TRANSCRIPT
Objective: Team Members Take Turns Drawing Representations of Scientific Terms or Concepts, While the Other Team Members Guess the Term Being Drawn
• Team = Up to Three (3) Members A Definite Rotation Order Shall Be Followed All Team Members Will Take Turns Drawing
• Time Limit = 4 minutes To Complete 25 Terms All Teams Get the Terms in the Same Order The Team May Choose to Pass – But Cannot
Return to the Term
Timing Begins
• When Order of Draw has been Established, and
• The Event Supervisor Gives the 1st Sketcher the 1st Term,
No Other Team Member Can See the Term.
Sketcher Shall Draw Pictures & Visual Clues on Paper Provided by the Event Supervisor which will be Kept For Documentation, if Need Be.
The Sketcher• May Not Speak
• May Not Give Visual Clues With Their Hands/Fingers/Feet, or Bodies
Except:For Demonstrated Event Supervisor
Clues that will be Accepted, e.g., nodding for “yes” or “no” or to acknowledge a desired response from a team mate.
• If the Term is Two (2) or More Words, the Sketcher May Write Down Any Word (Not Parts of Words) that have been Correctly Identified, But Only When the Event Supervisor Directs Them to Do So.
ILLEGAL PARTS OF A DRAWING
Any and All Numbers Such as to the Left in all Slides
Letters of Any Alphabet, (including Morse Code) Why? To Prevent Teams from Inventing Codes and Alphabets
Acceptable Symbols
• Arrows
• A Minus Sign “-” to Shorten a word
• A Plus “+” Sign to Lengthen a Word
• Remember the Exact Word (Singular or Plural) is Correct, any Other Form is Incorrect
All Other Symbols, Unless They Represent the Word(s) Given are Not Permitted
• For example, a circle for the word sun in solar eclipse is acceptable.
Sketcher May Use Underlines “_”
for the Number of Words
But Can Not Use Underlines for the Number of Letters in
the Word(s)
The Term In Play Will Be Deemed A Pass If:
The team violates any of the rules regarding the use of:
AlphabetsNumbersSymbols Verbal CommunicationsEtc.
Event Judge Will Indicate When the Correct Term is Given
Forms of the Word Will Not Be Accepted, except for plurals and singulars which will be accepted interchangeably
If the Correct Term is Given and Accepted by the Judge, then the next team member will be given a new term until the team has either:
Gone Through Their Set of Terms, orTime Expires,Whichever Comes 1st!
Scoring
• One (1) Point for Each Term Correctly Identified in the 4-Minute Allotted Time
• Team Correctly Identifying the Most Terms is Ranked in 1st Place Ties
1. Broken by the Fewest Terms Passed.
2. Shortest Time Period to Complete the Entire List
3. Team With the Longest String of Consecutive Correct Terms
4. Teams Who Identify the first Word in the List that is Incorrectly Identified by the Other Team
Science Terms Come From:
• Indexes and Glossaries of Science Dictionaries and Textbooks, and
• Will Represent a Cross-Sampling of Science Disciplines at the High School Level
• May Be Inspired By Current Events and News
TIPS FOR COACHES
Team Members should:
• Work together well and may be friends,
• Have a broad background in science,
• Be quick to think on their feet and that terms cross scientific disciplines e.g., photochemical smog – chemistry, meteorology, environment (earth & physical)
• Have a good science vocabulary,
• Be time wise and know when to pass, and
• Understand that the team’s place is determined by the # correct and then ties are broken.
HOW TO MAKE A WINNING TEAM
• TEAM MATES THAT WORK WELL TOGETHER
• SUCH AS FRIENDS, PARTNERS FROM OTHER EVENTS, CLASSES, DRAMA, TEAM SPORTS, ETC.
• FRIENDS KNOW EACH OTHER
• COMMUNICATORS
• PRACTICE AND MORE PRACTICE
• START OFF EASY AND BUILD THE VOCABULARY
• BROAD SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND AND/ORGREAT VOCABULARY
