performance improvement plan (PIP), PHWC
embarked on rehabilitation of three pumping
stations: Eagle Island, Trans-Amadi and
Moscow.
The Moscow pumping station has been given a
major face lift with the repair / replacement of
worn out equipment..
The purpose of this exercise is to optimize
PHWC capacity to produce potable water and
also scale up production to meet up the de-
mand.
It is expected that with this completed rehabili-
tation exercise, supply of potable water will be
improved from the station.

most especially for children who are more vulnerable to water related diseases. In that respect, the Manage-
ment of Port Harcourt Water Corporation hosted students from Jesuit Memorial College on Friday the 2nd of
June 2017 for a tour of the water treatment plant in our Rumuola pumping station.
The human resource assistant Solikume o. Joel was on hand to help receive the students and their teachers.
Water treatment officer Mr Kenneth Amadi, Water production technician Mr Peaceman Aakol and the laboratory
manager Mrs Monica Nwofor showed the group how to treat water, generate water, analyse and the process of
distributing water to residential, commercial and industrial customers.
The 76 students present were mostly SS1 class. Their aim for this visit according to their science teacher Mr
Augustine Ebeh is to have a practical study of water purification as part of acquiring knowledge outside the
school environment.
Students and teachers appreciated management and staff of Port Harcourt Water Corporation for letting their
school tour around our facility that the tour was informative. It was nice to see how much they value water pu-
rification which is very important and serves to educate the next generation of water management profession-
als said Mr Augustine Ebeh.

Water is the largest natural
resource but only 3% of it is
fresh water, of which just
1/3 is accessible for use in
agriculture and cities. Ac-
cording to the 2014 Nature
Conservancy study, one in
four large cities is water
stressed.
Water shortage has become
an increasingly difficult prob-
lem to manage, more than
40% of the world's popula-
tion live in a region where the demand for water exceeds its supply. The imbalance between supply and de-
mand, along with persisting issues such as climate change, rapid population growth, and urbanization has made
water reuse a necessary method for water sustainability.
Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and activities made to sustainably manage the natural
resource fresh water, to protect the water environment, and to meet the current and future human demand.
The primary goal of water conservation efforts is ensuring availability of water for future generations where the withdrawal of freshwater from an ecosystem does not exceed its natural replacement rate.
The key activities that benefit water conservation (save water) are as follows :
Reduction of water loss: fixing leaks, turn off the tap when not using water (e.g while brushing, show-
ering)
Water quality management
Improving water management practices that reduce the use or enhance the beneficial use of water
Waste water treatment and reuse
Protecting the environment for the coming generations begins with
more effective water management today. We all need to take re-
sponsibility and check our actions to ensure we use water in a sustainable
manner .

Water is at the core of sustainable development and is
critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosys-
tems and for human survival itself. It is vital for reducing
the global burden of disease and improving the health,
welfare and productivity of populations. It is central to
the production and preservation of a host of benefits and
services for people. Water is also at the heart of adapta-
tion to climate change, serving as the crucial link be-
tween the climate system, human society and the envi-
ronment. Water can pose a serious challenge to sustain-
able development but managed efficiently and equitably,
water can play a key enabling role in strengthening the
resilience of social, economic and environmental systems
in the light of rapid and unpredictable changes.
According to a survey conducted by the Department of
Natural Sciences, Savannah State University, USA, more
than 650 million people in almost 40 countries suffer
from water scarcity. Among them particularly, 36 coun-
tries face extremely high water stress, including several
countries in the Sub-Saharan region, Middle East, Indian
deserts, etc. This contributes to the looming crisis from
African and Asian continents. .

Issue 13 e-Newsletter : June 2017
Water scarcity is very severe in fast developing countries
and has led to decreased energy production, low water
quality with respect to chemical and biological contamina-
tion
Wastage of potable water occurs in several ways espe-
cially from domestic kitchen (unnecessary running of tap
in the sink), bathroom (continuous running of tap during
tooth brush/shaving and long shower [also leaky faucet
and toilet contribute], several flushing of toilets with more
than expected water to wash, laundry (less loaded laun-
dry), home garden/lawn and car washing. In the Nigeria
for example, the water wastage and consumption rate per
home is almost 50% per person which is almost 90% of
wasted water.
Wastewater recycling helps you get the most from limited
water supplies. In addition to providing a dependable,
locally-controlled water supply, water recycling provides
tremendous environmental benefits. By providing an addi-
tional source of water, water recycling can assist in identi-
fying ways to decrease the diversion of water from sensi-
tive ecosystems, decrease wastewater discharge, and re-
duce pollution.

DO YOU KNOW? By Helen Hosea
If you use a low-flow shower head, you
can save 57 liters of water during a 10
minute bathe
It takes about 265 liters of water to fill
a bathtub, so showers are generally the
more efficient way to bathe.
Turn off your taps, a running tap
wastes over 6 liters per minute
Shorter sharp showers save water
Water fuels our economy, guarantees our national security,
and keeps us alive. It is time we pay more attention to the
looming water challenge and how we can achieve water
security.
The theme of this Newsletter; ‘Water Conservation & Sustain-
ability was chosen to draw your attention to the water crisis.
We all have a part to play in water conservation & Sustainabil-
ity if ’Water & Sanitation for all is to become a reality in Port
