It was a celebration of life and Stellaquo Hall was packed. Although there were tears there was also laughter, some-thing Ralph Roy would have loved. The heart-felt sentiment and joyful stories of Ralphs life brought much solaceand comfort to the room. We heard from his son Paul how stubborn he was, even fighting to keep his prostate dur-ing surgery which resulted in the surgery taking 2 hours longer than average. How he thought he was a good cookand how he didn't actually know how to coach basketball and made the kids runs drills in one direction and thenanother, how much he hated turkeys living on a turkey farm, his pockets full of mints and licorice, and how if youhold on long enough your team will make the Stanley Cup.

Ralph was not just Ralph Roy he was also a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend to so many. Andalthough we heard how he had to fight to get his wife to marry him I have not seen many loves like they have. When Ralph spoke this past Remembrance Day I could just see how much Monique and Ralph loved each other,

both such great people with big hearts.

Even though Ralph was very sick he still had his booming voice and still took time for the community. Whether itwas working for the School District, Regional District or coming to community eventsRalph was great at getting everyones attention and instant respect.

Ralph moved to Fraser Lake in 1967 and started working at Endako Mines as a truckdriver. Monique and Ralph were married in 1969. He started working for the school

district as a bus driver in 1987 and switched functions in the school district from transportation to maintenanceand then back to transportation again after what his family describes as a colourful career.

His daughter Nicole shared some of the life lessons from Ralph:Never use cruise control in the winter or the rain.If you are going to build something, build it right along with the biggestscrews you can find.

If you do build something make sure you use double the nails you will actu-ally need. The greatest team in the NHL are the Black Hawks. And of course the Rough Riders are the only team that matters. His mommy made the best tortiere, until he had mom's.Mom made the first move.Put the ice in first. He always had his computer and if it was in the computer, it was law.Turkeys are the stupidest creatures on the face of the earth.

Nicole said during her speech the next time you go over his bridge, givedad a wave. If you are not in hurry, stop and say hi, as he will bethere. Dad, we are proud of you, we miss you, we honour you, we cherishyou, and most of all, we love you.

Ralph was larger than life. When he entered a room you knew with out looking up he was there. He loved FraserLake and promoted his town everywhere he went. Everyone who knew Ralph new his depth of passion for fami-ly, friends, community and his sports teams. We can say with pride...yes Ralph lived here.

Larry K Hiatt was born in Indiana on April 23, 1943 and moved to Canada with some of his family in 1962.In 1974 he married the love of his life, Rita Norris from Burns Lake. Their marriage was blessed with two great boys, Den and Nick and laterdaughter-in-law Fawn and two wonderful grandchildren, Holy and Ben.Larry & Rita ranched on Savory Road from the day they were married raising top quarter horses and cattle and angora goats, and then Larry want-ed two young long legged chicks for his birthday one year so Rita bought him some ostriches! LOL! They spent many enjoyable hours travelling torodeos every summer as well as competing in heavy horse pulls.Larry was the kind of guy that would drop his own work to go and help a neighbour...he was a true friend and often would be seen at someonesplace because they needed advice about a horse, cow or even a pig.Rita and family wish to thank everyone for their kindness, support and sympathy.Larry did not want a funeral because he said he'd had his funeral about twenty-five years ago when we put on a "Break A Leg Party" for him aftertwo accidents in the bush logging. He said he was able to visit with all his friends and neighbours and really enjoy the party...right down to auc-tioning off one of his cowboy boots!Larry will be deeply missed by many, especially his wife Rita and family. RIP old friend.*************

