LetterFromthe Chairman oF the Board and President/Ceo
Dear Melwood Supporter:
Appreciating natures cycleconception, growth, maturity, renewalcomes rom working with plants. At Melwood,
with our roots rmly planted in horticulture, that cycle isreadily apparent.
When determined parents conceived Melwood in 1963, whocould know that seedling would grow into the tall, strongorganization it has become? Over the years, Melwood andthousands o people with disabilities grew and fourished.
In 2007, 1,907 people enriched their own lives through ourarray o services, making Melwood Marylands second largest
provider o services to people with disabilities.
Now in our th decade, Melwood enters a period otransition. We are honoring Earl Copus, Jr.s 40 years oleadership by continuing that tradition o growth.
We see opportunities to meet the changing needs o peoplewith disabilities in an accountable and transparent ashion.Melwood is unearthing new prospects or employment andnew revenue or services we provide.
Project SEARCH, a transition program or high schoolstudents with disabilities, launched in the all. Melwoodentered the green building movement with its green roo
program, and spring saw the inaugural Melwood PrinceGeorges County Open, which enhanced our visibility andincreased nancial support or our programs.
Please read this report, Growing Green, with pleasure. It is atribute to your, and our, eorts to enrich the lives o people
with disabilities.
Sincerely,

When asked about their work, greenhouseworker Lester Oden replies, Im proud o theplants I grow, while co-worker Justin Nazariosmiles and gives an enthusiastic thumbs upgesture.
In the spring, a Melwood Landscape Servicescrew installed its rst green roo at the USDA

Drive the secondary roads o Prince Georges and Charles Counties, and youll see aMelwood roads crew at work.
Ive been doing good, picking up trash, bottles, paper, said Deonte Spriggs, whohas worked on a roads crew or just under a year. I like tying up trash bags andthrowing them in the truck.
Thirty-seven people with disabilities are employed to pick up litter and debris. Each
year, they pick up more than 310,000 pounds o trash along 8,500 miles o localroads. That trash, which would otherwise pollute the environment and make localroads unsightly, is deposited in a county landll.
