That’s how

Picasso’s art (and life) are usually

presented


His life, his art, his women, and their mirrors


When talking the story about Picasso’s mirrors, I would also add to the typical periodization

the thread about his ‘woman’…

…and also a small pre(hi)story…

…and some (post)story, too…

It’s fairly large painting (2m x 2,5m),

currently in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona


The earliest known study for the painting;

there is ‘something’ on the wall, above the head of the sick woman.


But this ‘something’ disappears in all next sketches and studies:

To only appear again in the final work… … and in a very BIG way (the size of this ‘thing’ is almost 30 cm high irl).

I argue this may well be a ‘mirror’ - or rather a devotional object that embeds mirror.


Similar to the one we see in one of the panels of the altarpiece by Bernard van Orley, so called The Virtue of Patience (1521)


Or to the mirror-like medallion in the Birth of John the Baptist

by Juan de Flandes (1499)


Or in the Birth of the Virgin by Jan de Beer (1521)


Or many other mirror-like ‘things’ we find in a large amount

of religions works of 15-16 century… … including the most famous (and most

misunderstood) ‘mirror’ of all.
