Compacted NBA Schedule Could Ramp Up Injuries USA Today (syndicated to multiple outlets) 12/20 With the NBA season scaled to 66 games in 124 days, keeping players healthy will be a focus for all teams. This season the packed schedule, including the sets of three games in three nights and four or five games in less than week, will be a test for all teams. There were concerns for NFL teams after the labor lockout this year, but the players had almost a full training camp and exhibition season to get ready. Even so, a study published in the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy found Achilles injuries to NFL players quadrupled in the first two weeks of camps. NBA players will have had 16-19 days of training camp and preseason. Sunday, Memphis Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur, a key backup to Zach Randolph, tore his right Achilles tendon in practice and could be lost for the season. "Extrapolate what we've seen in the NFL, and I could see in the NBA in the range of 2, 3, 4 times higher rates of injury," Timothy Hewett, PhD, Director of Research at The Ohio State University Medical Center's Sports Medicine Department, wrote in the Journal article. This coverage resulted from a multimedia release distributed boy OSU Medical Center Public Affairs and Media Relations, available online at: http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/mediaroom/releases/Pages/Did-NFL-Lockout-Provide-Lessons-to-Minimize-Injury-Risk.aspx USA Today story: http://usat.ly/rMghjH

PRESCRIPTION DRUG BENEFIT CHANGEThis message is being sent to provide you with important information that may affect your prescription drug benefit effective January 1, 2012. Within the past few months, you may have received communications about Walgreens, a retail pharmacy chain, regarding their contract status with Express Scripts (ESI), which would impact their ability to participate in ESI’s network beginning in 2012. ESI and Walgreens have been unable to successfully negotiate a new contract. Therefore, effective January 1, 2012, Walgreens will no longer be part of the ESI network.

As there are Walgreens locations in the OSU Medical Center, the university has recognized the challenge and confusion that this may cause our Health Plan Participants. Therefore, the university has successfully negotiated with the Walgreens

SALARY CAP REDUCED IN FY 12 NIH BUDGETJanuary 03, 2012The NIH budget signed on December 23, includes a reduction in the salary cap from Executive Level I ($199,700) to Executive Level II ($179,700). The actual text in Section 203, General Provisions of H.R. 2055 states "None of the funds appropriated in this title shall be used to pay the salary of an individual, through a grant or other extramural mechanism, at a rate in excess of Executive Level II." This is the first time the cap has gone down, so there are a number of questions about how it will be implemented. As soon as NIH provides some guidance, we will share it. In the meantime, for new proposal budgets please use the $179,700 cap.

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION APPLICATION FEEDecember 09, 2011Effective with the winter 2012 deadlines, all grant applicants are required to either be an American Heart Association Professional Member or to pay $100 per application submission. This fee helps to defray the administrative cost of processing applications, making more funds available for research awards. If you elect to join AHA, it would be a good idea to begin that process now so that your application is not held up.  Those choosing to pay the application fee will be asked for a credit card number as part of the application process.  You must provide either a membership number or a credit card number to be able to forward your application to OSP for submission.  For additional information see http://my.americanheart.org/professional/Research/FundingOpportunities/SupportingInformation/MembershipApplication-Fee_UCM_431672_Article.jsp
