  • What is Phototherapy? Phototherapy is the use of light to treat psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin disorders. In treatments, the skin is exposed to a special type of light which comes from a medical device commonly referred to as a phototherapy unit. These units range from hand-held and table-top devices for spot treatment of small areas to cabinet or “walk-in” units for patients requiring full body treatment. The medical lamps in these phototherapy units emit ultraviolet (UV) light in a wavelength that creates changes within the skin cells. The cells in most patients then begin to behave normally, which reduces or eliminates the symptoms of the skin disease.

Narrow Band UVB has become a very popular phototherapy option for many dermatologists. It doesn’t require the use of medications or drugs, is very effective and has very few side effects. However your doctor will determine which type of UV light would be most beneficial for you.

What is Treatment Like? Phototherapy is a painless treatment consisting of exposing the affected areas of skin to the light. Your physician will choose the type of UV light that is best for you and develop a treatment plan specific to your condition. A common treatment plan consists of 2-3 treatments a week over several weeks. Treatment times are typically very brief, usually lasting only minutes

Do I see my Physician for Every Treatment? While you will be under the care of your physician, a phototherapy technician or a nurse may administer your individual treatments. Your physician will want to see you periodically to monitor your progress.

Is it a Cure? Phototherapy is quite effective in treating the symptoms of psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin disorders. But, because these skin disorders are chronic, genetic diseases, flare-ups can occur periodically throughout life. How long the clearing of symptoms will last after treatment varies from patient to patient, but phototherapy treatments can resume at any time if a patient’s symptoms return.

Is it Safe? Phototherapy is a safe and desirable treatment option for many patients, especially when compared to other alternatives. A possible side effect is erythema (pinkness, like a sunburn). Exposure to ultraviolet light can increase the risk of premature aging of the skin and the risk of certain kinds of skin cancer. You should ask your dermatologist to explain these possibilities to you.

Who is Phototherapy For? Your physician will determine if phototherapy is right for you. In general, phototherapy is for patients of any age with moderate to severe cases of psoriasis, vitiligo and other skin disorders which respond favorably to light.
