Q&A MEET HEAD COACH CHIP CASTO

Q: Coach Casto, congratulations on being named theHead Boys Lacrosse Coach at Princeton High School. Whatare some of your goals for the program?

A: I think to continue the history and culture that CoachStanton has helped to establish and perpetuate here is amajor goal of mine. Having been an assistant for 27years, I have a lot of ideas rolling around my head – soanother one of my goals is to remain basic and simple.But, the quintessential goal is to make sure we continueto produce young men that love the game of lacrosse, un-derstand the value of athletics in their own development,and take with them relationships that last a lifetime!

Q: You have assembled an amazing coaching staff foryour team. How will that have an impact on your role?

A: The PHS Lacrosse staff is one of the best in the state.With so much experience and knowledge surrounding theprogram, my role can become managerial at times – butalso that of a student and listener. We all have a tremen-dous amount of respect for each other, and we really enjoybeing with each other and talking about lacrosse and theplayers. It is a tremendous privilege to have such a staff!

Q: Prior to coaching, you had a successful career playinglacrosse at a very high level, winning a Division 3 NationalChampionship 4 times! How does that experience help youcoach today?

A: A large part of my approach to building a program isbased on my playing career. Both Montclair High Schooland Hobart College were programs that produced cham-pionships on the field and championship people off thefield. When I try to distill the ingredients, it begins topoint towards the phrase I tend to use the most in practice:"Basic and Simple"!! Both the Montclair and Hobart pro-grams, and the Princeton Lacrosse culture, all focus on akey element of success – the individual. Put the personat the center of development and the program will follow!

Q: What does coaching lacrosse mean to you?

A: The goals of teaching and coaching are closely alignedas they point towards the development of people. The factthat Coach Stanton and I teach at PHS and walk the halls,interacting with all of our players every day, is a fadingreality that we are proud of and use to develop the cultureof the program. The opportunity to be around a sport thathas had a strong influence on my development as a personis a privilege I try to acknowledge every day. And, whenyou add the opportunity to be around young people thatshare a love of lacrosse, the intention to work hard, andthe enjoyment of being on a team – coaching becomes theperfect compliment to teaching.

Q: This Spring, you handed the Head Coaching reins overto Chip Casto, essentially switching roles with your long-time Assistant Coach. Can you describe what this willmean for the PHS Lacrosse program?

A: First, I never really thought of Coach Casto as an "assistant coach." The recent success that we have hadis equally attributable to him. He has had a say in everyimportant decision we have made. If you look at the bestprograms in the state, Mountain Lakes, Ridgewood, Summit, their head coaches are more like General Managers of a franchise. They have an oversight role inthe youth programs, summer teams, recruiting and off-season. Coach Casto has the vision and motivation to takeour program to those heights. I am very excited about thedirection we are heading and am really enjoying my role.I can focus on making the little adjustments during gamesthat I couldn't always see as head coach.

Q: Over the course of your career, you must have coachedhundreds of high school student athletes. What do youhope to cultivate and develop in the young men that youwork with?

A: Sports are hard. They require a lot of time, energyand sacrifice. They aren't always fun; losing can be emo-tionally painful, there can be injuries and conflicts to dealwith. So first and foremost, I hope that our players have

an enjoyable experience while they are here and that theydo benefit from their time with us. So much in our cultureis geared towards rewarding winners, however I think thatone of the most important things that sports teach us ishow to lose. Nobody goes through life undefeated. Politicianslose elections, lawyers lose cases, doctors lose patients.When our players leave high school, we want them to havelearned to take positive risks. Embrace the challenge ofcuring the incurable, solving the intractable problem andtake on what no one else wants to touch. Dream big, pre-pare accordingly, give it your all, don't look back.

Q: In 2015, you were inducted into the New JerseyLacrosse Hall of Fame. What did that mean to you?

A: It's an understatement to say that playing and coachinglacrosse has been very satisfying to me. Being inductedgave me an opportunity to thank everyone that has con-tributed to my growth and my enjoyment of the game. Thisincludes my coaches, my family, my teammates, every-one I have coached with, the PHS players and their fami-lies. I felt tremendous gratitude for all of the support thatI have been given. Having many PHS lacrosse alumni attend in my honor was very validating and at the sametime, it felt very humbling to be mentioned in the sameconversation with so many people I look up to.

Q: In what way has your association with the sport oflacrosse influenced who you are?

A: I don't think that lacrosse has influenced me, but hashelped me stay true to myself and be who I am. Lacrosseallows me to manifest parts of my character and person-ality that I wouldn't otherwise. Away from the game I ameasy-going, calm, laid back, introspective. In lacrosse Iam anything but; I am competitive, fiery, demonstrativeand unrestrained. I am so thankful that I get this outlet.

Robert B. “Bobby” Campbell (1960-1999) attended Princeton High School from 1974 to1978 and Penn State University between 1978-1982. Bobby returned to his roots andtook on the role of Head Lacrosse Coach at Princeton High School from 1985-1989. Hewas also the Administrator of the Princeton Summer Lacrosse League from 1989-1994.After his death in April of 1999, The Bobby Campbell Lacrosse Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) public charity, was established to support and promote high school and youthlacrosse in Central New Jersey. In doing so, Bobby's passion to play, coach, and enableothers to experience the thrill of America's oldest and most exciting sport will be memo-rialized. Through the generous contributions of donors, the Foundation is committed toassist the boys and girls of central New Jersey in learning, playing, and enjoying thegame of lacrosse. HONORING OUR PAST BOBBY CAMPBELL

HONORING OUR PAST BILL CIRULLOPHS alumnus William “Bill” Cirullo died Monday, Feb. 15, 2016.

Bill Cirullo had deep roots in Princeton, tracing his lineage backsome 350 years. Bill was known well as a teacher, a coach,and the principal of Riverside Elementary School. A product ofthe Princeton school system, Mr. Cirullo attended kindergartenat the Nassau Street School and remained in Princeton schoolsall the way through Princeton High School. After earning hisbachelor’s in elementary education from the University of Tennessee – and later a master’s from Rider – he began working for the district in September 1970, first as a sixth-gradeteacher at Community Park Elementary School. In 1986, hewas named Principal of Riverside Elementary.

Bill was a longtime Football and Lacrosse Coach at PrincetonHigh School, his alma mater. He also helped start the BobbyCampbell Lacrosse Foundation, named after former Riversidestudent Bobby Campbell, to help promote and honor the sportof lacrosse in Central New Jersey.

The Princeton Lacrosse community remembers and honors thememory of Bill Cirullo. Our thoughs are with his family.
