The Pope’s Monthly Intention October

The Laity's Mission in the Church We pray that by the virtue of baptism, the laity,

especially women, may participate more in areas of responsibility in the Church.

Cantors wanted! The music department is seeking additional volunteers to serve as cantor during weekend Masses. The cantor’s primary mandate is to sing the Responsorial Psalm during Mass, but also to assist the assembly with the singing of hymns as needed. Interested singers should contact Mark Haas: [email protected]

(Note: Music activities currently follow Diocesan COVID-19 precautions: Max. 2 musicians in one space; max. 30-minute rehearsals; masks on with social distancing.)

Under the guidance of Bishop Brennan and the Diocesan Music Commission, we will observe the singing of the Eucharistic Acclamations during Mass (ie: Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Amen, Agnus Dei). The United States Catholic Bishops emphasize that, “preference is given to [these acclamations] that are of greater importance.” (Document, Sing to the Lord, p.110-118) As a precaution, we will continue to recite the Gloria, omit a Communion Hymn, and observe limited entrance and recessional hymn verses.

Please pray for Fr. Binu and our other priests who are on retreat this week.

Our Knights of Columbus Council has been awarded Star Council status, one of five to receive this honor in West Virginia. In the past year we have helped Father Thien and the Clay County Food Pantry with Thanksgiving and 40 Cans for Lent Food Drives, Manna Meal, our Catholic Schools and several Church Celebrations and have been able to help because our Sacred Heart Congregation has helped our council. Under the current circumstances, the needs of our community are greater than they have ever been, and our council will continue to ask our parish for their help to support efforts to help those who need our assistance.

To: The parishioners of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral

From: Bill Hagy, Regional Director Catholic Charities West Virginia/Western Region

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Sacred Heart Family for welcoming Catholic Charities to your campus. As you know we are now housed in the Sacred Heart Family Life Center at 1024 Quarrier Street across from the Elementary School. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restraints, at this time we can’t have an open house, but I would like to extend to each of you the opportunity to stop by during our hours of operation (8:30-12 and 1-4:30) to introduce yourself and meet the team.

Catholic Charities is guided by God’s love, and collaborates with community partners, parishes and families to provide caring and compassionate services to people in need and work toward lasting and meaningful change. To better accomplish this, we are opening our doors to collaborate with all area charity/service-based agencies to provide basic assistance to those in need.

We need your help. We need volunteers to help us staff our reception desk/phone so that we can maximize all services. If you have a day, or even part of a day throughout the week…we could use your help. Volunteers are needed to staff all hours the Center is open; training will be made available. For any questions you may have, stop by or call 304.380.0162.

Thank you once again for welcoming us into your family. Bill Hagy

Saint of the Week

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Feast Day – October 5 A year after emigrating from Bavaria to America in 1843 he was ordained a Redemptorist priest. He worked for six years with St. John Neumann. A kindly confessor and dynamic mission preacher, he ministered mainly in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Michigan, and directed two seminaries. During the Civil War, he petitioned President Lincoln to exempt seminarians from the draft and, when refused, he ordained them because priests were exempt. In 1866 he began working with immigrants in New Orleans and died in a yellow fever epidemic.

