DO’S AND DON’TSPeople with piercings have different experiences. some good and some not so good. However bad experiences of piercing can be avoided if we know how to take care of our piercings. Here are the Do’s and Don’ts of piercing just to help you take care of piercings. :) DO’S

KEEP CLEAN Personal Hygiene is important and you do want to avoid infection

LEAVE THE JEWELRY INAfter piercing leave the jewelry in and and leave it until you heal.

GET HELP IF YOU HAVE AN INFECTIONIf you see any sign of an infection get help as soon as possible , you do not want the infection to get worse.

GO TO A PROFESSIONALYes...some people pierce themselves or ask friends to pierce them which is just a risk and it can be dangerous. Go to someone who is qualified and licenced to do piercings who also has the correct instruments to do piercings

DON’TSAVOID USING PRODUCTS THAT ARE NOT RECOMMENDED BY PIERCERSome products may hinder the healing process or they may cause harm.

AVOID SLEEPING ON PIERCINGSDo not put any form of pressure on your piercings

STARTER JEWELRY SHOULD NOT BE CHANGEDIf your piercing is not fully healed, the starter jewelry should not be removed because the piercing can close, healing may take time and you can also cause an infection.

AVOID SCRATCHING, PICKING OR PLAYING WITH PIERCINGPiercings should not be handled roughly, played with or scratched because there are possibilities of causing damage to the skin around the piercing and possibly getting an infection.

why do people pierce??

7

is it to fit in? to stand out? or just because one chooses to? honestly there are plenty reasons why people pierce and no one reason is more credible and legit than the other. these days piercings of other parts of our bodies are becoming nearly a commonplace as the piercing of the ear with people piercing tongues navels and eyebrows..

the reasons for piercing vary from person to person. for most, it is more about the statement that says they are free and independent of restricting factors while for some it may be to try and honour culture of ancestors.whatever the reason, seeing someone with a piercing definitely gets one”s attention!!

“The pain is addictive!! the adrenaline rush is crazy and out of this world! It is actually just indescribable.”

“For me, it's more emotional. When i am hurt, sad or angry, the first thing that comes to mind is getting a new piercing. The piercing seems to make it better.”

"Is performed on the side of the scrotum where there is a crease. The piercing was carried out as a puberty ritual and it was done on the left hand side of the scrotum" (Luara 2013)

"It is named after the Prince as he allegedly had this piercing on his genitals. At that time Beau Brummel(Brand) started making extremely tight mens trousers as a result the penis needed to be held to one side. Therefore some men had their penis pierced to allow it to be held to a hook. It was called “dressing piercing” at the time" (Luara 2013)

"Piercings signified socio-political status in ancient times. From nipple to belly buttons they all signified status. For example the septum piercing symbolised the strength of the Roman gladiators and the nipple piercing were permitted only to the Pharaoh’s" (Luara 2013)

Uncommon Piercings What people say about uncommon piercings they have seen:

13

SNAKE BITES

Nthabiseng(20)‘I like piercings,I have one on my ear and I think that they are cool but I wouldn’t have any piercings on my private parts. olwethu(21)

I have three piercings and some piercings, I also have friends who have piercings in places you would never think that a person can pierce. I don’t think they are weird but unique.

Use your imagination, think of a piercing you want on your body and you can get it done. People are creative with piercings, other piercings have meaning or sentimental value to people who have piercings.

Religious beliefs about piercing Christian

"Piercing in the Christian religion is a controversial topic as many different people interpret the word of God (Bible) differently. Leviticus 19:28 - You shall not make any cuttings on your flesh for the dead or any tattoo marks, I am the Lord. Some believe this scripture does not apply anymore as they are now operating under the new covenant with Jesus Christ therefore we live by grace not the law. On the other hand there are those who believe that piercing is wrong. In 1 Corinthians 6:19 - Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you…. and 1 Corinthians 3: 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy. These two scriptures show us how God wants our bodies to remain clean and pure. In saying that piercings are not considered to be clean. I would challenge everyone to go before God in prayer and ask Him for His opinion He will not disappoint! " (Body piercings)

Islamic"In the Islamic religion piercing is permissible for Females but only on the nose and they are seen as a way to enhance their beauty. On the other hand men are COMPLETELY forbidden to pierce as it is seen as “taboo”. Allah (Their god) has cursed any man who copies a women and any women who copies a man as men and women have different roles in Islamic. (Prophet) According to the teachings of Allah our body is a trust from Allah and they are required to protect and preserve it. Consequently they are not allowed to alter with their body in any way. Ar-Rum: 30 (Verse in the quran) “There is no altering Allah’s creation”, Al-baqarah: 195 “Änd do not cast yourselves into destruction by your own hands”. Body piercing, tattooing, branding, etc. all fall in the category of unnecessary alteration and mutilation of Allah’s creation. In saying that it's clear that the Islamic religion has boundaries when it comes to piercing." (On Islam)
