What do you believe patients value the most in their physicians? That they truly care about them and are doing everything possible to help them.

Physician Spotlight

Each year, the Nurse’s Week Committee recognizes one nurse who stands out from the rest, someone who truly exemplifies excellence in nursing. This excellence in nursing award was established in honor and memory of Hurley’s former Vice President of Nursing, Sue Wright.

On Friday, May 12, the Sue A. Wright Excellence in Nursing Award was held in the Merliss Brown Auditorium. During the event, nurses who received certifications, along with new and advanced nursing degrees were recognized. This year, 10 nurses were nominated for the Sue Wright Award.

Kimberly Lipka, RN Assistant Nurse Manager in the NeuroTrauma Unit is this year’s winner. She’s been with the NeuroTrauma Unit for 13 years. Congratulations to Kim and to all of the nominees!

Weight Bearing Status Restriction placed on the patient, which affects how therapy can work with the patient. This is NOT a reason for treatment.

No Restrictions Patient does not have any medical condition that would restrict bearing weight through any extremity.

Partial Patient is restricted to putting only 50% of body weight through an extremity due to condition (i.e. Fracture, Joint Dysfunction)

Toe Touch Patient is restricted to only placing toes on floor while ambulating due to condition, this is typically 10% body weight through the affected extremity.

Non-Weight Bearing Restricts patients to place no weight through an extremity due to their condition (i.e. Fracture, Joint Dysfunction)

WBAT Weight Bearing as Tolerated, used most commonly after a total hip or total knee replacement

Physical and Occupational Services within the hospital are available for patients who require skilled intervention for functional mobility or activities of daily living beyond normal nursing care. When entering an order for these services you may notice that “Weight Bearing Status” has a hard stop, meaning a choice must be made before signing and releasing the order.

Confusion persists on what “Weight Bearing Status” means, and how that affects what therapy services can do with the patient. Below is an example of an order with a hard stop, as well as definition of each of choices for weight bearing status.

Main Therapy Dispatch for immediate therapy needs = 2OTPT or 26878.

OF THE PATIENTVoiceSimply loved Dr. Sam [Samantha Hauff, MD]. She is the best!

Dr. Michael Tupper demonstrated outstanding bedside manner and compassion. He took time to explain everything, listened, answered questions, and provided reassurance. He even sat down on one of the chairs in the room to take time to speak with me. As this was related to a pregnancy concern he did a bedside ultrasound, let me hear the baby’s heartbeat which was music to my ears and even provided a printed snapshot of baby. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience with an ER physician. Way to go, Dr. Tupper!

Dr. Wilkerson was very reassuring, having seen others get through very well with my type of accident. Although I didn’t want to hear how much I would hurt for the next few days, he was on point and prescribed medication that helped me sleep and reduced the pain level while I was home recovering.

Dr. Weber kept me very well informed of the results of my Cat Scan.

Dr. Ebenezer is the most amazing physician I have ever had the privilege to be treated by. He is so well spoken.  He has amazing bedside manners. He listened to all of my concerns and explained everything in ways that I could understand. Dr. Ebenezer also put me on a waiting list to do a second surgery on my spine due to a complication from a seizure I had after the after the first surgery. He came back after a full day of work and performed a surgery on my spine during the night to alleviate the excruciating pain I had in my back and leg. During an appointment in his office after surgery I was leaving the office as Dr. Ebenezer was coming in. Not only did he recognize me, but remembered my name, pronounced it correctly, and took the time out of his day to ask me how I was doing and to address some of the concerns I was having, right there in the hallway. If that isn’t an amazing physician, I don’t know what is!!!! He is AMAZING!!!

Dr. Peddireddy is the best doctor I have ever seen.

Dr. Adekola is the best doctor I have ever met! He kept me and my family well informed and made us feel very comfortable during the entire birth! I have the most confidence in him! I wish more doctors were like him and took the time to talk to their patients.

Dr. Moreno was wonderful. He is very thorough, calming and comforting. He was also very accommodating to the parents.

Dr. Wiggins is a fantastic physician and person. He saved our daughter’s life and we’re forever grateful for him.

Physician, YOU are the Patient’s Experience!

Mobile Outreach Lab Services In an effort to continue Hurley’s vision to transform health and wellness, and increase patient access to services, the outreach laboratory has expanded its phlebotomy services. Home draw services is now available to ALL patients. We recognize the hardship for parents of young children and the elderly to schedule time and transportation to draw stations and physician offices. Our mobile phlebotomy team will contact the patient and schedule a convenient time for a home draw. If the patient is mobile and prefers to go to a draw station, our team will help the patient find the most convenient facility.

Some other benefits that have not changed:• Patients in nursing and assisted living homes will be drawn early in the morning, so their

schedules are not disturbed.• Results are timely and sent to the facilities• All requests are scheduled within a week of being ordered.• This service is offered at no additional cost to the patient.

If you have any questions or are interested in our phlebotomy services, please contact our office at the following numbers.
