Dear People of Holy Spirit Parish:

“God exalted Jesus at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance…” (Acts 5:31)

Because Jack Bennett and I will be talking about our May 19th Groundbreaking for the new Ministry Center at all the liturgies this weekend, I continue in this bulletin letter the work of clarify-ing the vision that will guide Holy Spirit parish through the changes that lie ahead. This work of understanding what we are to become as a parish is being illuminated by the Easter season scriptures that lead us to better understand the resurrected life Christ came to bring us.

Last week the focus of the scriptures was Mercy. The church at its beginning, and the church of the future, is founded upon God’s Mercy. Among the followers of Christ there is only one thing to boast about: he loves us! The Vision Statement of the Sacred Worship Committee captured this in calling us to become a parish where all are welcomed, all are supported in opening their hearts to Christ, and so all are equipped to share faith with the world.

This inner conversion naturally leads to a conversion in relationships, priorities and possessions. Basing our self worth completely on God’s mercy means we no longer need to base it on other people or things. In the language of our first reading, mak-ing this change of life in response to a change of heart is to “repent.” In today’s first reading, scripture says Jesus died and rose that “repentance” may be spread.

In light of this characteristic of the risen life, hear the Vision Statement of our par-ish Finance Council. They feel Christ calling them to: support parish committees with prayerful consideration and utilization of the generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure of-fered by the members of the parish.

I am amazed. In other parishes it has often take some strong education, and often hurt feelings, to convince the parish Finance Council that their job is NOT to de-cide how the money is spent in the parish. It is, in fact, the role of the Pastoral Council, with the help of the parish Committees, to perceive the needs of God’s people and set priorities among parish ministries for addressing them. As the Holy Spirit Finance Council articulates so well, their role is to “support” the Pastoral Council and Committees in their decision making by providing the accurate factual information prudent decisions require.

This conversation between Pastoral Council, Committees and Finance Council takes place primarily through the Budgeting process. At our May 16th Pastoral Council meeting the Finance Council will present the first draft of the parish budg-et and Committee representatives will speak on behalf of their requests. It will be the Pastoral Council’s role to prioritize those funding request. From a spiritual point of view, the budget process is a form of Repentance. It is a way of changing our relationships, priorities and possessions.

We are undertaking this week by week review of our proposed parish Vision State-ments so that on Pentecost Sunday we can give whole hearted commitment to making them come true. If you have feedback about the Finance Council Vision Statement please share your thoughts with me, or one of our Finance Council Chairs: Vern Schroth or John Clifford.

Next weekend will be another full weekend for us. At the 5:00pm Saturday liturgy we will celebrate the First Holy Communions of two of our second graders and we will bless our Freshman as the enter the period of study in preparation for the Sac-rament of Confirmation next year. We will recognize our Sophomores being con-firmed this year at Pentecost. At the 10:00am liturgy we will bless on their way graduating UWSP Seniors who have made Holy Spirit their home while at school.

Oh, what would the Spirit do with us if we surrendered completely!

DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS 2.0! The tribe has spoken! Discipleship groups ROCK. And there’s pronounced interest in not only continuing and developing discipleship groups — but also in making sure we have an immediate opportunity to invite someone — or consider our-selves if we couldn’t make it happen during Lent — to try this out. SO — days and times will be listed in next week’s bulletin — but mark your calendars for the next discipleship experience! It’s coming up soon — in a short 3 week-cycle during the following weeks to prepare us as a community seeking deeper relationship with Jesus and upcoming feasts: 19 May (Discipleship in the Holy Spirit/Pentecost) 26 May (Discipleship in the Trinity/Most Holy Trinity) 2 June (Discipleship in Communion/Corpus Christi)

Pastoral Council Election

Membership on the Pastoral Council for next year will take a new direction. We are electing 3 new members to serve on our Council of 12 members.

There will be 12 members on the Pastoral Council plus the pastor and the deacon. Each year 3 members will be elected by parishioners and one member appointed by the pastor.

A term of office will be three years, but a candidate may choose to run for a second term.

Election will take place at all masses the weekend of

May 11-12. New members will be announced the fol-

lowing weekend and begin their term in July.

My name is Paul Peterson. I am current-ly a member of the pastoral council, along with being a Eucharistic Minister. I have been on the pastoral council for not quite a year, as I began my term last spring. I am hoping to be able to return for a second term, as I am enjoying dis-cussing and being part of the vision and future of Holy Spirit Parish.

My name is JoAnn Chase and I would appreciate your vote for Parish Council.

Joining Newman University Parish in the late 1980’s I became part of Holy Spirit Parish at the time of our consolidation. Faith is an important part of my life; I was commissioned a Lay Minister in 1995 and graduated from the Diocesan School of Biblical Studies in 1999. In 2003, I com-

pleted Viterbo University’s Masters degree in Servant Leader-ship. As a Leader of Prayer, I officiate at Communion Services at one of the Assisted Living Facilities in Stevens Point. My hus-band, Richard, and I were married at Newman in 2013. We are a FOCCUS couple and have been privileged to assist nu-merous couples as they prepare for marriage.

My involvement at Holy Spirit Parish includes: Lector, Eucharis-tic Minister/Coordinator. RCIA Team Member, member of Sa-cred Worship Committee, and involvement with Campus Min-istry activities. I have been involved with Parish Council as we began our Building Upon A Firm Foundation Campaign, as Par-ish Council Chair this past year and hope to continue in that role as we break ground and proceed to completion of the project.

My name is Bob Ostrowski. My reason for running for the Pastoral Council is that I believe what I will bring to the Council is experience - in operation of parish, fundraising in the parish and com-mitment to the future of the parish. I value the past, am open to compromise and believe in the future of our parish. Our parish is a welcoming home to all for worship of the Lord.

My background: Married to Marge, father of 5 and grandfather of 7. Born and lived entire live in Stevens Point. Graduate of local Catholic Schools and Economics degree from UWSP. Member of Holy Spirit (St. Stan’s) for over 48 years. Retired manager/owner of retail paint stores.

Former positions: Parish council member and officer, usher, member of church remodel committee in 1987. Chair of rec-tory remodel team, school re-lighting and window conversion team. Part of the organizing and working group for Winter Car-nival, Fall Festival, Sunday morning breakfast, parish picnic (SpiritFEST). Co-chaired drive to start kindergarten at our school and served as Building and Grounds chair. Currently a Eucharistic Minister.

My name is Justine Brilowski. I have been a parish member since 1958. I’ve served as the Parish Council of Catholic Women (PCCW) Secretary for three separate terms and am cur-rently a Rose Leader. I am a Eucha-ristic Minister and a Communion Minister at the Atrium Care Center and for homebound parishioners. In

the past I served as the picnic Basket Raffle Chair and member of the picnic team, along with serving on the Art and Environ-ment Committee and teaching in the Faith Formation program.

Want to meet new parish families? Want to make SpiritFEST 2019 a success? We are still in need of a committee chair or co-chairs to join the team in Logis-tics. Notes and ideas are available from past chairs. This team will coordinate loaned equipment for the event. We meet once a month prior to Spirit-FEST and, again, for a fun filled day on July 28th. E-mail Brant Bergeron, [email protected] or call 347-2736 with your willingness to serve or with questions.
