Photosynthesis is a biochemical process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria harness the energy of light to produce food.

Evidence of Chemical Change

•Colour of leaves change from brown to green throughout photosynthesis. •Oxygen gas is produced.

Photosynthesis Equation

Photosynthesis is a double displacement reaction

Carbon Dioxide + Water + light energy → Glucose + Oxygen Gas

CO2 + H2O + Energy → C6H12O6 + O2

Setting and Background

Photosynthesis provides nutrients, and oxygen for its surrounding organismes.

Scientists• Jan Baptista van Helmont, in the 1600s carried out a famous

experiment. Van Helmont believed that water was the source of the extra mass and the plant's source of life.

• John Woodward, in the late 1600s, tried to design an experiment to test Van Helmont hypothesis that water was the source of the extra mass. In a series of experiments over as many as 77 days, Woodward measured the water consumed by plants.

• Joseph Priestley offered an interesting hypothesis that plants restore to the air whatever breathing animals and burning candles remove.
