Get Ready for theMelwood Prince George s
County Open
A message from the Board Chairman
and from the President/CEO
Dear Readers,
We reach another milestone in Melwoods history this autumn, with the
finalization of our agreement with the PGA to put our name on a
Nationwide Tour golfing event only a few miles from our Upper Marlboro
campus.
The Prince Georges County government, headed by County Executive
Jack Johnson, and the State of Maryland with key support from Governor
Robert Ehrlich, also worked together to make this event possible.
The membership at the prestigious Country Club at Woodmore in
Mitchellville graciously approved use of its course and facilities for the
tournament week of May 21-27, 2007. We expect some 30,000 spectators
to visit over the four days of tournament play. There are 31 Nationwide
Tour events played across the U.S. and in Australia, New Zealand and
Panama.
The next crucial step will be support from sponsors sponsorships at
all levels are needed and from volunteers! We will need approximate-
ly 400 people to help us put this event on. If you have some time, please
consider helping!
This event will have a tremendous impact on all areas at Melwood, fromour residential homes to job training to employment opportunities to
recreation programs. Our Board members Bob Anderson and Bill Friel
spent countless hours making th is event possible.
Once again Melwood has followed the time-honored advice of Milton
Berle: If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door. The door is open.
With the continued hard work and support of our longtime friends, and
some new and caring sponsors, the Melwood Prince Georges County
Open will take its place as one of the great opportunities, and great
events, of our proud history.
Sincerely,
-

Graduates of Melwood Training ProgramCelebrate Achievement, Bright Futures
July 27 was a day for celebration as families, friends and 63 new
workers gathered in an elegant ballroom to observe their graduation
from the rigorous Melwood training program.
The 13 weeks of classroom and real-world instruction in custodial
and landscaping techniques have historically prepared Melwood
workers so well that most of the grads already have full-time jobs
with benefits before the festive ceremony takes place.
Melwood takes diamonds in the rough and turns them into jew-
els, said keynote speaker, Dr. Hattie N. Washington, Vice President
of Coppin State University in Baltimore. Always know that you can
achieve anything you want to.
The ballroom was made available to Melwood by the management
at the Greenbelt Marriott.

Barney Moran Gives Back to MelwoodBarney Moran was born in 1950 with Down syn-
drome. He had caring parents who always thought he
was capable doing much more than residing in the
homes of that time. In 1977, Barney entered
Melwood's first group home, and also learned to do
landscaping and custodial work.Barney was part of the first generation of workers
with disabilities who proved to many surprised people
that they do good, dependable work.
Barneys mother, Hazel was widowed in 1982 and
was planning to have her son join her at home in
College Park. She was surprised to
learn what an independent person her
son had become. He loved me and all
his relatives, but he felt his home was
with Melwood. He didn't want to
change.
Barney Moran lived the remainder of
his 55 years with Melwood, and passed
away in February, 2006. His funeral
expenses came from his own funds,
saved over years of working at
Melwood contract sites. His mother
sent the rest to Melwood, along with a
gift of her own, and the letter reprint-
ed here.

Upper Marlboro, MD 20772
Dear Mr. Copus,
Enclosed find a check in the amount of ten thousand dollars
in memory of Charles B. Moran, Jr., better known as Barney.
Three quarters of this amount represents money Barney earned
from his working days through Melwood.
I think Barney would want th is money to be used in some waywith the Group Home Program. Barney loved the many vaca-
tions and trips he was able to take because he was working.
Congratulations on your contract with the Naval Academy.
Barney would have loved to be working at that job site. He had
a cousin who went there and would come to visit him, and he
made many trips to Annapolis.
Words can't express how fortunate we were to live in an area
where Barney could live and have the benefits of an A number 1
organization such as Melwood. I'm sure you know how he did-n't want to move, or leave, when I felt I needed to be near fami-
ly.
My heartfelt thanks to one and all who touched and guided
Barney's life for so many years.
Gratefully,
Hazel B. Moran

Summer camp 2006 was extremely suc-
cessful for the Kamp A-Kom-Plish DayCamp program. Day Camp showed the
enthusiasm youngsters have for the first-
time camping experience, said
Recreational Services Director Heidi
Aldous-Fick. The new program offered six-
to-twelve year olds the opportunity to
spend five straight days at camp. Each day
the camp provided a shuttle service, and
parents would drop their children off each
morning at either of two pickup points, in
La Plata or Waldorf, and return to get their
youngsters in the evening. Although they
didnt stay overnight, the campers enjoyed
all of the great activities the camp has to
offer.
Day Camp was initially planned as a
three-week test program in July and
August, for up to twelve kids per week.
Some of the weeks had themes such as
Intro to Camp and Nature and
Cooking. The response was so fantasticthat the numbers more than doubled.
Some kids went twice! said Children s
Program Manager Patty Greenwell. We
needed to add two extra weeks of Day
Camp, and the total attendance was 77
children. The outlook is bright for seeing
these children again in summers to come.
They saw our overnight kids and they
wanted to stay at night as well, Patty said.

Melwood Honors Lori Grosz of NISH
Melwood paid a special tribute to a person who played
a key role in securing Melwoods biggest contract ever,
the custodial contract for the U.S. Naval Academy. NISH
East Region Senior Project Manager Lori Grosz accepted
a framed Academy commemorative painting fromMelwood Senior Vice President Richard Gallaher in
August.
Loris work over the years has been extremely valu-
able to Melwood, and made a crucial difference in the
lives of countless workers and their friends and families.
Her work in helping to secure our prestigious contract
at the Naval Academy was superb, said Mr. Gallaher.
The painting commemorates the 100th anniversary of
the Naval Academys Chapel, one of the most visible
landmarks on the grounds of the historic institution inAnnapolis.
Printed below the picture: In recognition of your outstanding contribution to the employment
of 180 Melwood staff and workers at the United States Naval Academy.
Among the 180 workers wearing the
Melwood name at the U.S. Naval Academy
is one Melvin Stiney, who has appreciative
fans along the hallways he cleans each day.
Im incredibly impressed by his profes-
sionalism said Research Policy Analyst
Debra Hughes. Melvin is reliable and
responsible, and he calls everyone by their
title mister, miss, doctor.
Marine Corps Major Henry Brown:
Melvin is the one of the most conscien-tious workers I have ever known. He is
dedicated, thorough, task-oriented and
professional.
Melvin offers one more valuable contri-
bution, says Ms. Hughes. He has an
incredible grasp of sports news. If youve
missed the sports wrapup over the week-
end ask Melvin!
