    SOMETHING TO WHET YOUR APPETITE

    JUBILEE & OLYMPICS HERITAGE

    EXHIBITION. Old photographs with

    a Royal celebration and sporting

    theme to acknowledge this Jubilee

    and Olympic year will on display from

    the Houghton Heritage Society’s

    collections in the Good Grub Cafe,

    14B Newbottle Street, for the

    duration of the Festival. The Cafe will

    be offering a special Houghton

    heritage themed menu to

    compliment the exhibition.

    ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH OPEN

    DAYS. This ancient parish church

    has been at the heart of our

    community for over 1,000 years and

    will be open daily during the Festival,

    11 AM - 1 PM, Monday October 8th

    to Friday October 12th, inclusive.

    Discover the story of Bernard Gilpin,

    16th century Rector and Apostle of

    the North and meet the Houghton

    dragons. Refreshments available.

    MORNING held at Houghton

    Methodist Church, Mautland Street.

    12:30 PM – A SPECIAL OPENING

    OF THE FEAST FUN FAIR. The

    opening will be performed by the

    Right Worshipful, the Mayor of

    Sunderland, Cllr Iain Kay. Thanks to

    the generosity of the Showmen’s

    Guild of Great Britain (Northern

    Section), the fairground will be open

    to invited children for supervised free

    rides.

    6:00 PM – ONCE UPON A TIME.

    Come to the Broadway early to

    secure your place for the special

    launch of Houghton Diamond

    Jubilee Feast! Enjoy the free magical

    fun as musicians, a storyteller, several

    face painters, a balloon artist,

    Princess Emma Enchanted, and a

    strolling Magic Mick the Magician will

    be on hand to entertain the children –

    and adults! Wrap up warmly and

    bring your friends and family along to

    this extra-special Jubilee opening.

    OPENING CEREMONY &

    ILLUMINATIONS SWITCH ON will be

    performed by the Right Worshipful,

    6:55 PM –DIAMOND JUBILEE TATTOO.

    The traditional Houghton Feast Tattoo

    makes a welcome return but with a

    modern twist! Houghton Pipe Band will

    be performing with Morpeth Pipe Band,

    Ampleforth College Pipe Band, Houghton

    Youth Brass Band, Zazz Irish Dancers as

    well as contributions from the Community

    Choir, African Drummers, the Rock

    School and the Underground Project.

    This musical spectacle is not to be missed

    – and best of all, it is free!

    THE HOUGHTON FEAST OPENING

    CEREMONY & ILLUMINATIONS SWITCH

    ON will be performed by the Right

    Worshipful, the Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr

    Iain Kay in the Broadway.

    A JUBILEE BEACON will be lit on the top

    of St Michael’s Church tower to herald the

    start of Houghton’s Diamond Jubilee

    Feast.

    FIREWORK FINALE. Rockets will be

    launched from the Rectory Park, with the

    best viewing area being the Broadway.

    WHITE’S MAMMOTH GAVIOLI ORGAN,

    presented by the Show Organ Society on

    the Broadway, will play at the conclusion

    of the Opening Ceremony.

  • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM - HOUGHTON HERITAGE

    PHOTO EXHIBITION. Old photographs from the

    history of Houghton-le-Spring will be on display in

    the Broadway next to the Gavioli Organ, including

    Houghton Feast, Hillside Cemetery, Rectory Park,

    trams, public houses and more. Members of

    Houghton Heritage Society will be present offering

    searches of their genealogical records for your

    ancestors. The Society will also be taking items for

    inclusion in the Houghton Heritage Diamond Jubilee

    Time Capsule.

    9:00 AM – 12:30 PM – OLYMPIC FUN. Houghton’s

    own Paralympic hero, Hazel Robson, will be in the

    Broadway on Festival Day, Saturday, October 6th.

    Hazel, who won a Gold, two Silver and two Bronze

    medals at previous games, will appear with an

    Olympic Torch Bearer or two to talk about their

    experiences at the recent London 2012 Olympics.

    Feel free to pop over to the Union Flag tent where

    families can make their own cardcraft Miners’ Lamp

    for transporting the Olympic flame.

    FROM 9:30 AM - CRAFTS FOR KIDS. Houghton

    Methodist Church, hosting Churches Together, on

    the Broadway, will present display boards showing

    the work of the Churches plus Craft for Kids where

    youngsters will be able to try their hand at being

    creative. Free admission.

    9:30 AM – 3:00 PM – COFFEE MORNING and light

    lunches will be served throughout the day in

    Houghton Methodist Church, Mautland Street.

    10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - HOUGHTON BOXING CLUB

    OPEN DAY. Houghton & District Boxing, Health &

    Fitness Club will be opening their doors at Wheeler

    House, Newbottle Street (above Food Weighouse).

