The first Fair Trade farmer-owned certification system, the Small Producer Symbol (SPP), will arrive this fall on Equal Exchange coffees around the country. This logo symbolizes a bold step
forward as the very folks for whom the Fair Trade movement was built take a leadership role in shaping their own destinies. The system is impressive, with General Standards incorporating four dozen criteria for small farmer member organizations. Buyers who use the SPP must also meet nearly three dozen criteria. Perhaps most impressive, the SPP is run and governed by the farmers themselves. After decades of this movement being essentially managed by offices thousands of miles away from the source, you can now trust that SPP labeled coffee will never sell out, will always be authentic and will always be small farmer.Read more at smallfarmersbigchange.coop.Beer Growler Fill

The demand for non-GMO feed is significantly growing, according to feed suppliers.
Non-GMO feeds are made from a range of ingredients including corn, soybeans, field peas, alfalfa, grains (such as wheat, oats, barley and milo), and protein meals from soy, canola, safflower, camelina, flax and peanuts. Non-GMO feeds are given to hogs, dairy and beef cattle, chickens, turkeys, goats, horses, rabbits, and even elk and deer. The key to increasing non-GMO feed supply is increasing non-GMO crop acres. Tell your food companies you want non-GMO by supporting Non-GMO Project Verified foods!
• Increased consumer awareness of GMOs• Growing demand for healthier foods• Increased “backyard chicken raising” trend• Non-GMO Project Verified labeling

After working on conventional farms in North Central Washington for eight years, Jeff and Jeanette Herman realized, first hand, the effects of harsh chemicals and unsustainable practices. They loved farming, but needed to farm in an environment that was healthy for them, their future children and the food they were growing.
In 1982, Jeff and Jeanette moved to Eastern Washington and planted Cliffside Orchard on seven acres of untouched land, using exclusively organic practices. Since then, they’ve grown the orchard to over 1000 trees, consisting of a wide variety of fruits: cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, pears and apples. Cliffside is nestled against a hillside at 1600 feet elevation above Lake Roosevelt. This location offers protection from the harsh climate of Eastern Washington.
Since the Orchard’s inception, the Hermans have maintained the use of organic practices, producing healthy, safe, tree ripened and nutritious fruits that also have amazing flavor. They were one of the first Certified Organic farms in Washington State (grower #30) and are certified organic with the WSDA.
At Cliffside, they believe that healthy trees and soil deter potential diseases and pests, while at the same time producing a superior tasting fruit. As Morgan, Pilgrim’s Produce Manager says, “Jeff and Jeanette’s decades of experience are reflected in Cliffside’s quality. Warehouse-packed fruit will never compare to their tree-ripened fruit!”
Check out their October bounty of apples and pears in Pilgrim’s Produce and taste the delicious difference.

Our EnvironmentHormones are our body’s chemical messengers. They affect our metabolism, sexual function, reproduction and mood. Hormone disruptors, also known as “xenoestrogens”, mimic both hormone building blocks and complete hormones. They are found in things we come into contact with every day: petroleum based products, parabens, pesticides, plastics, processed foods, commercial beauty products and even non-stick cookware. By avoiding these products, cooking in glass and/or non-coated metal pans, and never heating or storing foods in plastic, you can minimize exposure to xenoestrogens. Our FoodThe foods we eat also play a big role in keeping hormones balanced. Tran-fats in processed vegetable oils (think fried foods) and polyunsaturated fats oxidize easily in the body, causing inflammation and cell mutation, and often resulting in hormone disruption. You can improve your hormone balance and overall health by reducing or avoiding conventional meats, processed foods and baked goods (all higher in pro-inflammatory fats). Eating more anti-inflammatory fats such
as those found in healthy oils, cold-water fish (like salmon), chia seeds and grass-fed beef can reverse or prevent inflammation. Supplementing your diet with anti-inflammatory, omega-3 fats (from cold-water fish or plants, such as evening primrose or borage) may also be helpful. Common Fats to Avoid:Fried foods, conventional meats, vegetable oil, peanut oil, canola oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated or trans fats, margarine, and shortening. Healthier Fats to Choose:Organically grown coconut oil, real butter from grass-fed cows, ghee and tallow or lard from pastured animals. Also, grass-fed beef, salmon, chia seeds and avocados. Leptin RegulationLeptin is a master hormone, and if it is out of balance or if you are resistant to it, no other hormones will balance well. Balancing leptin will also help boost fertility, make weight loss easier, improve sleep and lower inflammation for optimum hormone health naturally. Studies show that the majority of overweight individuals with difficulty losing weight have leptin resistance. This resistance is sensed as starvation, so multiple mechanisms are activated
to increase fat stores, rather than burn excess fat stores. So, the person ends up eating excess food, while the body thinks it is starving and tells the person to eat more. As with all hormones, leptin resistance is a complex issue with many contributing factors. While it is best to consult with a wellness professional to determine if you have leptin resistance, here are some tips to reversing this issue: Diet:Eat few to no simple starches, refined foods, sugars or fructose. Instead, consume protein and healthy fats first thing in the morning, don’t snack, and go on a nighttime 12-hour fast (6pm to 6am). Also, eat more Omega-3s (fish, grass-fed meats, chia seeds) and minimize your Omega-6s (vegetable oils, conventional meats, grains). Lifestyle:Sleep: be in bed by 10pm. During the day, get outside, walk barefoot on the grass, expose some skin to the mid-day sun. If you exercise, don’t do cardio just for the sake of cardio, and workout in the evening to support hormone levels.

