Being avid fans of the beach ourselves, we did not hesitate to make a bee-line here right away as November marks the travel season, which lasts all the way to April, to enjoy the Surin Islands.

The marine national park is made up of the North Surin Island, South Surin Island, Ree Island, Khao Kwang (Deer Horn) Island and Kai (Egg) Island. As for the atmosphere, the jewel-like crystal clear blue water is absolutely mesmerizing, as is the sunset that is second to none.

And so we set off to Kuraburi Pier and hopped aboard Kuraburi Travel’s speedboat, heading straight for the Surin Islands. After an hour or so, the surreal beauty of the islands spreads in front of us.

Every direction we turned, we were embraced by Mother Nature’s splendor. There was the vast ocean water, the green tropical jungle with tall trees, the immaculate powdery beach and fresh air that was peaceful yet invigorating at the same time.

So, this trip to Ao Bon for us was not only to enjoy the impeccable oceanic atmosphere, but also a great opportunity to get close to the Mokens. The innocent laughter of the children and the tribe’s simple way of life made the atmosphere twice as refreshing.

This surname was bestowed to them by Her Majesty, the late Queen Mother, as these people always lived and breathed the sea from the very beginning of their existence.

It doesn’t matter how modernized the rest of the world has become, the Mokens are quite content to live their simple way of life close to nature while continuing their ancestors’ beliefs and traditions.

In fact, their other source of income is from selling miniatures of the Gabang boat to tourists. The women of the tribe would also get together to weave pandan leaves into all sorts of souvenir items like bangles and small storage trays.

On this particular day, we drove up around 5 pm and parked the car at the parking lot. There was plenty of time so we went for a round of shopping. We browsed through the souvenir stalls but ended up getting drinks and snacks instead.

While we were enjoying the chill-out atmosphere, more and more people started arriving. For sure, everyone was here on the same mission and that is to see the most amazing sunset on Phuket Island. Some even swore that their trip is incomplete if they didn’t get to come up here for this.

When it was time, we found a spot and watched in amazement as the huge orange sun slowly lowered itself. All the while, we could hear the sounds of camera shutters clicking in the background. Within moments, the glowing light disappeared into the dark water, leaving behind a trail of grey light in the distance.

After the sunset’s grand finale, many tourists started to leave while some lingered on. We were among those who weren’t in a hurry to depart as the lovely atmosphere was really too inviting.

In 1963, a chic property called Thavorn Hotel was built in order to accommodate guests visiting Phuket. At the time, it was considered to be one of the most modern on the island. Some 30 years later, a part of the hotel’s grand lobby was transformed into “Phuket Museum at Thavorn Hotel” after its owner felt the urge to share Phuket’s history with visitors and the younger generations.

Among some of the things on display, you will see household items used during that period, vintage photos portraying the way of life of Phuket locals such as wedding pictures and movie flyers from the Mitr-Petchara era. All together, there must have been at least 500 pieces.

Although it is only a small museum, this place is packed with quality. Visitors can take a tour by themselves as all items are clearly marked with descriptions in Thai and English. Just browse through the aisles and you will learn a whole lot more about Phuket’s history.

One night while a monk named Luangpor Kajit Kamalo was fast asleep, he dreamt of a man dressed in white who invited him to a cave he had not seen before. And that was how one of the most amazing caves in Southern Thailand was discovered over twenty years ago in Amphur Plai Praya of Krabi Province.

From that day on, the cave was named ‘Tham Prasat Narakhiring’ as the interior features a large elephant-like rock boulder (Narakhiring was the name of an elephant in Buddhist scripture). This cave also has some of the most beautiful limestone formations in the Kingdom.

Lit by some 100 light bulbs, we were able to see clearly the beautiful interiors that showcase fascinating limestone hanging from above. It really was a vision that inspires the imagination.

As the light hits the limestone’s surface, it would appear as though the entire cave was covered in sparkling diamonds. Be sure to tread carefully while inside as you don’t want to damage the limestone hanging about or injure yourselves for that matter.

Visitors won’t find any distracting writings on the walls as Luangpor Kajit adamantly forbids it. Other ‘don’ts’ while inside the cave include don’t eat or drink, don’t write on the walls, don’t climb on rocks and don’t make loud noise. These strict rules keep the cave serene and in pristine condition.

As we arrived and checked ourselves into the bungalows, my friends and I went for a stroll around the property. At the lobby, I noticed a young European couple who seemed to be so much in love. I went up to them for chitchat and found out that they are planning to have their wedding here soon and that the hotel specializes in organizing Thai and Western style weddings. I couldn’t help thinking that the next time I come back here, it might very well be for my own wedding…who knows?

Aside from enjoying gourmet food served at The Blue Elephant restaurant, visitors are able to take cooking classes with the celebrated chef Nuro Soh Manee Steppe who has made a name for herself overseas and sous chef Charles who is there to help with preparations.

อาหารสำาหรบนกเรยนใหมวนน คอ ขาวหมกไก อาหารจานโปรดทเหนสวนผสมของเครองปรงสมนไพรไทยและสมนไพรเทศนานาชนดวางสลบสสนชวนมอง แถมยงมคณสมบตทแตกตางกน แตเมอนำามาผสมรวมกนจะมกลนหอมชวนทาน

The menu for us students today was “Khao Mok Gai” or Muslim style chicken rice. This dish requires a different variety of Thai and import-ed spices that give off distinct colors and flavors.

เชฟทงสองทานสอนวธการคดเลอกสวนผสมของอาหารแตละชนด พรอมแนะนำาการการใชเนอสวนไหนในการปรงวธการทำาเพยงเรานำารากผกช กระเทยม พรกไทย ผดกบนำามนหอมเจยว ใสขง หอมแดง โขลกรวมกบผงขาวหมก เชฟนำาเครองปรงมารวมกนพรอมโขลกโชว ถงตอนนคดถงคนโบราณทชอบพดวาถาจะเลอกลกสาวบานไหนใหฟงเสยงโขลกนำาพรก โขลกดงเสยงสมำาเสมอแสดงวาใชได แรงดไมมตก

หลงจากนนนำามาผดใหเขากน เตมเนย หอมเจยว ใสไก มะเขอเทศ สำาหรบขาวนนใหนำามาใสพรอมทงใบเตยฉกปรงรสตามดวยรากผกช เปดไฟออน แลวปดฝาจนสก เปนอนเสรจ จากนนกมาทำานำาจมขาวหมก เพยงเตมนำาสมสายช เกลอ นำามะนาวพรอมทงพรก กระเทยม รากผกช ตนหอม ขง และใบสะระแหน เตรยมจานพรอมเสรฟ

ขาวหมกไกสตร Blue Elephant ฝมอนกเรยนมอใหมแคเปดฝาหมอกไดกลนหอมยวใหหว สวนเรองหนาตาไมเปนรองใคร ตกแตงใหดดมสไตลนดหนอย เสรฟพรอมนำาอาจาดทเปรยวหวานอยางลงตว สำาหรบรสชาดตองยกนวใหเลย

First, both chefs showed us how to select the proper ingredients and the best type of meat for this menu. Next, we had to stir-fry coriander roots with garlic and pepper in some oil then pound ginger and shallots with spices in mortar. In the old days, it was said that the women who could pound the mortar loudly and steadily are sure to make good wives.

After all ingredients are ready, stir-fry everything together. Add butter, fried shallots, chicken and tomatoes. For the rice, cook with banana leaves and some coriander leaves in low heat. To make the sauce, all you need is vinegar, salt, lime juice, chili, garlic, coriander roots, spring onions, ginger and mint.

The aroma of ‘Khao Mok Gai’ cooked by this lot of new students was absolutely divine. After nicely presenting everything on a plate and getting the sauce ready, it was time to have a taste. Hmm…two thumbs up!

Pairoj & SuwannaVinaikulpongOur team has a good opportunity to meet and interview a couple from Bangkok, Khun Suwanna and Khun Paroj Vinaikulpong at a chic food shop not from the beach in Phang-Nga.

Both are enjoy eating . They order many kinds of food, especially sea-food. We see the dishes of grilled lobster, stir fired crab meat with curry powder and Tom Yam Koong on their table.

While sipping some soft drink after the meal, Khun Pairoj says “this is a lovely place to come”.
