PRESIDENT JERRY LONSBURY’S MESSAGE

For the first time since 1980 the National Music Festival was held in the same city in two successive years. Our heartfelt thanks to the Alberta Music Festival Association and their Host Committee for its dedication in hosting in Edmonton two years in a row. This year the Committee was jointly chaired by Norma Jean Atkinson and Dianne Johnstone. With the assistance of the Federation’s Executive Director, Heather Bedford-Clooney, these three ladies ensured that we all had a fabulous time. Those present appreciated that all facilities for accommodation, meals, practice rooms and performance venues were all within very short walking distances – mostly within one or two city blocks. Each year, apart from the competitors’ performances, there seems to be one event that is memorable during the week. This year it was the ‘60’s dance after the completion of all performances. What a time we all had! The DJ was fabulous. Many arrived in appropriate costume. A portable photo booth was available to preserve the memories. Most importantly, the performers danced the night away. The dances may not have been those popular in the hippie era, but they were certainly enthusiastically performed. And, the preceeding dinner and the dance were all in the festival hotel. Congratulations for a job well done and thank you from all of us.

Thank you, Edmonton!

Founder of the Federation Designation Awarded to Dianne Johnstone

At the 2016 National Music Festival, Dianne Johnstone was awarded the honour of being named as a ‘Founder of the Federation’. This is an honour given to outstanding festival leaders who have committed themselves to the Music Festival movement in Canada. By their service to the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and the National Music Festival, they have enriched the lives of countless young musicians.

Individuals worthy of this honour are recommended to Federation members by the Executive of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals, and are ratified by the delegates at the Annual General meeting. Their names are forever listed annually in the Digest.

Dianne Johnstone began her involvement in the festival movement in 1987 with the Provost Music Festival. She sat on the Alberta Music Festival Board for many years and through her involvement with Alberta she became involved with the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. It was at this time her passion grew even more for the Festival Movement in Canada and the young musicians of Canada! In 2002 she was asked to raise funds to host the National Music Festival in Lloydminster and thus began her position as Fundraiser for the National Music Festival. Over the years 2002 – 2016 she brought in over a $1,000,000. She cherished, most of all, getting to know many of the young musicians, working with donors and the friendships she built over the years.

Dianne began as Fundraiser at a time when FCMF was transitioning from corporate sponsorship and needing to find a new model of support. Her work and commitment helped shape FCMF into the organization it is today. As Dianne retires, we say a huge “Thank you!” and wish her well in the next stage of life.

Thank you, Dianne!

The 45 Celebration - Just $45 keeps music alive!” - was a special fundraising project to recognize the 45th consecutive national Music Festival. Each of these supporters donated $45 [or a multiple of $45, shown in parenthesis]. Of the $45, $15 was directed back to their provincial or local music festival, if requested, thereby strengthening the festival movement across the country.

Introducing our new Executive DirectorBarbara Long

The Federation of Canadian Music Festivals is pleased to introduce our new Executive Director, Barbara Long. Barbara has an understanding of music festivals from all perspectives - competitor, parent, teacher, local organizer, provincial administrator, donor, fund raiser, national director and host coordinator.

Barbara is an experienced arts administrator having served in different roles within the festival movement and the New Brunswick and Canadian Registered Music Teachers’ Associations. In 2009, the Canadian Music Teachers’ Association honored her with the Hugheen Ferguson Distinguished Teacher Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to music education in Canada. Barbara is a member the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association.

Barbara was born and raised in Toronto, then moved to Charlottetown for a few years before marrying and settling in New Brunswick. She and her husband live on the family farm near Hartland where she has operated a private piano studio for over 30 years. Wayne and Barbara are parents to three grown children and have seven grandchildren.

Looking Ahead to 2017 ...

2017 National Music FestivalAugust 10 - 12, 2017University of Ottawa

We are thrilled that the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals accepted the bid by the Kiwanis Music Festival - National Capital Region to co-host, along with the Ontario Music Festivals Association, the National Music Festival Competition in Ottawa in August 2017. This will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone—students, teachers, volunteers, Board members and the general public to see what music festivals can do for young performers. The very best in each discipline from each province will be represented in Ottawa in 2017, culminating in a final Grand Award Competition on August 12th, where a first prize of $5,000 and second prize of $2,500 will be awarded to the top two competitors-very exciting stuff! Join us in Ottawa during the celebration of Canada’s Sesquicentennial – literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A National movement ... The Federation of Canadian Music Festivals is a grass-roots organization that identifies, encourages and develops Canada’s young classical musicians through our ten provincial associations and our approximately 230 local festivals. All festivals are run primarily by volunteers.

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday in 2017, the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals will also be proudly celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Centennial Festival of Music, held in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1967. This festival was a significant milestone in our national festival movement and became a model for the development of the National Music Festival that we know today.

The FCMF has had a history of cultural stewardship across Canada dating back to the days of Earl Grey and Wilfrid Laurier. Thanks to a countless number of dedicated volunteers and with an existing infrastructure of approximately 250 local festivals, 10 provincial festivals and the National Music Festival, the FCMF is well positioned to continue, indeed expand, its support of amateur music performance, education and training from the grassroots to elite levels in communities nationwide. We are very proud of the fact that local communities provide the foundation for the work of the Federation.

How you can help us continue to flourish ...Your assistance in this vital work of supporting our emerging artists would be greatly appreciated!