Vitanica, a locally owned and operated company near Portland, OR, specializes in caring for women’s health. We are committed to serving women through education, research, and the finest quality in effective natural supplements. All of our products are formulated by Dr. Tori Hudson, a Naturopathic Physician and a native Oregonian specializing in women’s health care.
Dr. Tori Hudson, N.D.Dr. Hudson is an avid outdoors venturer, who despite her busy schedule, always makes time for long walks, kayaking, camping and hiking. She has been a clinician for over 29 years and is the Medical Director at her Northwest Portland clinic, A Woman’s Time, where she works with several of her talented colleagues. In addition, she is a clinical professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, and at Bastyr University in Washington. Dr. Hudson has devoted her life to research, education, and her clinical work in the interest of assisting women to better health. One of the ways she does this is through quarterly seminars for professionals, as the Program Director for the Institute of Women’s Health and Integrative Medicine. The goal of the program is to provide additional education and training for health care professionals and to support and conduct research in the areas of women’s health and integrative natural medicine. Dr. Hudson also does numerous lectures nationwide at professional conferences and public consumer lectures, as well as educational trainings for retailers. Her book, Women’s Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, now in its second edition, is regarded as a primary reference for women’s health care and alternative medicine by both health care professionals and women seeking self help and information. She covers a wide range of topics, including cardiovascular care, contraception, endometriosis, menopause, menstrual cycles, and more. Dr. Hudson discusses each topic with a clear view of when and how to use natural therapies for self help and when to seek the help of an integrative or alternative practitioner. Dr. Hudson is also a regular contributing author to numerous articles, including the “Townsend Letter” and numerous natural health publications.
Supporting Women’s HealthVitanica was started 19 years ago, with Dr. Hudson’s business partner, Doug Stapf. She had ten years of clinical experience to draw on, and what she realized at the time was a lack of readily available, high quality, effective, and affordable nutritional/herbal supplements for women’s specific issues. She wanted to create products not only for her patients in her clinic, but also for health foods stores, so women could have affordable and reliable natural health care options available on the shelf.
Vitanica products address topics that affect women directly, as in the gynecology specific areas of pregnancy, menstrual cycle care and menopause; and topics that affect women more so than men, as in sleep support, adrenal support, gastrointestinal support, urinary tract support, emotional and calming support; and topics that affect women differently than men, as in cardiovascular support. All the formulas are developed by Dr. Hudson and are based on the utilization of three aspects: her clinical experience, ongoing scientific research and the time honored tradition of natural medicine in women’s health care. All Vitanica products are manufactured with the utmost care and testing for accuracy, purity and potency. Only the highest quality ingredients go into the products, and loyal supporters, both professionals and consumers, have come to know and rely on the consistent quality Vitanica is known for. The products are made without binders, fillers, preservatives, artificial colors or flavorings. The entire line is 100% vegetarian suitable, with the majority of the line also being suitable for vegans.
