Researches show that emotions play a large role in how we make decisions. Therefore, choosing the right image can trigger an emotional response with an action to follow.  Remember, it’s not just the images themselves that can have a conversion impact, it’s the time it takes for them to load. The longer the page takes to load, the higher the chances are for the user to abandon your website quickly. This is especially crucial for a mobile site.

To make selecting your background image as simple as possible, you need to set up a few basic considerations:

Who’s your audience?

Knowing the type of audience your website is aimed at can help you focus on certain images you know can resonate with them.

An eye-catching imageThe image is like a visual description of what you offer. It should be eye-catching, while at the same time accentuate the Call to Action.

Relevant visualsIf your business is, for example, beach resort holidays, a background image could simply be a hammock on a beautiful beach, or a couple having a cocktail on a terrace overlooking the ocean.

Consistent color schemeLike I’ve mentioned at the top, this isn’t the 1990s, and the visitor isn’t interested in a clash of colors. Try and find an image with a color arrangement that matches, or at least doesn’t clash with your website’s color scheme.

Don’t forget the textMake sure any text you place over the image is legible.  Visual CluesHaving images of real people is a bit tricky, because users will typically suspect they are stock images (which is in most cases probably true). However, a recent trend has the people in the image looking not at the user but somewhere else – conveniently in the direction of the Call to Action…Another trick you can use, although very sparingly, is arrows. Pointing in the general direction of the Call to Action can make simplify things for the user.

Where to find imagesThere are plenty of sites where you can access high-quality images; some are free and for others you need to subscribe. The advantages of a paid subscription include not having to worry about user rights, having an optimal size – which means you won’t have to crop or resize – and a wide variety of categories that can help make your search quicker and easier.Among the free image options, you’ll find Google image search, Pexels and Imcreator, and of course there’s also yourself – this way you can try and get the image you exactly want.
