PICK & MIX

FOREWORD:

Happy New Year to you all and let’s hope 2012 is great for us all. Well, to usher in this year we are offering you an opportunity to get closer to many of the wines we import – hence ‘PICK & MIX’. What this means is we are marking down prices on all wines to enable you the opportunity of tasting a broad range of wines from our portfolio. You are invited to ‘pick’ single bottles of wine, rather than our usual 3 bottle minimum, to make up cases of either 6 or 12 bottles. Why? We just want to urge you to try some wine styles from, possibly, regions that you do not know OR wines that you might not have tasted – PICK & MIX.

As for this year we will be offering a continuing range of Growers Champagne as well as 2010 Burgundy which, unfortunately, are in short supply by up to 45% of normal production. Thankfully prices so far appear to be reasonable and slightly up on 2009 but the excellent exchange rate will ensure we will quote either similar prices to 2009 or slightly less as we always pass on the advantages of the exchange rate. There will be more wines from the Rhone valley, Loire, Alsace and even a few more Bordeaux wines that you don’t have to rob a bank to afford! Rest assured we will provide you with old names and introduce you to many new friends to excite your interest and palate.

Could I suggest you arrange a mini-tasting of a six or 12 pack of selected wines to share with friends to explore unknown regions of France?? To further entice you we will apply a 5% discount on a six pack and 10% on a dozen selection. The prices we are offering are our pre-arrival prices and not our landed prices! So there is another bonus on offer?? We simply wish you to try and taste many wines that you may have not tried before, therefore this incentive.

I promise you all that Vic and I will take to the road this year and present tasting in all states to bring our wines closer to you all. We have been a bit lax on this front for a few years for which we apologise but we hope to share a few glasses with you with various themes throughout the year.

Well, we are off and running in 2012 and trust you will join with us for a PICK & MIX with our compliments.

Finally, I wish to advise you that my daughter, Sarah, and her partner, Adam, have joined us to work and service your orders and assist us in all aspects of our business. You will meet them during our tastings and events so please share a glass with them.

Cheers,

From Bev, Sarah, Eve, Vic and Adam and oops me as well!

DOMAINE JEAN PABIOT 2010 ‘FINES CAILLOTTES’‘Fines caillottes translates to fine stones as this particular vineyard is laden with them. This imparts the mineral edge to the wine as well as the natural spice and crisp acidity of the Sauvignon grape. No oak is used in its making and the 2010 vintage was very traditional hence a continuation of the style that we have come to admire so much.’

(CODE: 3738) - $22.50 / BOTTLE

DOMAIN BART 2009 FIXIN ‘LES HERVELETS’ 1er CRU‘We have managed to get some additional stock of this stunning 2009 Burgundy. For me it was one of the best wines in our 2009 Burgundy offer and certainly the greatest quality to value wine in the range. Forget its origin in the mysterious Fixin village and enjoy it simply for its great taste of ripe Pinot Noir.’

Le Brun Servenay Avize – Cote des Blancs 9 hectares

Le Brun Servenay Brut Selection Avize Grand Cru100% Chardonnay being a blend of 50% 2008, 20% 2007, 20% 2006 and older reserve wines. This particular cuvée is always a blend of 4 vintages – and good ones at that. Fermentation is classic in tank and the malo-lactic fermentation is blocked. Rich and tight, very complex with oodles of Avize spice – coupled with subtle overtones of white fruits. There is purity and weight and the lack of malo-lactic fermentation adds a level of finesse and freshness which makes this a great aperitif or food style. This is primarily from Avize with a little Cramant (vineyard right on the Avize border) and a little Oger. This wine needs no introduction – now very popular with regular customers and many restaurants are pouring this by the glass including Rockpool. Closure is Diam cork.

(CODE: 5932) - $42.00 / BOTTLE Pre-arrival

Burghound: “(base wine 2007, 100% chardonnay). An exceptionally subtle and restrained nose grudgingly offers up ultra-pure and elegant aromas of freshly baked bread, rose petals, lavender, sliced green apple and a hint of lemon. Equally pure, intense and

beautifully well-delineated flavors are crisp, focused and quite dry without being unduly austere on the linear finish. I quite like this but it’s perhaps not the best choice for those who desire generous or very full-flavored examples as this is decidedly an understated Champagne. This could be drunk now or held for a few more years, which would be my choice. 93pts/2014+”

Tim White – The Australian Financial Review October 28-30 2011: “Crisp pear skin and flinty-smelling with a touch of complex match strike. Spring water pure fruit. Excellent weight in the mouth with subtle pear and lemon peel flavours. Long and pure, a Champagne for purists and oyster lovers. 94/100”

Le Brun Servenay NV Rosé

Rosés from the Cote des Blancs can often be a little light and just ‘simply coloured Chardonnay’, but here we have a wine with some substance and real texture. 88% Grand Cru Chardonnay (same blend as the Brut Selection) from Avize and surrounding villages with the red wine component of 12% being oak vinified pinot noir / pinot meunier. Again no malolactic fermentation and a dosage of 8g/litre. Toasty and spicy from the Avize fruit and a hint of smoke from the oak matured red wine. Strawberries and citrus in abundance! A classic and a bargain. Closure is Diam cork.

