What is meant by the term “local foods”?:
-signs in stores say local-local=fresher, healthier, tastes better-lower carbon footprint-helps local economy
What are some things about local foods that you believe are really important to folks?: -health outcomes -creation of jobs -organic (some misconceptions) -trusting the producer
What currently exists in the area of local foods in Pike County?:-Way Farms-Bainbridge Produce Market-Tony Van Meter-Bapst -strawberries-Debbie Shepherd- blackberries-Pastured Providence
-Owl Creek Bison
What will be our purpose?:-access-education-investigate funding sources-motivating families
What will we focus on?:-educate-promote healthy eating-connect-promote-food security-changing habits-reduce hunger
Mission?: The group liked these terms for our mission: enhance food systems, reduce hunger and health issues, change habits
Vision?
Goal?: The group liked these terms for our goal: provide educational and networking opportunities that bring people together, involve residents, work to eliminate barriers
What can we do? Identify action items that could be undertaken in the next 30 days:
-find out about how SNAP benefits work for Farmer’s Markets/help advertise this option to SNAP recipients**Julie Blanton is going to gather this info and send it to me
-additional input from other groups**it was suggested that we should involve a parent group in this conversation. Tammy is on the agenda for May 13th to speak to the Head Start Policy Council about the items from our agenda.
-list of funding sources**Hannah Scott and anyone else who may have info – can you please send
Tammy any info you have that so she can start to put together a list for the group?
-money for education resources**anyone that comes across info to share, please send it to Tammy
-involve grocery representatives**Tammy will reach out again to managers at Kroger, Wal-Mart, Ritchie’s and
Sav-A-Lot for our next meeting. Anyone that has personal connections to any of these people, feel free to discuss this with them.
-reach out to other local producers**Tammy is working on gathering contact info for the producers who
were named in the meeting notes above. If anyone has this info, please send it to me.
Who is missing today that we might want to include?-grocery representatives-more producers-non-profit organizations (churches, civic groups)
Discussion of what we will call our group:I am looking for suggestions here……
Future Meetings
1. How often and where will the meetings be held? Several people indicated that the Endeavor Center works the best.
2. What is the best time to schedule meetings for maximum participation? Results from attendees: 9 “anytime”, 2 “anytime during the day”, 1 “anytime but not 2nd Tues/Thurs., 3rd Thurs., or 4th Wed.)”, 1 “10am but not 3rd Wed. or Thurs.”, 1 “once a month on Tues. mornings just like today”, 1 “mornings”, 1 “late afternoon or evening”
3. Who will send out the meeting notices, minutes, reports? Tammy Jones
