France: paints and coatings marketstagnated in 2003

French coatings manufacturersrecorded a slight downturn of0.3% in production volume(838,000 tonnes) in 2003. Salesof water based coatingsincreased by 2.8% to 45% of themarket volume. Powder coatingsrecorded a 10% downturn in2002, which was more thancompensated for in 2003. Salesvolumes of radiation curecoatings increased by 6.7% to4800 tonnes in 2003. Frenchproduction of printing inksdecreased by 1.8% to 94,645tonnes.

New corrosion inhibitors from Halox

Halox has made available Halox710 and Halox 720 corrosioninhibitors for super-durablepowder coating purposes. Theyare free flowing, non-refractivewhite powders containing lowmoisture. Halox 710 is claimed toimpart outstanding performanceon aluminium and iron phosphatesubstrates while Halox 720provides favourable and cost-effective benefits on aluminiumand iron phosphate substrates.These products are easy to useand can be included in the pre-mix stage of powder coatingproduction.

Reichhold offers powder coatingresins

Reichhold has added FINE-CLADM-8912, M-8792 and M-8762 toits range of speciality polyestersfor powder coating purposes. M-8912 is claimed to offer goodstorage stability, superb

mechanical characteristics andoutstanding weathering endurance.This super-durable carboxylfunctional polyester is intended tocure by PT-910 crosslinkers. Thecarboxylated polyester M-8792 isengineered to be used with ß-hydroxyalkylamides tomanufacture coatings with superbexterior durability. M-8762 is apre-catalysed carboxyl functionalpolyester resin intended to curewith bisphenol-A epoxy curativesat 50/50 ratios.

Pigments and additives for optimumcoatings from Clariant

Clariant’s Pigments & AdditivesDivision exhibited its newestproducts at the Middle EastCoatings Show in Dubai, UnitedArab Emirates, 9-10 Mar 2004.New products include theHostaperm pigments withelevated hardness (available ingrades Yellow 5HG, Red VioletERX/RX-WD, Blue RSR and THIRed 4G 70). Hansa BrilliantYellow 2GX 70-S has beendeveloped for industrial andarchitectural coatings, andNovaperm F3RK 70-PCA forpowder coatings. For printingapplications there are Permanent-Rubine P-L7B01 and Hostaperm-Blue P-VFS with a solvent basefor printing on packagingNovaper- Red F6RK hasexceptional hardness. Newproducts for digital printinginclude Tonerwax S80, and TPLicocene PP6102 is the firstmetallocene wax for toners.Ceridust 6073, 6074 and 6075are new texture additives fromthe Ceridust range of micronisedproducts. Exolit flame retardantadditives are halogen free andare easy to process. They havelow smoke densities and do notrelease additional corrosivegases.

Conductive polymers developed toreplace chromates

A new group of corrosion-resistant conducting polymers hasbeen developed as a replacementfor toxic chromates in paints andother coating systems by thegroup led by Prof Sze Yang atthe University of Rhode Island.The new product is a conductingpolymer that is used as an additiveand can emulate the mostimportant functions of chromates,ie, it inhibits the process ofcorrosion electrochemically. Unlikeother efforts to develop single-strand, corrosion-resistantconducting polymers, this low-costpolymer has a second strand thatallows a variety of modificationsto its physical structure, making itmore malleable and adaptable formany application processes,including spraying, dipping or spincoating. Major potential marketsinclude coating of aluminiumalloys for aircraft, aluminium andsteel for the automotive industry,and concrete-reinforcing bars forbridges, highways and buildings.The polymers are effective as alow-cost, minor additive to paint,and can be soluble in commercialpaint solvents and used in water-based epoxies.
