Atmospheric Physics and Space Science, Environmental Physics.
A. Collaboration of Research Proposals/ideas withNational/International Universities and Institutes.
B. UGC Special Assistance Programme (SAP) for research activitiesin particle physics, nuclear physics and solid-state physics,Atmospheric Physics and Space Science through national andinternational collaborations, so that the department will become amajor research centre amongst Indian universities.
C. Submission of Projects to Department of Science andTechnology, DST Govt of India, UCOST, BARC, DAE etc.
D. Setup of new laboratories to conduct the research
1. Monitoring of Atmospheric Electrical Parameters to understandthe cloud burst ( Genesis and Prediction ) by establishing a centrefor this type of investigation.
2. Monitoring of Atmospheric Meteorological Parameters tounderstand the physics of Monsoon and Cloud formationprocesses in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.
Extension(a)
•Mentoring of M.Sc. Students in their field of interest, which includesawareness of different career options & their preparations and alsonational level engagement in summer/winter research projects forM.Sc. Students.
• To conduct different theme based seminars, participated by bothstudents and teachers, experts can be invited ( celabration ofdifferent Science related important events, like national science day, birthdays of scientists, emerging fields of physics, interdisciplinaryetc.)
• Interaction with X/XIIth level school children to encourage them toopt science stream by providing them application and information ofpossible dimension of basic sciences. This can be done by invitingschool children for departmental visit or by visiting their schools anddemonstrating there basic science practical
• Formation of Physical science group “CREATIVE CIRCLE” toundertake all above said activities.
Infrastructure
1. Basic sitting space, computer with internet connectivity to each
faculty member.
2. Time to time updates in the departmental website.
3. Net Connectivity with students so that information related to
them can be conveyed easily.
Subsidiary and Supporting Activities
•Smart Classes •Instrumentation handling training to UG/PG Students. •Student activities •Visit of Other University’s Laboratories•Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) and actively lead in IAPT and Indian Physics Association (IPA) activities.
Electronics lab: The lab is well known for its ready to use equipment. In this lab
many circuits like amplifiers, communication units, modulators, filters, can be
easily constructed and results can be analyzed by using the maximum available
equipment. Electronic lab is equipped with advanced IC’s, signal processing
units, CRO’s, analog and digital logic training kits and variable and fixed voltage
sources.
Microprocessors and Microcontrollers lab: This lab consisting of advanced
microprocessors and microcontrollers to learn all the basic as well as advanced
programming and interfacing techniques. The students are instructed with well
expertise faculty and are trained to learn the programming and interfacing
techniques in different ICs of microprocessors and microcontrollers.
Computers lab: The lab is equipped with a good number of computers for the
benefit of the students. The students are well trained in different operating
systems like Windows, Linux and also trained in programming languages and
packages like C, C++ and Data structures. The main aim of this lab is to develop
the programming skills of the students and encourage them towards
computational physics.
Materials Science lab: This lab is well known for its research in ferroelectric
materials, multiferroic materials, optical materials and magnetic materials
like ferrites. The major research equipment in this lab is 1600 °C, 1400 °C,
1200 °C and 800 °C programmable furnaces, Keithley 2001 multimeter,
balance up to 10 micro grams accuracy measurements, resistivity
measurement units and trinacular microscope to study surface structures.
Apart from these instruments, for PG students, various experimental set-
ups are also available in this lab.
Astro-physics and Astronomy centre: The upcoming centre is being
established to perform the basic experiments at UG/PG level. This will also be
one of the main centre for public out reach and science popularization
programs. M.Sc/Pre-Ph.D students may get the exposure for research in space
and atmospheric scinece. Observing the rays through the telescope and
planetorium will be prime attaraction for students and public.
Undergraduate lab: The department has a well equipped under graduate physics laboratory
which gives basic knowledge and understanding the different concepts in Physics to the
undergraduate students.