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Msgr. Sadie) (years ago) The story is told of a group of Catholic boys who lived in the same neighborhood in Scranton PA. Whenever they passed the Jewish Synagogue on the way to the Rialto Theater, one wise guy in the group would say to the youngest or newest boy in the group “Your shoe is untied.” As the boy looked down at his shoes, they all cried out. “You're excommunicated; you bowed your head in front of a Jewish Church.” Like many of us in those days, they were so Catholic and so isolated from other faiths, they did not know the term “synagogue,” but somehow they had picked up the idea from parents and neighbors that, as far as God was concerned, they were number ONE. Other religions were to be avoided, or in some case even scorned. My dear friends in Christ, today we shall see evidence of ignorance, misunderstanding, and even prejudice toward non-Christians by Christians, including some Catholics. One even hears the startling accusation that anti-Semitism is a natural byproduct of Roman Catholic theology. As one trained in Catholic theology prior to the Second Vatican Council, I can certainly argue against that charge. And during the Second Vatican Council, the Church officially proclaimed that “neither all Jews indiscriminately, (i.e. at the time of Jesus) nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during Jesus’ passion. It is true that the Church is the new people of God, yet the Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accused as if this followed from Holy Scripture.” Although I can point to such teachings of our Catholic Church which officially condemned anti-Semitism, that does not mean that some Catholics do not harbor in their hearts the sin of anti-Semitism. Even today, the Bible can be used to stir up old prejudices and fears about our Jewish brothers and sisters. For example, each Sunday our first Scripture reading in the liturgy comes from the Hebrew Scriptures, what we call the Old Testament. Our last reading is from the New Testament. This very structure may lead some to the false conclusion that only Christians are saved, only Christians have all the answers, only Christians are favored by God. The Bishops of the Second Vatican Council, in their document entitled “The Constitution On Divine Revelation” concluded, “God, the inspired author of both Testaments wisely arranged that the New Testament be hidden in the Old and the Old be made manifest in the New. For, though Christ established the New Covenant in His Blood, still the books of the Old Testament with all their parts, caught up into the proclamation of the Gospel, acquire and show forth their full meaning in the New Testament, and in turn shed light on it and explain it.” Today's Gospel reading of the Parable of the Wicked Tenants gives us an example of how we can write off our spiritual cousins, the Jews. The first part of the parable was a story told by Jesus. Like any good storyteller, Jesus often used exaggerated examples to hold the attention of His listeners and to get His point across. Here we see Jesus emphasize His Father's patience with His people as He sends prophet after prophet and finally His own Son to get people to turn from evil and turn to God. Matthew took that story of Jesus and applied it to the circumstances of the Church of his day. He said the vineyard was Israel, the tenants were the Jewish leaders, the slaves were the Prophets and the Son was Jesus whom they crucified.

Page 19: Pilgrimage Site for: Diocesan Shrine of Santo Niño “Annunciation” … · 2020. 10. 2. · 5757 or mail your resume to 1114 Virginia St. E., Charleston, WV 25301. Knights of Columbus

It is easy to understand, especially in the culture where Jews were despised, how uneducated preachers and teachers using today's Gospel, could fan the flames of anti-Semitism. They could say, mistakenly, “it's right here in the Word of God.” What they missed though - and what we too often miss - is the fact that the challenge of this Gospel was meant not just for people 2000 years ago but for us today and for others tomorrow. Jesus challenges us not to be smug in our faith, not to reject people because they are not one with us, but to be and act like Him who welcomed all, even the outcast. We do not deny the obvious history of 20 centuries or religious bigotry, hatreds, and persecutions. Pope Pius XII added his evidence to the same fact when he sought to save the Jews of Italy and Germany. He said “For centuries the Jews have been unjustly treated and despised. It is time that they were treated with justice and humanity. God wills it and the Church wills it! Saint Paul tells us that the Jews are our brothers. Instead of being treated as strangers, they should be welcomed as friends.” Those who claim that anti-Semitism springs from Catholic theology are wrong. “Catholic” means we include everyone in our embrace, even those not of our faith. Catholic teaching clearly condemns anti-Semitism as contrary to the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ. If anti-Semitism festers in the heart of a Catholic, it springs not from Catholic teaching but from an ignorance of that teaching. It springs not from Scripture, but from ignorance of Scripture. It springs, I suggest, from our culture, our families, our friends who, through the centuries, have handed down their ignorance and prejudice in subtle and not so subtle ways. My dear friends in Christ, let us realize that we have inherited not just a legacy of prejudice but an inheritance of grace and power that can overcome all sin. I pray that that peace which, as Saint Paul told us, is beyond all understanding, will stand guard over your hearts and minds, in Christ Jesus. Or perhaps more appropriately: “The Lord bless you. The Lord let His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace.” God bless you

CONNIE MACK - Notable Knight Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, better known as Connie Mack, was born into a large Irish Catholic family on 12/22/1862. The third of seven children, Connie was active in the church, and his religious upbringing would shape the course of his life. Mack became the owner and manager of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. The fledgling team was inexperienced and truly awful. As a reminder of his mission, he had an image of an elephant put on the team uniform (a symbol that is still worn by the now-Oakland Athletics). Mack had a reputation for treating everyone with fairness and respect. He managed the team for an amazing 50 years and became the first manager to lead his team to three World Series wins. In 1937, Connie Mack's name was added to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1953, Philadelphia's Shibe Park was renamed Connie Mack Stadium.

The Mirror Principle: A Neurosurgeon’s Autobiography At the risk of appearing to be a self-indulgent old man, any expression of vanity is purely incidental in an effort to project a true message. This is my story. To Purchase contact Faithfullifepublisher.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble,