Had reason to travel to Vancouver awhile back, me & my two daughters...we had a blast! We got a hotel...not a cheap one either...we were on

the 12th floor the first night...when I got up in the morning and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth etc. I picked up a g lass which was in aplastic bag...it fell out of my hand, landed in the sink, (which had a crack in it) and a huge piece fell onto the floor along with the broken glass! Istood there with my mouth hanging out and water running all over the floor...until Debbie came and shut the water off!...Well we had some ap-pointments that day so we informed them at the desk and they said they'd take care of it. When we arrived back later in the afternoon we weretold we would have the same kitchenette etc only it would be on the 22nd floor. Ah, moving up in the world!...After a great supper and a bit ofTV we hit the hay, I woke up in the night and made my way to the bathroom only to return to my bed to find a pillow about to fall on the floor, Ilifted it up and there, low and behold was a big, a BIG BUG! I squished it to find it was full of blood...MY blood no doubt! WELL! I then startedinvestigating and found several more which I captured and put in a water glass with a plastic bag on top and crawled back into bed for a rather fitfulsleep. In the morning I came out into the kitchen area and said: "Guess what I did last night? Chased bugs!" F..u..n..n..y Mother! So I broughtout my glass of bed bugs!....WOW, we gotta move hotels was heard loud and clear!...But after a bit of discussion I convinced them that if wemoved we might just get more expensive bugs! We stayed and got moved up to the 24th floor! If this keeps up we will soon have the exeuctivesuite I thought! LOL...Ah, the fun of travelling! And I'll bet you thought "bed bugs" were a thing of the past!...We read in the paper that a lot ofthe Vancouver hotels house them...(free of charge too!) never put your suitcase on a hotel bed!

    ********

If it keeps snowing we will soon be as snowed in as they are in Kitimat! A lot my trees and shrubs are lying flat on the ground, wonder if they willpop up come spring? The last heavy snowfall we had like this back in 2006 the lilacs really took a beating, some of the branches I had to trim be-cause they were broken. Walter made a "race track & arena" for our donkey's because the poor little girls couldn't hardly get out of theirhouse. They have been having a ball roaring around ever since. Cute little mites! Ah well, I guess we need the moisture!**************

Our good friend Ralph Roy passed on after a lengthly fight with cancer. I will really miss him because he was always giving me hell about some-thing! What a guy! Always good for a laugh, you'll be missed Ralph you did a lot for our region.

The temperature in southern California is in the mid 70s to low 80s. Today they are forecasting rain. Yet they warn not to plan for it... the pretty weather galssay with a smirk, Rain is in the forecast, but if you have a tee time, dont change your plans ... Because lets face it, Rain in southern California is a novelty. InSan Diego County they havent seen measurable rain in months and for the fourth straight year, the upcoming summer is being promised as another dry, hot one.Drought here is real. The golf course we play was awarded $1.6 million to kill designated roughs along many of the fairways. When the ball lands in these areas, you simply hit out. And without the carpet of grass around the ball there is little drag on your club head.

To understand the depths of the drought, the coastal cities we meandered down through have experienced forest fire ratings in Extremelevels last summer. After weaving the red Escape through that daunting Red Wood Forest with its moss-covered branches and vibrant, rich greenery on the forest floor, fire doesntseem possible.

The San Diego weather channels explain temperatures in sweater ratings. Sweater weather tomorrow evening and comfy temps, wi th clouds on the weekend.Ocean side it will drop to 60-62, and inland temps will be 50 overnight with light fog during your morning drive. With this southerly flow of air... the rain willnot be cold... expect kinder, gentler showers through the weekend.

Big news here in San Diego is the announcement that the Chargers are threatening to move. They have outgrown their stadium and after thirteen years of beingpromised a new one, they want action. The Mayor of San Diego is incensed and accuses the Chargers of not being up front about their intentions. But the Chargerorganization say the New Stadium promise has been dangled in their faces for too long, and they arent buying it. Six months ago they purchased property in Car-son a bedroom community of Los Angeles. With a wallet full of funding ( $1.7 billion) in one hand and property in the other, their dream stadium can be a reali-ty, just not in San Diego. Some football fans are in shock and vow to burn jerseys and boycott the move, while others see it as a ploy for attention and are react-ing with a wave of Bye-bye Chargers.

The OBAMACARE deadline has been extended for the umpteenth time to April 15. The extension is allowing people more time to sign-up for a country-wideform of healthcare. Unfortunately there is little trust around anything named after the President and people would rather be fined than sign-up.

At a summit addressing terrorism, President Obama said with finite clarity that ISIS is not the work of religious fanatics and extremist terrorists, but individualswith hate in their heart. By not calling them Islamic Extremists, Mayor Giuliani of New York responded with harsh criticism saying the President doesnt loveAmerica enough and is not American-like in his approach to fighting terrorism.

NBC host Brian Williams has resigned after several decades as the key journalist for the nightly news. Williams reportedly made untrue comments and misrepre-sented details about being targeted while covering the Iraq War.. According to Williams, his helicopter was not only shot at but was hit by bullets while he wasinvestigating a Black Ops undercover assignment. He has been accused of faking military war stories and was originally suspended for 6 months. On February 23rdhe resigned. Stories are now flooding in that cast doubts on the integrity of this much beloved and trusted news anchor.

There is much to be said about life here in San Diego County. Here in the San Vicente Estates the beautifully groomed grounds are a perfect backdrop to those ofus visiting from Canada. The first week we were here, they held a Canada Day Potluck in the clubhouse and fifty people took part. It was a great opportunity tomeet with many of the friends we have met over the past few years. When we pull into the golf course parking lot we play - Count the Provinces... oftentimescounting a dozen or so license plates from Canada.

Its great to meet fellow Canadians here but its also great to talk with the locals who golf or spend time here on the tenni s courts or in the pool. The mishmash oflocals and foreigners is a mute point when vacationing is concerned. And adding to the local flavour on the grounds and the golf course are a dozen wild turkeyswith a menagerie of ducks, and coots, ring-tailed doves, woodpeckers, herons, egrets and a variety of song birds. The birds on the course are so plentiful ourfoursome has bagged one Black Coot and one Wood Duck. Not sure what the penalty is to hit these birds with your golf ball, but it seems to happen with someregularity.

Weve certainly enjoyed this break away from the ice and snow, but like any vacation, it must come to an end. We should be back in early March, just in time forhockey provincials in Fraser Lake and the reality of life in a rural winter community. ~ See everyone soon.

Canada and the Queen of Hearts Submitted by Ian KlugeInAlice in Wonderland, there is a wonderful scene Canadiansand everyone else in the worldshould re-read carefully, and moreoften. Shortly after Alices trial begins, the Queen of Hearts speaks:

Queen of Hearts:Now... are you ready for your sentence?

Alice:Sentence? But there has to be a verdict first...Queen of Hearts:Sentence first! Verdict afterwards.

I have the impression that in the last few years, people have been for too willing to copy the Queen of Hearts: Sentence first! Verdictafterwards. The first case where I thought this went over the top was Rob Ford, the hapless mayor of Toronto. Now dont get mewrong: Im not defending Fords life-style or his other activities but what disturbs me is that a lot of people were willing and eager tocondemn him even before charges were laid and before there had been a trial. This is no small potatoes. The bedrock of our demo-cratic justice system is the presumption of innocence until a jury has had a chance to examine all of the evidence and render a verdict.Strangely enough, no charges were ever laid against Ford despite the so-called mountain of evidence against him. Countless peoplesimply threw out the assumption of innocence and treated the man as guilty. Even worse, the media played a huge role in whipping upa lynch-mob hysteria of Sentence first! But Ford isnt alone. Lately, theres been a steady stream of accusations of sexual assault. Some, as in Rolling Stone, have turned out to be fraudulent, others require a proper trial before we can know what the facts really are.Because sexual assault is such a horrendous crime it is easy to assume guiltwhereas the severity of the charge should make us de-mand the highest standards of proof and the most meticulous legal process. There can be no privileged, inherently believable accusersor accusations. The presumption of innocence requires that all evidence and all testimony be put through the most rigorous examina-tion. To call this re-victimizing the victim is a logical fallacy based on the assumption that a crime has actually taken place and thevictim is truly a victim, i.e. it is based on a presumption of the accuseds guilt. The whole purpose of the trial is to see ifa crime hasactually been committed and ifthe accused is guilty and ifthe victim is actually a victim. The same presumptions of guilt were plainlyin sight in the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri, where poorest residents torched their own part of town on the assumption of the policeofficers guilt. The lesson we must take away from these events is that no matter who makes accusations, no matter how horrendousthe accusations are, in a democratic justice system the accused must be presumed to be innocent until the verdict has been renderedby a court. Then, if a guilty verdict is given, we can have the sentence.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAIN by Doris RayStill Waters Run Deep- by Jennel Harder Schmidt

