Welcome to the 98th Picnic Day!! We are extremely pleased you could join us for our annual open house and hope you experience all the campus and City of Davis have to offer. Because we very much want you to have an enjoyable and safe visit to the campus, as well as the City of Davis, we would like to give you some helpful information which we hope will make your visit memorable for all the right reasons: If it’s hot outside, remember to drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated. Don’t leave anything valuable lying about unattended.Ensure you have a “check in” point identified, in case you lose family or friends during your travels. Alcohol IS NOT ALLOWED on cam-pus, no matter what your age. We have ZERO TOLERANCE for use or possession of alcohol on campus and will be vigorously enforcing use and possession laws. Off campus, you must be 21 years of age to carry or possess any amount of alcohol. No person, regardless of age, can possess any open container of alcohol on any street or sidewalk in the City of Davis. Possession of alcohol is also prohibited in many public parks and open space areas. The Davis and campus police will vigorously enforce all alcohol, party, and noise prohibition ordinances. And, on Picnic Day, many fines are doubled for illegal behavior—including alcohol violations. There are dozens and dozens of events occurring on campus throughout the day. Explore the campus and experience the richness of diversity and achievement at UC Davis and the surrounding community in the areas of research, teaching, service, and both campus and college-town life. Finally, we hope that every resident and visitor takes the Picnic Day pledge and conducts themselves responsibly during Picnic Day 2012, so that other students, faculty, staff, community members, and guests can also enjoy the day. Through safe and healthy decisions, Picnic Day will be preserved for future generations of Davis students and the community. As campus events end, feel free to dine in some of the great restaurants located all around Davis. Please, help us keep the event safe, fun, and memorable for all the right reasons.

Growing up in a rural community that was a long distance from my relatives made family reunions a very special occasion. The gathering of my brothers, sisters, aunt’s uncles and cousins became a time for celebration and reflection. My first Picnic Day was in 1986 and my initial impression was that this was an extended family reunion, albeit with 10s of 1000s of my extended Aggie Family. I have attended every Picnic Day since and have very fond memories of the parade, CAAA Pancake Breakfast, family gatherings a the fraternity house and reconnecting with old friends. Some old Picnic Day staples (the rodeo, Little International Stock Show and parading cows) have come and gone while the Battle of the bands, Doxie Races and Chemistry show continue to amaze crowds to this day. I hope that everyone of the attendees at this year’s Picnic Day will enjoy the family environment and the common bonds of the UC Davis community that brings us together. I am honored and proud to serve as one of the 2012 Picnic Day Parade Marshals and I look forward meeting many of you on April 21.

My first Picnic Day was in 1975, and I continue to meet up with alumni friends now to celebrate the day and reconnect. My fondest memory of Picnic Day was when my husband and I chose Picnic Day to tell our friends we were getting married. After playing an exciting water polo game, I casually mentioned it and everyone went crazy, even pushing clothed people in the pool with us. It was a memorable start to our Picnic Day celebrations. Picnic Day is a showcase of our incredible university and I hope that students, alumni and visitors will get the chance to experience all the academia, arts and sporting events the campus has to offer. From picnics on the grass to the parade, from chemistry magic to the Battle of the Bands, from sporting events to the latest nematode research (helping my tomatoes!), Picnic Day has something for everyone to enjoy. The breadth and diversity of events is what makes Picnic Day at UC Davis such a unique and special day. The opportunity for all to connect with friends (old and new) and family for this one special day is a truly unique experience which should be on one’s bucket list.

Welcome Aggies, Alumni, Parents, Friends and Visitors to UCDavis 98th annual Picnic Day celebration.Picnic Day is a chance for our community to show the best we have to offer. When my children were young, we would go to watch the chicks hatch in Asmundson Hall, named for my father-in-law. We would watch the dachshund races in the Rec Hall and Battle of the Bands at Putah Creek, and attend the chemistry magic show. During my time as mayor of Davis, I have participated in the milking contest on the quad during the pre-Picnic Day festivities. My grandchildren, future 4th generation Aggies, enjoy watching the parade and painting with maggots in the entomology department. What a better way to experience UCDavis than picnic day with over hundreds of activities, free for all to enjoy. And if you have time in addition to seeing what UCDavis has prepared for you, the City of Davis offers many special experiences and places to visit as well. Saturday morning Farmers Market will be in the full swing in Central Park along C Street between Third and Fifth Streets. Featured in Sunset magazine for its splendid variety of organic fruits and vegetables, handicrafts, fresh breads and pastries, it’s a great place to get a snack and pack a healthy lunch before your stroll to UCDavis. While at Farmers Market, stop by and visit the National Bicycle Hall of Fame and Bicycle Museum. Then it’s a short stroll east to Downtown, where you find different cafes, coffee shops and bistros, unique gift, book and clothing stores, and more. In the evening, try one of our many restaurants.Thank you for coming to share this special day with us, and please do come back to Davis
Ruth Asmundson
Welcome to Picnic Day 2012
Spring is in the air and it is time to celebrate another UC Davis open house, a great tradition dating all the way back to the university’s first decade of existence in 1909. We’ve come a long way since then and Picnic Day offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our great university and the collegial atmosphere everyone loves about UC Davis. Reflecting on Aggie Pride and our strong sense of community, tradition and achievement, the theme selected for this year’s festivities is “Then. Now. Always.” Growing and evolving along with our university, Picnic Day now includes more than 150 activities and is believed to be the largest student-run event in the nation. So I invite our students, families and the community to join us and partake of all the richness our campus offers. Please take time to sample the world cuisine and festival food; take in the tours, parade and educational exhibits; and so much more. Our student organizers who have again worked so hard to plan these exciting events have done a fantastic job and I know the 2012 Picnic Day will be a wonderful celebration of everything UC Davis stands for.
Enjoy, Linda P.B. KatehiChancellor

In May 2011, Tom and Meg Stallard, both former Picnic Day board members, were honored to receive the UC Davis Foundation’s Charles Soderquist Award, which is given in recognition of volunteer leadership and support of philanthropy at UC Davis. The Soderquist Award comes with a $5,000 prize, which recipients designate to the university program of their choosing. Tom and Meg chose to use the prize to establish the Friends of Picnic Day Endowment. “We have established the Friends of Picnic Day Endowment with the hope that it will help refocus the event on its original purpose – to provide a day of fun that unites campus and community and showcases the many contributions that UC Davis is making in the region, across the country, and around the world,” the Stallards said.
Throughout the past year, a number of others have made additional gifts to the Friends of the Picnic Day Endowment. Most notably, the endowment recently received a $77,000 gift from the Victor Chu Estate. Coming back to campus for Picnic Day with his family was an annual tradition that Dr. Chu, a double alumnus, loved.
If you are interested in making a gift to the Friends of the Picnic Day Endowment, please make checks payable to “UC Davis Foundation”. Please write “Friends of Picnic Day Endowment” on the check memo line and mail check to:
