Support the Mexican Electrical Workers Union (SME) In Their Struggle Against Privatization and Union-Busting! On October 10, 2009, more than 44,000 electrical workers in Central Mexico were locked out of their jobs by the gover-nment of Felipe Calderón in an attempt to privatize the Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC) public-energy cor- poration and to destroy the power- ful and militant Mexican Elec- trical Workers Union (Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas, or SME). Since that date, the Federal Preventive Police (PFP) and the Army have occupied the power plants and offices. Power failures have been commonplace in Mexico City and the surrounding region as the “replacement work- ers” do not have the skills and experience to operate the grid. In fact, many of these workers have been killed and scores have been seriously injured on the job since the government’s show of force against the SME. The Mexican people have taken to the streets in demonstrations of hundreds of thousands to protest the closing of LyFC, but their efforts have thus far not been able to force Calderón, who was im- posed by fraud in the July 2006 presidential election, to withdraw a decree that is, moreover, illegal, since only the legislature in Mexico has the authority to disband a public corporation. The SME workers have sent one of their central leaders, Humberto Montes de Oca, to the United States to organize support for his union and for the resistance movement in Mexico, whose longstanding struggles against NAFTA, privatization, union- busting and the entire corporate neoliberal agenda have been spearheaded by the SME. These are the demands that the SME has put forward and that need the support of unions and political/community organiza- tions and activists across California and the entire United States: • Repeal of the Decree abolish- ing the Luz y Fuerza del Centro Power Corp.! • Removal of the PFP and Army from all LyFC and SME installations! • Immediate opening of negoti- ations with the union to find a solution to the conflict! • Reinstatement of all fired/locked-out workers! • Recognition and implementa- tion of the union’s collective-bar- gaining agreement! • Halt to all repression against the unions! • Release of all political prison- ers in Mexico!