    Time has a current,

Like water it ebbs and flows.

    Its hand bathes a soul

    with collections of memries,

rippled hearts and pools of tears.

This past year has been a bitter-sweet time for many of us in the Fraser Lake area. So many people weve known andcared about are no longer with us. Over the years Ive collected and savored a few memories from when I knew thembefore they passed away.In 1967 George Devauld arrived at where Leon and I were living in the Cariboo, with the intention of helping us moveback to Fraser Lake. George was meticulous as we loaded his pick-up truck. The furniture was placed just so, followed by

smaller items, until the truck was packed solidI thought.George wasnt quite satisfied. Do you have anything this big, he asked, placing his hands only a few inches apart. Ifound a potato masher and he happily stuffed it into a tiny crevice.

I well remember Maria Mendess philosophic words which impacted me greatly back when I had the cancer. We havegood days, she told me. And then we have bad days.

It was on one of her good days- shortly before she died- that she had her goodbye party for everyone who knew her.

As a home support worker I used to have clients at Silver Birch Lodge, where we now live. When there were functions inthe lounge, Christine Ewan always settled in a comfortable chair by the piano. Old time tenants still refer to it asChristines chair. Ralph Roy was the caretaker at the time. Catherine Seymour, who had nick-names for everyone, was

very fond of Ralph. She called him Loud Speaker. My favorite memory of Catherine was of a time when she was waiting for Sally to drive her to a function in Fort Fraser. She wore a beautiful new dress and sweater with her hair just so. Suddenly she turned around and went back into herbedroom, returning with an inflatable doughnut cushion. For my precious ass. she explained disgustedly.

Ive repeated Catherines remark quite often over the years. She was right. Our asses are just as precious as the rest of us!

Over 160 people came to apply for EI at the support centre in the 3 days Service Canada was here. The services provided Tuesday to Fridayfrom by the Progressive Employment team include, resume help, faxing resumes, computer help, training assistance, information and educa-tional support. The job boards are being updated daily, so be sure to check in regularly. If you need computer help of any kind, Sarrah Storey isavailable every Tuesday from 10-2.

Easter Treats and DecorationsKeep Easter lilies and candy bunnies in check-chocolategoodies are toxic to cats, dogs and ferrets, and lilies can be fatal if ingested by our furryfriends. And be mindful, kitties love to nibble on colorful plastic grass, which can lead toan obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting and dehydration.

Let Your Garden Grow-With Care fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides keep ourplants and lawns healthy and green, but their ingredients aren't meant for four-leggedconsumption and can be fatal if your pet ingests them. Always store these poisonous

products in out-of-the-way places and follow label instructions carefully.

Poisonous Plants Beware, many popular springtime plantsincluding Easter lilies, rhododendron and azaleasare highly toxic to pets and can easily prove fatal if eaten.

Ah-Ah-Achoo! Like their sneezy human counterparts, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause minor sniffling andsneezing as well as life-threatening anaphylactic shock. If you suspect your pet has a spring-time allergy, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Pesky Little Critters April showers bring May flowersand an onslaught of bugs! Makesure your pet is on year-round heartworm preventive medication, as well as a flea and tickcontrol program.
