lowest classification is R9, and that this is

therefore not a good specification for slip resistance, and

BARE Foot Ramp Test din 51097

This test is used for the slip resistance of floor tiles under

wet and barefoot conditions. The tiles are fixed on a ramp

which is made wet, and a test person walks on them with

the ramp set at a succession of increasing angles until the

person slips. The angle at which they slip is recorded. Tiles

are classified into one of three groups, A, B, or C, as an

indication of their level of slip resistance. We would normally

recommend that tiles for use in wet barefoot areas achieve

classification C.

The displacement volume value for a floor is a measure of

the space between the foot and the floor surface, with higher

values relating to a greater volume of debris that can be held

by the texture without compromising the slip resistance of

the tile. Values less than V4 are not recorded.

Surface Roughness Measurement

A portable test method, using instruments such as the

Surtronic 3+, that measures surface micro-roughness,

stated as an average roughness figure in microns, RzDIN,

which may be useful to assess slip risk.

The test is most relevant on flat tiles, as it may not be

possible to get a reading on a tile with an uneven surface.

The method is suitable for on site testing.

Appropriate cleaning and maintenance routines are essential

for any wall and floor surface to maintain them in good

condition and to retain their attractiveness.

Floor surfaces in particular require an effective cleaning

regime to ensure the risk of slips and trips are eliminated.

Each material has specific cleaning and maintenance

requirements which should be taken into account to ensure

the correct cleaning equipment and products are used.

Glazed Ceramic, Porcelain & Vitrified Tiles

day to day Care

Some glazed wall tiles are supplied having a thin wax

coating to the back of the tile in order to prevent scratching

of the glazed surface during packaging and transit. The wax

may often be transferred to the tile face and is best removed

with white spirit and a soft cloth.

The routine cleaning of glazed ceramic tiles should be

carried out after the removal of any loose dirt or grit by

wiping off with a dry cloth, followed by washing with warm

water to which a neutral, low sulphate detergent has been

added.

After a further rinse with water to ensure thorough removal

of the detergent solution the installation should be given a

final wipe down and polish with a clean, dry, soft cloth.

Longer Term Maintenance

At times grouting can become discoloured over time, if this

happens it is possible to regrout the tile joints or use grout

rejuvenator.

The use of grout protectors is recommended as these help

preserve the grout in its original condition.

Re-Grouting Tiles

Where grouting has become discoloured, scrape it out a

few millimetres below the surface and apply fresh grout. A

special tool should be used to carefully remove grout without

scratching the face of the tile.

After removing grout, brush out dust and debris from the

joints, wash down the surface and allow to dry. Once

surfaces and joints are dry, apply the new grout carefully to

the joints. Allow the newly applied grout to dry according to

the manufacturer’s instructions.

Rejuvenating Grout

Grout rejuvenator often comes in the form of a ready-mixed

paint which forms a waterproof bond over the old grouting.

Grout paints are available in many different colours. Before

applying grout rejuvenator the surfaces must be clean and

dry. Grout rejuvenator should be applied carefully using an

applicator brush with a back-and-forth motion. Thin, even

coats should be applied, limiting the amount of grout

colorant that gets on the tile. Allow the grout rejuvenator to

dry according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Refurbishment

A very common decision to make when re-tiling is whether

to tile over existing tile or remove the old tiles first. It can

be time consuming to remove old tiles and also the wall or

floor surface may be damaged by removing the tiles and

need subsequent making good before re-tiling. Also, the

possibility of damaging nearby surfaces, or sinks, baths etc

should be considered.

It is quite common to tile over existing tile, and generally this

is not a problem provided the appropriate factors are taken

into account. The following as minimum should be

considered, although each project requires individual

assessment before commencing works:

• The existing tiles must be soundly bonded to the walls

• Some backgrounds such as plaster and plasterboard may

have a recommended weight limit for a square unit of

measurement, this should not be exceeded

• Only certain tile adhesives are suitable for tile on tile. Check

manufacturer’s instructions

• Tile over tile can be noticeable around the perimeters of a

room such as coving, door jambs, etc.

