UnprecedentedOpportunities, and
Challenges
A message from the President/CEO
Dear Readers,
2007 finds Melwood entering new and exciting areas with tremendous
potential for the future.
As Host Charity for the areas first PGA Nationwide Tour golf event, we
enter a new era of presence in the community. This tournament offers an
unprecedented opportunity to place our mission and our name before the
public, and an opportunity for a major new fundraising stream.
We are adapting to our changing environment with our hallmark Can-
Do attitude. We must capitalize on our core competencies to create new
services and new opportunities. The Green Roof Project with its prom-
ise of covering barren rooftops with living plants is one of many ways to
build a new and solid future, creating jobs in horticulture at Melwood
while changing much of our region for the better.
Melwoods unprecedented opportunities are balanced with unprecedent-
ed challenges. We need our supporters more than ever in 2007 as we
work for a better and stronger Melwood of the future. One way you candemonstrate your backing of Melwoods mission is to contact us and be
my guest at a breakfast we are hosting on June 6th where you will be
asked to show your support.
I look forward to meeting many of you in the near future, at the golf tour-
nament, the breakfast or on a Tuesday when we host Getting to Know
Melwood sessions, always open to the public.
Sincerely,
-

Earl Copus: Thanks for a Good 41 Years
Melwood Goddard WorkerFinds Wedding Ring
One of the memories: Theyoung man in declining healthwho requested that when hedied, he be buried wearing hisMelwood camp T-shirt.
Earl Copus spoke eloquentlyat two ceremonies, one at theDower House Road campusand another in CharlesCounty, as Melwood staff andfriends turned out to mark theend of his historic 41-yeartenure as Melwood President/CEO. Mr Copus is nowPresident Emeritus through June, 2008.
There are lots of thoughts racing across my mindthat I want to share with you, he said. Surely the
first, and last, is to say with great pride: Together, WEDID GOOD.
Earl recounted the earliest days, when Melwoodwas training people who were widely considered tobe unemployable, for jobs that might or might not ever exist.
Where there were limited dollars, we rolled up oursleeves and self-earned significant funds. Wherethere were no buildings to shelter ourselves we dugtrenches, poured concrete, and motivated the com-
munity to join us.Pioneering was a way of life, with Melwood earningsome of the first landscaping, custodial and totalfacility contracts ever awarded to workers with dis-
abilities. Among the countries touched by EarlsMelwood: Brazil, Japan, Australia, Canada, Russia, the Bahamas, England, Ecuador and Egypt.
So many years. So much to say. Yet, words to prop-
erly express feelings that expand 41 years are difficultto find. How does one properly say thanks to somany wonderful people?
I welcome Melwood's new President/CEO JaniceFrey-Angel. I challenge each of you to keep theMelwood dream alive, for the real beauty of theorganization is that it belongs to no one, other thanyou the staff, who are the nuts and bolts, the muscleand bone, the heart and soul of the organization.
Let, me repeat: We did good. We made a difference
in the lives of people. May the future Melwood be acombination of all your dreams, dedication andTEAM efforts.
Thanks for a good 41 years.
Melwood custodial worker Owen Doswell was vacuuminga Goddard Space Flight Center office when he noticed some-thing on the floor: a one-karat marquise diamond ring.
A nine-year Melwood Goddard veteran, Owen knowseveryone in the large building, and knew the ring mightbelong to administrative analyst Sandra Bussard. He saw herin the hall and told her. She said, Oh Thank You!
I must have dropped it when I took it off to put on somelotion, said Sandra. Needless to say, its extremely valuableto me, and Im very grateful to Owen Doswell.
One thing: dont tell Mr. Bussard. He has no idea!Sandra Bussard and Owen Doswell

Nadine Murrell usedto work for Melwood,
but now, Melwoodworks for Nadine.
More than five years ofimpressing everyonearound her has resultedin an exciting new jobfor the former Melwoodcustodial worker at the
Washington Navy Yard.On April 2 Nadinebecame a Naval ReactorsDivision Mail Clerk, nolonger a Melwoodemployee, but a memberof the U.S. Governmentstaff.
Her former supervisorDelores Watkins delightsin saying, Nadine willnow have an office serviced by Melwood!
Nadine was not just agood custodial worker she drew superlativesfrom everyone she came in contact with, and thesewere some pretty smart people. The Naval Reactorsdivision has a staff of about 400, and the majorityare nuclear engineers.
Several senior executives asked if there was apossibility of hiring her in one of our entry levelpositions, said Amber Lempke, Director of CivilianPrograms at Naval Reactors. We wanted to see her
move up.Then, Naval Reactors needed a mail clerk. Since
Nadine knows everyone in the building, it was aperfect fit.
Nadine carried a huge smile on her final days withMelwood, and offered advice to her formerMelwood colleagues: I tell everyone, they can dowhat I did, just work hard.
Nadine was a success story since day one of
Melwoods Navy Yard contract. Just six months afterthe contracts 2002 start, Nadine was singled out forpraise in a letter by a Navy program director forher infectious personality, positive attitude andexcellent work ethic.
In April, Gene Hutchinson, Director ofManagement Services for Naval Reactors offered hisimpressions:
Ive known Nadine for two years, and she is fan-
tastic, a pleasure to work with, a sweet person andvery responsive to the needs of the organization.
This an achievement that belongs solely toNadine, said her caseworker, Joann Morgan. Herpositive work ethic and pleasant demeanor amongAdmirals in a Class-A building made this opportu-nity possible.
Also assisting was DORS Counselor FultonSlemons.

