PHYSICS INVESTIGATORY PROJECT ON

FUNCTIONING OF DIODE AND ITS V-I CHARACTERISTICS

Do  you  know  how  mul, purpose  an  ordinary  p-‐n  junc,on  diode  is?  It  is  used  for  power  rec, fica,on  (changing  AC  into  DC),  as  an  electrical  switch,  and  surge  protec,on  etc.  You  can  test  out  its  func, oning  in  forward  and  reverse-‐bias  modes,  measure  its    forward  bias  voltage  and  vary  current  through  it  to  study  V-‐I  characteris,cs.

This  project  is  divided  into  two  phases.    In  the  first  phase,  you  will  need  a  diode,  an  LED,  a  resistor  and  a  few  connec,ng  wires.  The  black  side  of  the  diode  represents  its  p-‐side  and  its  silver  stripe  is  the  n-‐side.  The  connec, ons  were  made  such  that  the  n-‐side  of  the  diode  was  connected  to  the  posi,ve  terminal  of  the  LED.  AJer  the  comple,on  of  the  circuit,  the  LED  glows.  The  voltage  was  measured  across  the  diode  using  a  mul, meter.  However,  when  the  connec, ons  of  the

diode  were  reversed  i.e.,  when  the  p-‐side  of  the  diode  is  connected  to  the  posi,ve  terminal  of  the  LED,  the  LED  stopped  glowing.    It  was  also  observed  that  a  diode  needs  a  minimum  forward  bias  voltage  of  0.6-‐0.7  V  to  allow  the  current  to  pass  through  it.

In  the  second  phase,  you  will  need  a  preset,  a  diode,  a  resistor  and  a  few  connec,ng  wires.  A  voltage  divider  circuit  was  made  using  a  preset.  Using  the  voltage  divider,  different  input  voltages  were  given  to  the  circuit.  At  each  input  voltage,  the  voltage  across  the  diode  and  the  current  passing  through  it  were  measured  using  a  mul, meter.  Five  different  voltage  and  current  readings  were  noted  and  a  graph  was  ploRed  between  V  and  I  to  study  V-‐I  characteris,cs  of  the  diode.