Unglazed Vitrified & Porcelain Floor Tiles

day to day Care

Adherence to the following cleaning procedures will enable

you to take maximum advantage of the properties of Vitrified

& Fully Vitrified floor tiles. The materials and methods

recommended are the outcome of many years experience

and, when used in association with a regular cleaning routine,

will enable the floor to be maintained to a high standard of

cleanliness, slip resistance, hygiene and appearance.

On newly laid floors there may be residual cement on the

tile surface. All traces of this must be removed by application

of a mildly acid de-cementing solution (e.g. Hagesan Extra),

followed by thorough rinsing, then proceed as follows.

Regular cleaning with water (warm or hot, particularly if oil

or grease is present), and a neutral or mildly alkaline (pH to

8) detergent, mixed in the proportions recommended by the

manufacturer, will remove all but the most stubborn dirt.

The water/detergent mixture must be allowed to remain

on the floor for sufficient time (5 to 15 minutes) to allow it

to penetrate and emulsify the dirt, after which it should be

rinsed thoroughly with clean water to remove all traces of

the mixture.

Large areas of plain or textured surface tiles are most readily

cleaned with rotary, cylindrical or reversing mechanical

scrubbing machines. These should rotate at slow to medium

speed. Such machines are frequently provided with a suction

drying facility.

If so equipped the machine should first be used with the

suction facility switched off to permit the water detergent

mix used in the scrubbing process to remain on the floor

to penetrate the dirt layer. Allow at least 5 to 15 minutes to

elapse, then repeat the scrubbing operation, but with clean

water only, and with the suction drying facility switched on. It

is the rinsing process which removes the dirt.

Spillages of oil, fat or material likely to stain or cause a

slipping hazard, should be removed immediately by using

detergents and hot water, followed by rinsing with clean

water.

Longer Term Maintenance

Periodically, clean the floor using rotary, cylindrical or

reversing scrubbing machine but with the addition of an

abrasive powder (e.g. Vim, Ajax, fine Silica Sand). This

will scour the tiles, remove impacted or built up dirt, and

generally ‘refresh’ the floor. It will not damage unglazed tiles.

Remove the residue with clean water rinsing before it has

been allowed to dry out.

High velocity water jets are sometimes available for general

use and/or for removal of stubborn dirt. These will not

damage the tiles, but may erode the joints if used regularly.

If oil or grease is present, use the jet with warm or hot water

and with a neutral detergent.

technicalinfoNatural Stone decoration Elements

Like any other natural stone, granite is also a naturally grown

material. Consequently, each individual granite tile and

natural stone decoration element become a unique piece.

Different structures and colour shades underline the

character of this natural material and have always been

typical of the appearance of a natural stone covering.

As a result, we can not assume liability for differences with

regard to colour, structure and other natural characteristics.

The natural stone articles do not meet the chemical and

physical requirements of DIN EN 144 11. For cleaning, only

acid-free, non-caustic cleaning agents may be used.

The illustrations of the various sorts of natural stone

decoration element in this price list/programme of delivery

convey only a general impression. For reasons of printing,

however, they have to be regarded as non-binding.

Glass decoration Elements

The glass decorations offered by us are, for the most part,

handmade design elements. Each piece is unique.

As a result of the manufacturing process, slight variations

with regard to the size, the colour and the structure may

occur, which lend this special product its individual character.

For cleaning, we recommend a commercially available

glass cleaning agent, which should be applied by means

of a clean and soft cloth. To avoid permanent damage on

the surface, it is absolutely necessary to make sure that the

glass elements do not come into contact with scratching

(mortar and bonding agent residues) and abrasive materials

(cleaning powder). The illustrations of the glass decorations

in this price list/programme of delivery convey only a general

impression. For technical reasons of printing, however, they

can not be considered as binding.