(CODE: 2166) - $43.00 / BOTTLE Pre-arrival

Burghound: “(base wine 2007, 88% chardonnay, 12% pinot noir/pinot meunier). This is one of the more “pinot-like” examples of Champagne that I have had in a while as it’s very fruity with notes of raspberry, cherry, red currant and even a hint of cranberry yet there is good complexity as well. There is an abundance of mousse but the bead is quite fine as is the precision and delivery of the almost delicate flavors that finish agreeably dry and crisp. This is really very good and I often find that very fruity examples of rosé champagne are banal

and ever-so-mildly sweet but that is definitely not the case here. Worth a look and I would suggest enjoying this now for the exuberant and exceptionally fresh fruit rather than aging it.” 91pts/now+

Tyson Stelzer – The Champagne Guide 2012. “This may be the youngest champagne you'll taste this year, but such is its perfumed freshness that there's no need to wait a moment before you dive in. A vibrant pink hue ushers in a bouquet of gorgeous strawberry and red cherry blossom fragrance. The palate is delicate, primary, linear, and predictably one-dimensional, but those red fruits linger through an ethereal finish and chalky Avize minerality. An enticing wine that showcases Le Brun's skill. “94/100

Frenchwinecentre 13 Pick and Mix February 2012

Le Brun Servenay 2002 Exhilarante VVThis has sold out at the property but we reserved a small parcel for further bottle ageing on lees. Blended from their best vineyards in the same ratio as their vineyards, 80% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot and 10% Meunier. The purity and power is quite awesome. We have the weight from the superb 2002 vintage in perfect balance with the citrus purity of the maker’s style. The blocking of the malo lactic fermentation keeps all the richness under control – we have freshness and elegance in harmony with the intensity. Citrus and spice with weight and hints of exotic fruit. From 40 to 80 year old vines! Closure is Diam cork. Demand will be high and we only have a small allocation – limited to 6 bottles per customer maximum. (CODE: 6057) - $57.00 / BOTTLE Pre-arrival

Burghound on the 2002 Exhilarante: “(80% chardonnay, 10% each pinot noir and pinot meunier). This is actually quite aromatically similar to the regular Vieilles Vignes cuvée though there is more obvious effervescence to the delicious, round and mildly toasty flavors that aren’t quite as crisp or refined. By contrast, there is a more depth to the finish and almost no austerity either. While the two cuvées are qualitatively comparable, they offer two different drinking experiences. Those who prefer a certain reserve and an understated style will prefer the “regular” and those who want a slightly toastier and more generous style will most likely prefer the Exhilarante. Note that this could be aged further but it is already drinking quite well. 92pts/now+”

LAUNOIS PERE ET FILSLe Mesnil-sur-Oger – Grand CruCote des Blancs – 30 hectares

Overall vineyard size here is quite large size with 30 ha of vineyards spread across the Cote des Blancs (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger and Cramant) and Sezanne. 22ha is bottled by the family with the remainder being sold off to the big houses. Viticulture is all certified organic – average vine age is high and picking here is always a week later than other growers as Bernard is searching for full ripeness and maturity. The vinification style is classic in flat

bottomed stainless steel tanks, leaving the wines to enrich on their lees for much longer than usual. Bernard is one of the best producers in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger – most Champagne journalists say he is the best after Salon! Demand for Launois has been high – so much so that for the previous two years, stocks of many cuvees had sold out by middle of the year. This shipment of Quartz is the most recent disgorgement and is now 'pure' Le Mesnil-sur-Oger fruit. Benoit Marguet has been looking after the export side of the business but unfortunately business and family issues has caused a rift between him and wife Severine Launois – resulting in a divorce. So for the moment we are dealing directly with Severine. And

yes finally we have a small quantity of oak matured Sezanne Chardonnay – Cuvee Dorine. Dosages of all wines are moderate at about 8g/litre.