    Coaches, young boxers and Club members will be

    on hand to show visitors what the club offers for our

    area's young people.

    10:00 AM – 4:00 PM – GRAND DISPLAY OF

    MINERS’ BANNERS in the Miners’ Welfare Hall,

    Station Road. Members of the Lambton &

    Houghton Banner Group will be on site to share

    their knowledge about the history of the banners to

    ensure that this important part of our heritage is

    never forgotten.

    10:00 AM – 4:00 PM – HOUGHTON ART CLUB,

    who are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year,

    will stage a full exhibition and sale of local artists’

    work in Houghton Methodist Church. Refreshments

    available.

    10:00 AM – 3:00 PM – PRODUCE & CRAFTS

    MARKET in St Michael & All Angels Church, with a

    variety of stalls, licensed bar and refreshments.

    Bottles of Houghton’s own beers, Gilpin and

    Apostle, will be available. Free admission.

    10:30 AM – GAVIOLI SHOW ORGANS. White’s

    Mammoth Gavioli Organ, presented by the Show

    Organ Society on the Broadway, will be in operation

    at intervals throughout the day. BULL’S GAVIOLI

    STREET ORGAN will be playing in the Rectory Park

    next to the fountain.

    10:30 AM - 4:30PM – CRAFT & COLLECTORS FAIR

    in Kepier Academy, Dairy Lane, presented by

    Quintet Promotions. Free admission. For further

  • 10:30 AM – TERRATORIAL ARMY

    EXHIBITION in the Broadway. The 72

    Engineer Regiment (V), which is the only

    Territorial Army Engineer Regiment in the

    North East, will be setting up camp in

    Houghton. Pop along and find out about

    their roles and work - plus they will be

    giving advice to anyone that is interested in

    the Regular and Territorial Army plus

    guidance to Army Veterans.

    10:30 AM – HOUGHTON ART CLUB will

    stage a tabletop exhibition and sale of

    members work in Houghton Kepier Sports

    College, Dairy Lane.

    12:30 PM – PIPE BANDS. Houghton-le-

    Spring Pipe Band and others will be

    performing in the Broadway and on

    Newbottle Street between 12:30 PM and

    2:00 PM.

    1:45PM – 10TH PRIMARY SCHOOL DASH

    organised by Houghton Harriers & Athletics

    Club. Local primary schools will compete

    along the Parade route for a special trophy

    in this Olympic year. Sponsored by

    Houghton-le-Spring & District Round

    Table.

    2:00 PM – CARNIVAL PARADE organised by

    Houghton-le-Spring & District Round Table.

    Spectators - who are being encouraged to wear

    red, white and blue - can enjoy colourful

    community floats, pipes and drums, vintage

    and classic cars and buses, the King & Queen

    of Eventide, marching bands, Billy Purvis the

    clown and steam vehicles. The parade will

    travel along Newbottle Street and carry on into

    the Broadway and Dairy Lane. Please dig deep

    as proceeds of the collection en-route will be

    donated to local charities.

    4:00 PM – HOUGHTON FEAST BOWLS

    TOURNAMENT FINAL played at Houghton

    Town Bowling Club, Houghton Sports Centre.

    The winner will receive a cheque for £100 and a

    trophy. For further details please contact

    7:00 PM - 42ND STREET presented by the

    senior drama and dance students from Zazz

    with permission from Musicscope. Containing

    memorable songs such as ‘Lullaby of

    Broadway’, ‘We’re in the money’, ‘You’re getting

    to be a habit with me’ and of course ‘42nd

    Street’. It tells the story of young Peggy

    Sawyer, trying to make it big on Broadway,

    from audition to show with many ups and

    downs. Tickets available from the Zazz Theatre,

    service of thanksgiving for community life

    attended by Cllr Iain Kay, the Right

    Worshipful, the Mayor of Sunderland;

    of Houghton-le-Spring. This year’s

    preacher is The Right Reverend Justin

    Welby, Bishop of Durham. Everyone is

    welcome to attend.

    4:00 PM - ROASTING THE OX. Traditional

    ceremony, which celebrates its 45th

    anniversary this year. A roasted ox,

    prepared overnight by Houghton Rotary

    Club at the Rectory Field, will be carved by

    the Right Worshipful, the Mayor of

    Sunderland, Cllr Iain Kay. All proceeds

    from the sale of sandwiches will be donated

    to local charities.

    6:30 PM – FIREWORK CAFE (BROTH &

    BUN) will be available at Bethany Christian

    Centre, Hetton Road, with free controlled

    car parking, from 6:30 PM.

    to show their skills against young boxers

    from around the northeast in their home