Melwood Snow Crews Earn High Marks
The February 14 snowstorm brought much of theWashington area to a halt, but before sunrise,Melwood workers were on the job, clearing the wayat sites around the region. Numerous complimentswere received in the days after the storm.
Here is part of the message from the MarylandAviation Authority, at BWI Airport, the only airportin the region to stay open during the storm, whereMelwood workers stayed 48 hours:
At the Naval Academy, an e-mail to Robert Tucker,Melwood's Project Manager:
Also, a message from Melwood's own U.S.
Treasury facility Project Manager downtown:
Brenda G. Patterson, Landscape Operations
Assistant Manager points out, Many of these work-
ers were not able to even be at home on Valentine's
Day. It was a lot of hard work and long hours.During the areas coldest February in decades, bit-
ter cold remained after the storm.
Our crew members showed their dedication,
said Melwood Senior Vice President for Contract
Services, Richard Gallaher. Some slept over at their
sites, and spent three days chipping away at the ice.
When the going got tough, our people showed once
again that they will rise to any occasion.
The steps andsidewalks at the
Smithsonian
National Galleryof Art were clear
by morning after along night of workby (l to r) MichaelBuchanan, JosephGause and Jorge
Zeledon. Notpresent: Kenny
Spencer, EarlJordon, TulioSigaran, JuanHernandez.
Our snow crews did an outstanding job of keepingthe airport open under difficult circumstances. Theywill continue the cleanup effort today as the stormwinds down. Our crews are quite proud, as theyshould be, of the fact that BWI remained open.
Robert,Your staff did a good job clearing and maintaining
the entrances this morning. Because of your efforts, the Academy could open on time. Thank you!
Eileen Cox, Service Contract Manager,United States Naval Academy
Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am withthe work of Anthony Newman and Fred Ard during
the snow/ice storm on 2/14. They arrived early andkept the sidewalks clear during the storm event.Under some trying circumstances I believe we had thebest looking sidewalks in the area. GSA building man-agement and Treasury both felt the same way.

The inaugural Melwood Prince Georges County
Open brings PGA Nationwide Tour Golf to the
Washington area May 21-27.
We have strong hopes that our first tournament
will more than meet the standards expected of a golf-
ing event of this caliber, said Tournament Director
Teo Sodeman. With the support of our sponsors, and
especially with the support of our hundreds of volun-
teers, this will be a tremendously successful event for
Melwood and for the entire community.
Melwood President CEO Janice Frey-Angel said, It
has been so gratifying to see how this event fuels the passions of people who
love the game of golf. I look forward to the opportunity the tournament willbring for people to meet the individuals we serve.
Mr. Sodeman adds, The heart and soul of any Tour event is the Pro-Am. Our Pro-Am
pairings party is hosted by our Platinum Sponsor, Six Flags America, who has been
extremely generous in opening up their park for the exclusive use of our Pro-Am teams
and their guests. Its a pairings party unlike any seen on the Nationwide Tour.
The tournament site is The Country Club at Woodmore in beautiful Mitchelville,
Maryland, a 2005 Golf Digest choice as one of the Mid-Atlantic's Top Ten Golf Courses.

Melwoods greenhouses are now turning out plantsthat will help to transform urban landscapes every-where by turning rooftops green.
The Green Roof Project that started in Europenearly 50 years ago is now spreading to the great bar-ren asphalt deserts that top buildings across theUnited States, including those in the Washington area.
A properly engineered green rooftop system willretain 50-70% of precipitation, said MelwoodIndustries Manager Maggie Wiles. It will lower ener-gy costs by reducing summer heat, extend the life span
of the roof membrane by protecting it from environ-mental factors and significantly add to the health andwell being of the building occupants. It's all good!
The first test of a Melwood Green Roof will be atthe USDA Whitten Building on the National Mall thisspring, with more scheduled to follow.

Melwood Goddard Award Winner:I Dont Let Anything Stop Me
When Melwoods Georgia Chung-Blake was a four-year-old
with polio in Jamaica, few there envisioned the life she
would one day build for herself in the United States.
In April, Georgia was awarded the prestigious NISH
William M.Usdane East Region Award, presented each year
to an individual with severe disabilities who has exhibited
outstanding achievement and exceptional character as an
employee in the Javits-Wagner-ODay (JWOD) Program.
She came to the U.S. with her family at the age of 17
determined to live a full life. In 1999, Ms. Chung-Blake
started as a Goddard custodian, and has seen her dreams
fulfilled. Shes now married and raising three children.
I like where I work at Goddard. I really know how to get
along with people, she said. I have a severe disability, but I
dont let anything stop me.
The award is named for the late William Usdane, former
Assistant Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services
Administration (RSA), who worked tirelessly on behalf of
people with disabilities.