Launois NV Cuvée Mesnil Quartz Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.Blended from 2008 and 2007 with some older reserve wines, all Grand Cru Chardonnay, now from pure Le Mesnil-sur-Oger fruit only. Previously known as ‘Cuvée Sablé’ – but the name had to be changed due to copyright issues. This has a similar overall make up to the cuvée reserve but the ‘pressure’ here has been reduced to ‘cremant’ style at 4 atmospheres – making this a little more delicate and subtle – a delightful adjunct to great seafood and as an aperitif. Unctuous and persistent with hints of chalk, citrus and white fruits. A classic and only made in small quantities. Don’t be confused by the ‘less atmospheres’ of this wine. It is as equally 'fizzy' as the standard wine but because the maturation in bottle on lees progresses at a lower pressure and lower alcohol level, different aromas and flavours develop – allowing the more steely and mineral flavour aspects to evolve – resulting in a unique flavour profile. Limited.

CODE (5746) - $50.00 / BOTTLE pre-arrival

Decanter Magazine January 2012. Broad, lactic nose, verging on tropical with mineral, lemon and toffee notes. It has a sumptuous mousse, cleansing acidity and spicy, fig and cinnamon fruit. A traditional palate that is a little indulgent. Highly recommended 4 Stars.

Launois NV Cuvée Reserve Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.

Blended from 2008 and 2007 with some older reserve wines, all Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger and a little Avize. A similar flavour profile to the quartz but a little rounder and richer with a standard pressure of 6 atmospheres. The differences between this wine and the Quartz are subtle but certainly detectable. There is more richness and white fruits on the reserve – hints of apple and chalk. Great with food or aperitif. Pin point subtle mousse. A versatile all-round style that beats 'big house Champagnes' on all fronts.

Frenchwinecentre 15 Pick and Mix February 2012

Launois NV Cuvée Dorine Blanc de Blancs.

Bernard had never made oak matured Champagne until Benoit Marguet put the idea forward. The 100% spicy Sezanne Chardonnay takes the old oak barrel maturation perfectly. Again a blend of 2008 and 2007. Not much is produced and most is only sold at cellar door to good clients. We are fortunate to have a small allocation. The creamy opulence of the oak is immediately noticeable on the nose and palate. Aromas of tropical and dried fruits, minerals lead to an intoxicating palate – bursting with citrus and chalk. Sezanne is just south of the Cote de Blancs and is very famous for its high quality Chardonnay. Stunning Champagne from a master grower!

Gaston Chiquet Dizy – Marne Valley22 hectares

The original Nicolas Chiquet planted his first vines in 1746. Since then eight generations have carried on the family tradition. Gaston Chiquet launched his own brand in 1935. They now own 22 hectares covering Dizy, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Hautvillers. The proportions cultivated are Chardonnay 40%, Pinot Meunier 40% and Pinot Noir 20%. Dizy has a 1er Cru classification with a rating of 95% and has much in common with its neighbouring village Aÿ. The wines show good weight and intensity, and they are proud to use their high quality Pinot Meunier. Having 1er Cru vineyards helps, since it basically means you have access to Pinot Meunier which cannot be grown in Grand Cru designated vineyards! Pinot Meunier is a much maligned variety.

Nicolas makes a wonderful 100% Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru from Aÿ which is a masterpiece – but sadly this is only available in small quantities. He also makes a vintage reserve Aÿ Blanc de Blancs, which is only available in magnums!! Now that’s what I call a serious and passionate vigneron! Nicolas is also a member of the ‘Club Tresors’ and produces a ‘Special Club’ cuvée. The ‘Club Tresors’ draws inspiration on three guiding principles – authenticity, rigor and originality.

Michael Edwards in the ‘Finest Wines of Champagne’ says ‘These Champagnes pre-eminently give the drinker a real sense of place, of the special plots of earth from which they come … the antithesis of a big house’s blend of many parts.’

Gaston Chiquet Brut Tradition NV.A blend of 80% 2008 and older reserve wines. 35% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 45% Pinot Meunier with a dosage of 8gm/litre. This is a delightfully round and balanced cuvée with a persistent and elegant mousse. Colour is a straw gold, aromas of brioche and apple leading to a complex and unctuous palate, no doubt enriched by the quality Pinot Meunier component. Always an approachable rounder style and perfect as an aperitif or with any seafood or white meat. A bargain. (CODE: 3417) - $42.00 / BOTTLE pre-arrival

Tyson Stelzer – The Champagne Guide 2012. “This is the real business. Pinot meunier has been selected for its character here, with aromas of brioche and a juicy white stone-fruit concentration in the mouth. There are hints of citrus purity and nuts along the way, building nicely through the finish and opening out into well-structured acidity. The freshness, length and drive of chardonnay kick in on the end, lingering with expressive, soft, chalky minerality. Even with a 40% price rise since last year in Australia, it represents great value.” 93/100
